Book Perceived Parental Neglect and Its Relation to Behavioral and Emotional Problems in Adolescence

Download or read book Perceived Parental Neglect and Its Relation to Behavioral and Emotional Problems in Adolescence written by Carolina Grullon and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The parental bond and its emotional and behavioral effects on children have been widely studied and researched for years. However, the association between a parent’s behavior and a child’s perception of parental rejection, which can lead to an increased risk for psychological maladjustment, is an area of controversy that has received far less attention. While experts agree that the parental bond is necessary for a child’s psychological adjustment, they disagree on the varying effects it can have on an adolescent. In this review, we examine clinical presentations of adolescents’ behavioral and emotional functioning in relation to perceived parental rejection. This literature review aimed to present a comprehensive view of how adolescents are affected by parents’ socioeconomic status (SES), and how parental absence affects a child’s psychological functioning. Proquest psychology journals, EBSCOHOST, PsychINFO, PsychARTICLES and PsychBOOKS were used to search studies that contained key words: socioeconomic status AND behavioral problems; OR socioeconomic status AND emotional problems OR socioeconomic status AND psychological maladjustments; parents working multiple jobs AND socioeconomic status OR parental supervision AND socioeconomic status; adolescence AND parental neglect OR adolescence and parental absence OR adolescence AND perceived parental neglect; neglect AND emotional problems OR neglect AND behavioral problems; effects of socioeconomic status on adolescence; comparisons of low socioeconomic status AND high socioeconomic status; and problems among low socioeconomic status families AND effects on adolescence. Nine studies examined how adolescents’ perceived rejection was affected by their parents’ socioeconomic status and how working nonstandard hours influenced psychological maladjustments. The findings showed that child perceived rejection was increased in lower socioeconomic status compared to higher socioeconomic status mothers. There was also a positive relationship between perceived rejection, depression and aggression. Additionally, mothers who worked nonstandard hours had an increase in negative mother-child interactions and children’s emotional and behavioral problems were also augmented. In conclusion, perceived parental rejection can have negative outcomes on children whose parents work nonstandard hours. Helping children who perceive parental neglect is important in order to help decrease emotional and behavioral problems. It is important to help educate mothers and adolescents on possible interventions and resources in order to help strengthen communication and reduce perceived parental rejection.

Book Negotiating Parent Adolescent Conflict

Download or read book Negotiating Parent Adolescent Conflict written by Arthur L. Robin and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 2002-12-18 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parent-adolescent discord is often handled from a unitary perspective, whether the focus is on enhancing parenting skills, resolving conflicts in family relationships, or working to improve the behavior of the individual child. This important work shows the clinician how to incorporate all of these crucial elements into a single, research-based treatment program. Presented is the authors' influential integration of cognitive-behavioral constructs and family systems theory, grounded in consideration of adolescent developmental concerns. The book describes effective ways to conceptualize and assess the problems of embattled parents and teens; use assessment data in treatment planning; overcome resistance and other therapeutic hurdles; and implement carefully sequenced skills training, cognitive restructuring, and functional/structural interventions. The theoretical and empirical bases of the treatment approach are also discussed in depth.

Book Risky Families and Adolescence

Download or read book Risky Families and Adolescence written by Borislav Ðukanovic and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this pioneering study, carried out on the samples of 3828 high school students in two countries of the Western Balkans, the authors describe the most prominent characteristics of at-risk families, based on the statements of adolescent subjects. The authors single out two most important types of the families: those which predominantly use various forms of aggression in order to gain power, dominance and control over the opponent, and those dominated by a lack of emotion, alienation, apathy, stigmatization and rejection of a rival individual or group. It turns out that the emotional consequences of neglect and abuse in the latter type of family are the most numerous and severe. Significant space is here given to the analysis of physical and mental health, behavioral problems of adolescents coming from at-risk families, the frequency and intensity of conflicts between parents and adolescents, methods used in resolving conflicts and success rates of different parenting styles in reducing the frequency and intensity of conflicts.

