Book excerpt: This thesis addresses whether children with severe behavioural problems lack emotional competence in key areas and, if so, whether this is reflected in their ability to appraise emotions in others. Self-rated and objectively rated emotional competence of children in mainstream schooling was compared with 20 children aged seven to 11 excluded for severe social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. In Study 1 self-report questionnaires measured affect perception, empathy and expressivity in typically developing (N=203), special educational needs (N=36) and socially, emotionally and behaviourally disordered (N=30) children in mainstream schooling. Younger children were less perceptive of affect than older children and scored lower for cognitive empathy. Boys scored lower in cognitive and affective empathy than girls and were less intimate, and more covert, in their expression of emotion. Special educational needs children appeared less emotionally perceptive than their peers. In Studies 2a and 2b, affect appraisal and the ability to describe emotional change were examined using a new measure employing pictorial representations of children in ambiguous postures and facial representations of emotion. Typical patterns of appraisal of possibly threatening, depressive and innocuous postures were established (N=242). A developmental progression in reasons given for emotional change was seen with older children providing more socially based and mentalising answers than younger children. Study 3 developed an interactive computerised measure to examine the point at which children recognise the emergence of emotion from an interpolation of photographic facial expressions. Eighty-five typically developing children manipulated 26 emotional changes, including emotion/emotion and emotion/neutral transitions and chose a point of uncertainty in the transformation. A significant effect was found for facial representations of fear and anger, indicating a threat detection mechanism in response to emergent emotion. In Study 4 children with severe behavioural problems were compared across all measures with typically developing children from the first three studies. Behaviourally challenged children were deficient in cognitive and affective empathy and exhibited a hostile appraisal bias when assessing ambiguous postures of other children. No deficit was found in the ability to evaluate emotional change and provide age-appropriate reasons. However, anger was dominant in the perception even over fear stimuli when assessing emotional transition. Overall, children excluded from mainstream schooling with severe behavioural problems showed a very different profile to mainstream children with behavioural problems, suggesting a qualitative difference in cognitive functioning that could have a predictive function. This thesis not only supports the premise that severe SEBD children exhibit altered emotional functioning but has developed a series of tests that will have ongoing value in applied research.

This lack is due in part to the priorities given to the educational and therapeutic needs of these children. Yet an understanding of the basic emotional processes in children with atypical development can only serve to promote more effective strategies for teaching and intervening in the lives of these children and their families and may contribute to our understanding of basic emotional processes as well. When referring to "emotions," the editors mean some complex set of processes or abilities, whether or not the topic is normal or atypical development. Specifically, they use the term "emotion" to refer to at least three things -- emotional expressions, emotional states, and emotional experiences. The focus of this volume, these three aspects of emotional life are affected by socialization practices, maturational change, and individual biological differences including, in this case, differences in children as a function of disability. Contributors examine the development of emotions in children with organic or psychological disorders as well as those in compromised social contexts making this volume of prime importance to developmental, clinical, and social psychologists, educators, and child mental health experts.

