Introduzione di Paolo Di Paolo «Quello non lo insegno.» Così rispondeva Giuseppe Pontiggia a chi gli chiedeva come diventare scrittore. Non basta infatti avere l'attitudine, la volontà, l'ambizione. Come per il nuoto, si possono però ottenere buoni risultati impadronendosi della tecnica, osservando i modelli, allenandosi duramente. Per scrivere «bene» (con stile) bisogna prima liberarsi da una serie di pregiudizi: che scrittori si nasca, che il talento e l'ispirazione contino più di un severo apprendistato, che un testo letterario (e in generale un testo efficace) nasca già perfetto anziché perfettibile. Di questo era convinto Pontiggia quando, nel 1985, inaugurava la prima scuola di scrittura in Italia. Una scuola in cui si imparava innanzitutto a leggere. Leggere in senso forte, cominciando dai classici, in un «corpo a corpo» con il testo pensato per affinare la capacità di giudizio e scoprire insieme le potenzialità e i limiti delle proprie risorse espressive. Ma soprattutto per lasciarsi emozionare dalle parole, per esplorarne le stratificazioni, per imparare a usarle in modo responsabile. Scrivere, per Pontiggia, non è trascrivere le proprie esperienze, sensazioni o memorie, ma andare incontro all'inatteso che sorprende, al nuovo che disorienta: pronti a tornare indietro, e a riscrivere se necessario, per dire nel modo migliore quanto si va scoprendo attraverso il linguaggio. Perché la scrittura è un viaggio che non si lascia pianificare, ma anche il risultato di un lavoro paziente, fatto di un rapporto concreto con il testo, in tutto simile a quello dell'artigiano all'opera nel suo laboratorio. Un laboratorio che Pontiggia ha allestito per anni durante i suoi incontri settimanali al Teatro Verdi di Milano, dialogando con un pubblico eterogeneo (studenti, professionisti, aspiranti scrittori). Le sue lezioni, pubblicate a metà degli anni Novanta su due riviste («Wimbledon» e «Sette»), sono ora raccolte in un unico volume. Trentatré conversazioni in cui l'autore, in forma di intervista, affronta i molteplici aspetti della scrittura «espressiva», a cui si aggiungono altre quattro lezioni, «per addetti ai lavori ma non solo», in cui la riflessione sulla scrittura diventa essa stessa un alto esempio di scrittura saggistica, ricca di aforismi e battute fulminanti; dove il confronto con i classici, ancora una volta, ci introduce nella biblioteca e nell'officina dello scrittore, pronti a carpirne i segreti.