Book New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research

Download or read book New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, child protective services receive reports of child abuse and neglect involving six million children, and many more go unreported. The long-term human and fiscal consequences of child abuse and neglect are not relegated to the victims themselves-they also impact their families, future relationships, and society. In 1993, the National Research Council (NRC) issued the report, Under-standing Child Abuse and Neglect, which provided an overview of the research on child abuse and neglect. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research updates the 1993 report and provides new recommendations to respond to this public health challenge. According to this report, while there has been great progress in child abuse and neglect research, a coordinated, national research infrastructure with high-level federal support needs to be established and implemented immediately. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research recommends an actionable framework to guide and support future child abuse and neglect research. This report calls for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to child abuse and neglect research that examines factors related to both children and adults across physical, mental, and behavioral health domains-including those in child welfare, economic support, criminal justice, education, and health care systems-and assesses the needs of a variety of subpopulations. It should also clarify the causal pathways related to child abuse and neglect and, more importantly, assess efforts to interrupt these pathways. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research identifies four areas to look to in developing a coordinated research enterprise: a national strategic plan, a national surveillance system, a new generation of researchers, and changes in the federal and state programmatic and policy response.

Book Psychology Law and the Wellbeing of Children

Download or read book Psychology Law and the Wellbeing of Children written by Monica K. Miller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2013-12-16 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lawmakers and judges often enact and enforce laws and policies that impact youth. The extent to which these legal actions are sensitive to juveniles' perspectives and experiences has changed recently. Compared to an earlier time when juvenlies were treated the same as adults, many policies are now created with the needs of juveniles in mind, thanks in part to psychological studies that have revealed that the decision making, behavior, and cognitions of children vary drastically from those of adults. Unique in its angle and in the breadth of social issues it covers, Psychology, Law, and the Wellbeing of Children brings together new research and analyses to address how legal actions affect children's wellbeing. It addresses how civil and criminal law has evolved to protect, and sometimes inadvertently neglect or harm, the wellbeing and development of children. Each chapter describes a law or policy affecting children, identifies the relevant psychological issues, reviews the research that has been conducted or should be conducted, and provides recommendations for professionals in law and/or psychology. With contributions from top researchers and practitioners in the field, chapters discuss many current debates, including issues such as gender-specific programming for juvenile delinquents, interrogations of juveniles, changes in divorce and custody procedures, programs for imprisoned mothers, and legal actions adopted to protect the health of children and society (e.g., HPV vaccinations, considering child obesity to be abuse). This book will be a vital resource for those interested in protecting the wellbeing of children, including academics and researchers in psychology, criminology, and sociology; practitioners such as judges, attorneys, forensic psychologists, psychiatrists, and social workers; and graduate and law students.

Download or read book Parenting Matters written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-11-21 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decades of research have demonstrated that the parent-child dyad and the environment of the familyâ€"which includes all primary caregiversâ€"are at the foundation of children's well- being and healthy development. From birth, children are learning and rely on parents and the other caregivers in their lives to protect and care for them. The impact of parents may never be greater than during the earliest years of life, when a child's brain is rapidly developing and when nearly all of her or his experiences are created and shaped by parents and the family environment. Parents help children build and refine their knowledge and skills, charting a trajectory for their health and well-being during childhood and beyond. The experience of parenting also impacts parents themselves. For instance, parenting can enrich and give focus to parents' lives; generate stress or calm; and create any number of emotions, including feelings of happiness, sadness, fulfillment, and anger. Parenting of young children today takes place in the context of significant ongoing developments. These include: a rapidly growing body of science on early childhood, increases in funding for programs and services for families, changing demographics of the U.S. population, and greater diversity of family structure. Additionally, parenting is increasingly being shaped by technology and increased access to information about parenting. Parenting Matters identifies parenting knowledge, attitudes, and practices associated with positive developmental outcomes in children ages 0-8; universal/preventive and targeted strategies used in a variety of settings that have been effective with parents of young children and that support the identified knowledge, attitudes, and practices; and barriers to and facilitators for parents' use of practices that lead to healthy child outcomes as well as their participation in effective programs and services. This report makes recommendations directed at an array of stakeholders, for promoting the wide-scale adoption of effective programs and services for parents and on areas that warrant further research to inform policy and practice. It is meant to serve as a roadmap for the future of parenting policy, research, and practice in the United States.

