Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harold N. Lee retired from Tulane University in June 1970. At first the event was too incredible for us to react. Harold N. Lee is a "character" in the best sense of the term. Surely he would never leave us. He was too much an institution for our institution to proceed without him. But he had attained the mandatory retirement age of seventy, as he himself informed us, and we could not refute the calendar. When at last we came to acknowledge the event, we - his colleagues, profession al friends, and former students - realized that we wanted to honor him in a manner more permanent than dinners and parties. So the idea of the present collection of essays dawned. Harold N. Lee taught philosophy at Tulane University for forty-five years. As professor of philosophy at Newcomb College, the undergraduate women's division of Tulane, and head of the Newcomb philosophy department, he carried a heavy burden of teaching and administration. He introduced many of the courses that are now a basic part of the curriculum, such as the courses in aesthetics and symbolic logic. Shortly after World War II he became chairman of the then newly formed university department of philosophy and played a major role in the establishment of the doctoral program in philosophy. Throughout the decades he also continued his philosophical researches, and he has published and continues to publish important articles and books at regular intervals.

Book The Mission and Message of Music

Download or read book The Mission and Message of Music written by Michal Smoira Cohn and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-08 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an English re-writing of the original Hebrew edition, published by Dvir Publishing House, in 2007, and written jointly with the late Herzl Shmueli. The book probes into the nature and quality of the beauty and meaning of music. According to the authors, these have to be found within the musical phenomena themselves and serve as the basis for the aesthetical criteria of all music. They maintain that similar to every linguistic phenomena, music is a message in sound that moves, within a certain time limit, from musician to listener. The musician on the one hand, and the listener on the other, are the two focal points between which the musical process takes place. Music is thus a covenant between the musician and the listener. One sends the musical message, the other takes it up and internalizes it; one is the initiator, the other proves the successful outcome of the artistic process. The book is intended for music connoisseurs and for all who are intersted in artistic thought, in general, and in musical thoughts in particular. Every professional concept that had to be included in the book is duly explained, so that any interested reader is able to broaden the scope of his/her outlook.

Book Esthetic Qualities and Values in Literature

Download or read book Esthetic Qualities and Values in Literature written by Dushan Bresky and published by Peter Lang Incorporated, International Academic Publishers. This book was released on 1984 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literary Practice I is the first volume of a critical trilogy. (Vols. II, Esthetic of Style, and III, Esthetics of Literary Subjects, are soon to follow.) This seminal work marks an unprecedented collaboration between critic-humanist and a bio- cybernetist, developing two independent yet complementary methods of evaluating literary art. Critic Bresky identifies textual stimuli in subject matter and style, recording both their density and fluctuating intensity within the microcontext. His graphical synthesis provides the base for a broad assessment of the macrotext. For scientific substantiation of his humanistic approach, Bresky invites biocybernetist Malik, to measure the physiological energy changes related to the critic's «sentic» perception of the text. The resulting biometric profile parallels Bresky's résumé of stimuli. Contemporary theorists will find this joint exploration by a humanist and a scientist both original and controversial. It not only challenges the long domination of bloodless academic theoretism, it uses modern techniques to reassert the traditional goals of literary practice and criticism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visionary landscape architecture and garden design at mid-century in North America is captured by the greats of the era, including Julius Shulman and Ezra Stoller in many previously unpublished photographs. The treasures of mid-century American architecture have long been celebrated. Less appreciated has been the landscape design that provides the framing for these masterworks. But more than frame, landscape architecture is an art worthy of the spotlight, particularly at mid-century, when the notion that “gardens are outdoor spaces for people to live in” was championed and brought to the fore; now gardens and landscapes are not just external attributes to the house but a continuation of it and its living spaces in a relationship of symbiosis, with its pools and terraces, its winding lawns, and its partly enclosed room-like spaces flanked by brick or stone or plantings in a range of colors and forms. Approximately seventy-five mostly residential projects are thoroughly documented and recounted. Landscape architects whose work is featured include Thomas Church, Lawrence Halprin, and Garrett Eckbo, among others. Highlights include the dramatic surrounds of Richard Neutra’s Perkins House in its Pasadena hillside setting and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Marin County Civic Center, where environment and building comingle in an extraordinary modernist vision of the future made real. This book is both a wishful gesture toward a realignment of building with nature and a must-have for anyone with a visceral appreciation for a designed environment understood as an integrated whole. Ultimately, the book underlines the fundamental importance of gardens and landscape design, intended in the widest possible sense, for the quality of living of all individuals.
