Book excerpt: Charlemagne's pivotal reign is still some distance in the future when Charles is born, the bastard son of Mayor of the Palace, Pepin de Gros. Pepin's jealous wife, Plectruda, will stop at nothing to see Charles dead, thus saving the power behind the Merovingian throne for her own sons. To protect him, twelve-year-old Charles is sent as soldier-in-training to the estate of nobleman Dodo. Here he meets and marries Dodo's orphan niece, Rotruda. All is well until Pepin de Gros dies. When Charles returns to the palace to protect his mother from Plectruda's clutches, Pepin's widow captures Charles and throws him in a dungeon, fully expecting him to rot and die there. With Egar's help, it appears Charles is dead. A nobleman, disenchanted with Plectruda's regency, rescues Charles' 'body'. Charles survives and gathers a following. He and his army of barbarian foot soldiers, armed with lances and casting axes then face the unstoppable Muslim cavalry, as they pour over the Pyrenees mountains into France, determined to wipe Christianity off the face of the land. "A compelling and heart-stirring story of the triumphant ascent to power and glory by Charles Martel, grandfather of Charlemagne." JoAnn Levy, Author of Daughter of Joy, A Novel of Gold Rush San Francisco. Web site: http://mysite.verizon.net/~billndi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of an aristocratic Carolingian man involved an array of behaviors and duties associated with his gender and rank: an education in arms and letters; training in horsemanship, soldiery, and hunting; betrothal, marriage, and the virile production of heirs; and the masterful command of a prominent household. In Be a Perfect Man, Andrew J. Romig argues that Carolingian masculinity was constituted just as centrally by the performance of caritas, defined by the early medieval scholar Alcuin of York as a complete and all-inclusive love for God and for fellow human beings, flowing from the whole heart, mind, and soul. The authority of the Carolingian man depended not only on his skills in warfare and landholding but also on his performances of empathy, devotion, and asceticism. Romig maps caritas as a concept rooted in a vast body of inherited Judeo-Christian and pagan philosophies, shifting in meaning and association from the patristic era to the central Middle Ages. Carolingian discussions and representations of caritas served as a discourse of power, a means by which early medieval writers made claims, both explicit and implicit, about the hierarchies of power that they believed ought to exist within their world. During the late eighth, ninth, and early tenth centuries, they creatively invoked caritas to link aristocratic men with divine authority. Romig gathers conduct handbooks, theological tracts, poetry, classical philosophy, church legislation, and exegetical texts to outline an associative process of gender ideology in the Carolingian Middle Ages, one that framed masculinity, asceticism, and authority as intimately interdependent. The association of power and empathy remains with us to this day, Romig argues, as a justification for existing hierarchies of authority, privilege, and prestige.

Book Charlemagne in Italy

Download or read book Charlemagne in Italy written by Jane E. Everson and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-01-24 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the many depictions of Charlemagne in the Italian tradition of chivalric narratives in verse and prose. Chivalric tales and narratives concerning Charlemagne were composed and circulated in Italy from the early fourteenth to the mid-sixteenth century (and indeed subsequently flourished in forms of popular theatre which continue today). But are they history or fiction? Myth or fact? Cultural memory or deliberate appropriation? Elite culture or popular entertainment? Oral or written, performed or read? This book explores the many depictions of the Emperor in the Italian tradition of chivalric narratives in verse and prose. Beginning in the age of Dante with the earliest tales composed for Italians in the hybrid language of Franco-Italian, which draw inspiration from the French tradition of Charlemagne narratives, the volume considers the compositions of anonymous reciters of cantari and the prose versions of the Florentine Andrea da Barberino, before discussing the major literary contributions to the genre by Luigi Pulci, Matteo Maria Boiardo and Ludovico Ariosto. The focus throughout is on the ways in which the portrait of Charlemagne, seen as both Emperor and King of France, is persistently ambiguous, affected by the contemporary political situation and historical events such as invasion and warfare. He emerges through these texts in myriad guises, from positive and admirable to negative and despised.

Book excerpt: Charles Martel's son, Pepin the Short, (who will become Charlemagne's father) yearns to become King of All Franks, a title the Merovingians have claimed for hundreds of years. Even should he succeed, can Pepin fight his beloved older brother, Carloman, for the crown? No such scruples hold him from warring with his younger half siblings. In the absence of a Merovingian on the throne, Pepin and Carloman surprise everyone by jointly ruling the Franks as Mayors of the Palace. When Carloman insists they need a Merovingian figurehead king, Pepin acquiesces. Carloman, in penance for an unforgivable act, resigns his office to become a monk, leaving Pepin in sole power over the Franks, 'ruled' by a do-nothing king. Pepin gains the crown through the power of the pope in Rome, thus establishing the idea of the divine right of kings. Then to protect his mentor, Pepin must scale the formidable Alps to battle the Lombards who threaten the pope and Rome. In donating the cities he wins to the papal chair, Pepin begins what will become the Vatican-geographic territory belonging to the pope. "Deftly written by Diana M. Johnson, Quest for the Crown is a compelling historical novel... engaging and enthusiastically recommended." James Cox, Editor-in-Chief, The Midwest Book Review.