This research measured the effectiveness of the emotional awareness programme (EA Programme) in a different context, a child and youth care centre. The goal of the EA Programme is to cultivate children?s emotional awareness. The Gestalt theoretical approach rendered itself pragmatic to this study as various key concepts of this theory was integrated into the academic underpinnings. Emotional awareness benefits children in the sense that they are more equipped to handle stressful events. Children with emotional awareness demonstrate introspective skills and have a better understanding of emotions in their social contexts. They are better able to apply functional emotional regulation strategies which in turn nurture personal goal attainment and positive relationships with others. The advances in terms or their cognitive skills of children in middle childhood allow a better understanding of emotions and create an ideal platform for socio-emotional learning. Children in this phase of development have mastered the skills of reading, writing and reasoning, which are necessary to understand and participate in the EA Programme. Emotional awareness is specifically important for children who reside in a child and youth care centre. These children were exposed to some degree of trauma and experience the placement in alternative care in itself as disruptive. The literature describes the challenges children in a child and youth care centre face, which supports the assumption that interventions are needed to assist these children to develop effective emotional regulation strategies. The EA Programme is regarded as such an intervention. This investigation was executed from a quantitative research approach as the relationship between two variables was measured. The data was collected by using a standardised measuring instrument, the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale for Children (LEAS-C). The researched is catagorised as applied research as it focused an issue in practice, namely emotional awareness of children in alternative care. The quasi-experimental design that was followed was the comparison group pre-test, post-test design. This entailed that both groups completed the pre-test after which the experimental group was exposed to the EA Programme, then both groups completed the post-test. The availability sampling method was applied to select the respondents who were children in middle childhood residing in a child and youth care centre in the North-West Province. The LEAS-C is a standardised questionnaire that was developed by Dr. Jane Bajgar and Dr. Richard Lane (2003). The questionnaire is suitable to be completed by children as the questions are formulated in understandable language. The main conclusions drawn from this study are: Emotional awareness forms a central building block of the development of emotional intelligence, emotional competence and emotional regulation. Emotional awareness is regarded as a cognitive ability that can be learnt in order to develop other emotional abilities. Children placed in a child and youth care centre are specifically at risk to develop impaired emotional functioning as a result of trauma, maltreatment and the care-giving environment. Their disorganised emotional experiences translate into complex behavioural issues. Children placed in a child and youth care centre could specifically benefit from a programme, such as the EA Programme, that focus on nurturing skills that enhance emotional awareness. The research findings suggest that the EA Programme increased the experimental group's ability to be in contact with own emotions, their emotional vocabulary and emotional expression skills as well as their levels of emotional awareness. The EA Programme can be delivered as an effective intervention within the context of a child and youth care centre. The findings and conclusions derived from this study made a meaningful contribution to the field of social work as it focused on evaluating an intervention. This research specifically contributed to social work service delivery to looked after children in institutional settings.

And change certainly will be the buzzword in the foreseeable future. The rapid growth of information and communication technology as well as progress in educational, psychological, and allied research fields have many scholars questioning aspects of traditional school concepts. For example, should the classroom be "flipped" so that students receive instruction online at home and do "homework" in school? At the same time, inclusive education has changed the traditional landscape of special education and thus of deaf education in many if not all countries, and yet deaf children continued to lag significantly behind hearing peers in academic achievement. As a consequence of technological innovations (e.g., digital hearing aids and early bilateral cochlear implants), the needs of many deaf learners have changed considerably. Children who are emotionally aware have the knowledge of the innate nature of emotions as well as the ability to acknowledge and experience emotions. The importance of the development of emotional awareness is often overlooked, this more so in the South African educational system. It is for that reason that the goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an already developed Emotional Awareness Programme within a specific school setting. The study was based on evaluating the effectiveness of the Emotional Awareness Programme within a private school setting. The focus of the study was on children in the middle childhood phase of development and to evaluate whether emotional awareness can be taught within a classroom setting with the aid of an Emotional Awareness Programme. Emotional awareness in this study was not viewed as a stand-alone concept but contextualised as a prerequisite for emotional intelligence. The study further aimed to evaluate whether the implementation of the Emotional Awareness Programme for seven weeks with grade three learners had an influence on their emotional vocabulary, emotional expression and emotional awareness in general. The study was quantitative in nature as seen in the structured guidelines in terms of the modules and activities of the Emotional Awareness Programme and the predetermination of all that forms part of the research process, i.e. goal, objectives, type, design and research methodology. The study was based on applied research as it focused on an immediate issue in the discipline. The data collected from the standardised questionnaire, particularly the Levels of Emotional Awareness Scale for Children (LEAS-C) indicated that it is possible to enhance not only the emotional awareness of children in middle childhood but also the emotional vocabulary and emotional expression. It is therefore recommended that this Emotional Awareness Programme be incorporated within the South African school curriculum and possibly be stretched over a period longer than seven weeks. Inclusion of a broader target market for future research is also believed to be essential.