Book Adolescent Risk Behavior and Self Regulation

Download or read book Adolescent Risk Behavior and Self Regulation written by Franz Resch and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-12 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the idea that increasing juvenile risk behaviours – like substance abuse, nonsuicidal self-injury, and antisocial or suicidal behaviour – allow adolescents to fulfill developmental tasks like identity-formation and regulation of self-worth. Narcissistic self-exploitation, mobility tasks, flexibility and the challenges of new media exert social pressure on parental figures, distracting and putting strain on their mental resources, which in turn changes and even destroys the emotional dialogue with their offspring. If children themselves experience neglect and lack of emotional bonding - resulting in a lack of self-regulating capacities – risk behaviours are the consequence. The book combines different views in the psychological, social and metatheoretical domains. It consists of three parts: developmental problems of young people, diagnosis of risk behaviours in the nosological framework, and presentation of new morbidity with an increase in symptom prevalence. The book also discusses the threat of the acceleration of social processes and the risks of postmodern society.

Book Adolescent Problem Behavior

Download or read book Adolescent Problem Behavior written by and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between negative parent-adolescent relationships and problem behavior, such as substance use and delinquency, has been validated through research in several ways, often citing increased peer influence and perceptions about peers’ involvement in problem behavior as potential contributing factors. The current study examined perceived peer conduct and resistance to peer influence as moderators in the relationship between parent-adolescent relationship quality and delinquency. Twenty-nine participants were referred by school administrators as part of a substance use intervention program. Participants were given questionnaires to measure parent-adolescent relationship quality, delinquency, perceived peer conduct, and resistance to peer influence. Conditional process analysis was used to test the hypothesis that the relationship between parent-adolescent relationship quality and adolescent problem behavior would be moderated by susceptibility to peer influence and perceptions of peer conduct. The overall model was significant; however, there were no significant direct effects of parent-adolescent relationship quality on problem behavior, perceived peer behavior on problem behavior, or susceptibility to peer influence on problem behavior. Correlational analyses revealed a significant correlation between problem behavior and perceived peer behavior. Therefore, the lack of significant direct effects may be explained by the study being under powered. The model proposed in this study should be further researched with a larger number of participants. An implication of this research is that delinquency is associated with perceptions of peer delinquency, which is consistent with past research. This information should be considered in the development of treatment interventions in order to prevent or decrease negative outcomes for adolescents involved with delinquent peers.

Book The Effect of the Parent adolescent Emotional Context on the Link Between Positive Parenting Practices and Adolescent Behavioral Adjustment

Download or read book The Effect of the Parent adolescent Emotional Context on the Link Between Positive Parenting Practices and Adolescent Behavioral Adjustment written by Joseph Molitor and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Positive parenting and a warm parent-child emotional climate predict low levels of child antisocial behavior, but the effect of positive parenting on antisocial behavior at different levels of the parent-child emotional climate has not been investigated prior to this study. This study examined the moderating effect of the parent-adolescent emotional climate on the association between positive parenting practices and conduct problems. The study investigated the following three hypotheses: (1) Parental warmth will be inversely related to adolescent externalizing behavior, controlling for initial levels of externalizing behavior and positive parenting practices. (2) Positive parenting practices will be inversely related to adolescent externalizing behavior, controlling for initial levels of externalizing behavior and parental warmth. (3) Parental warmth will moderate the effect of positive parenting practices on adolescent externalizing behavior, controlling for initial levels of externalizing behavior and the independent main effects of parental warmth and positive parenting practices on externalizing behavior. Specifically, the inverse association between positive parenting practices and adolescent externalizing behavior was expected to be stronger at high levels of parental warmth than at low levels of parental warmth. The results indicated, first, that parental warmth and the emotional climate do not independently predict adolescent conduct problems and, second, that the emotional climate does not moderate the relationship between positive parenting practices and adolescent conduct problems.
