Book excerpt: Previous research has recognized the significant relationship between perceived social support and resiliency in children and adolescents without disabilities, but less is known about the perceptions of social support among youth with disabilities. Available research suggests that students with disabilities report lower levels of social support from significant sources in their home and school environments when compared to student without disabilities. Gender research in perceived social support suggests that females have reported higher levels of social support when compared to male students. Other variables that may be related to ratings of perceived social support include family composition and extracurricular group membership. The present study collected data from male and female middle and high school students from one school system in the Southeastern United States. All statistical analyses were conducted using N of 103, including 22 male students with Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD), 21 female students with SLD, 30 male students in general education, and 30 female students in general education. The majority of the sample included African American participants enrolled in middle school who were eligible for free or reduced lunch. No statistically significant findings in students' ratings perceived social support, as measured with the Child and Adolescent Social Support Scale (Malecki, Demaray, & Elliott, 2000) were identified within the multivariate analyses that compared male and female students with SLD and in general education. In the multivariate analyses exploring differences in student ratings of perceived social support across groups based on family composition and extracurricular group membership, a statistically significant main effect in extracurricular group membership was identified for the perceived social support rating of Teacher Frequency, with students who reported membership in one extracurricular group reporting higher teacher social support frequency ratings.

For students with disabilities, a paucity of research in these areas leaves the influence of and relationships between these factors less clear. The current study used data gathered from a Midwestern elementary district to examine students' perceptions of social support and academic engagement and how those variables may be related to the disability severity of students receiving special education. Additional analyses were conducted to examine potential differences between the general education and special education groups within the sample. Although no moderating effect of social support was found in the relationship between disability severity and academic engagement, other differences between boys and girls receiving special education were found. Implications for interventions with students with disabilities and future directions for research are discussed.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The present study examined the relationships among perceived social support, mental health, and achievement in early adolescents, via analysis of an archival data set consisting of 390 middle school students. Specifically of interest was how various sources of social support (i.e., parent, classmate, and teacher) independently and uniquely predicted pathology (i.e., internalizing and externalizing symptoms) and wellness (i.e., life satisfaction) in youth. This study also examined the role of gender in the relationship between social support and mental health outcomes in order to delineate the specific types of support most salient to boys versus girls. Finally, this study explored the protective nature of high student academic achievement in the relationship between social support and mental health in order to determine if academic achievement moderated the relationship between social support and mental health. Results indicated that social support from all sources was inversely associated with both internalizing and externalizing problems, and associated in a positive manner with life satisfaction and achievement. Social support was a significant predictor of all mental health outcomes, with social support and life satisfaction evidencing the strongest relationship. The strength and magnitude of the associations between perceived support from various sources and student mental health were consistent across gender groups, evidencing no moderating effect. Academic achievement moderated the direction and strength of the relationships between externalizing behavior and (a) classmate support, and (b) parent support, respectively. Implications for school psychologists and directions for future research are discussed.
