Book People Movements in the Punjab

Download or read book People Movements in the Punjab written by Frederick Stock and published by William Carey Publishing. This book was released on 1975-01-01 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Penned in the mid-1970s, People Movements in the Punjab gives an accurate analysis of the history of the church in the Punjab. After spending 12 years ministering in Pakistan, the authors set about finding the answers to the following questions: · What caused the church in the Punjab to grow from the 1880s into the first half of the 20th century? · Which missionary methods were effective, and which were ineffective? · What segments of society proved responsive? · Are any of these factors part of the present-day scene? Based on primary sources, including church and mission records, missionary and national leaders' biographies, and census reports, the author's well-written research provides a profound view of the churches' growth in the Punjab. The book includes a substantial appendix, "A Brief Comparative Study of Other Churches in Pakistan," which gives a wealth of information. And although this study is based on the growth of the church in Pakistan, the pattern of development and church growth principles apply to scores of areas on the Indian subcontinent as well. This authentic church history has great relevance for the church and her leaders today.

Book The Ethics of Staying

Download or read book The Ethics of Staying written by Mubbashir A. Rizvi and published by South Asia in Motion. This book was released on 2019 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Masters Not Friends, Mubbashir Rizvi lends a historical and ethnographic perspective to the rise of one of the largest, most successful land rights movements in South Asia, the Anjuman Mazarin Punjab (AMP), who, against all odds, successfully resisted the Pakistani military and made a case for their moral right to farmland. The case of AMP provides a unique lens through which to examine state and society relations in Pakistan, and bridge literatures from subaltern studies, military power, colonial technology and governance, and the language of claim-making. More broadly, Rizvi offers a glimpse of Pakistan that contrasts with its standard framing as a hub of radical militancy and terrorism.

Book Faith Gender and Activism in the Punjab Conflict

Download or read book Faith Gender and Activism in the Punjab Conflict written by Mallika Kaur and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Punjab was the arena of one of the first major armed conflicts of post-colonial India. During its deadliest decade, as many as 250,000 people were killed. This book makes an urgent intervention in the history of the conflict, which to date has been characterized by a fixation on sensational violence—or ignored altogether. Mallika Kaur unearths the stories of three people who found themselves at the center of Punjab’s human rights movement: Baljit Kaur, who armed herself with a video camera to record essential evidence of the conflict; Justice Ajit Singh Bains, who became a beloved “people’s judge”; and Inderjit Singh Jaijee, who returned to Punjab to document abuses even as other elites were fleeing. Together, they are credited with saving countless lives. Braiding oral histories, personal snapshots, and primary documents recovered from at-risk archives, Kaur shows that when entire conflicts are marginalized, we miss essential stories: stories of faith, feminist action, and the power of citizen-activists.

Book The Partition of the Punjab 1849 1947

Download or read book The Partition of the Punjab 1849 1947 written by Prem Vati Ghai and published by New Delhi : Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers. This book was released on 1986 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrations: 9 B/w Illustrations and 2 Maps Description: The kingdom of Punjab founded by Maharaja Ranjit Singh was short lived and passed into the hands of the British within a decade of his death in June 1839. The Partition of the Punjab, treats the history of Punjab from 1849 to 1947. Important events which changed the history of India and the effect these events had on Punjab are dealt with in detail. During the upheaval of 1857, Punjab stood solidly behind the British and enabled them to recapture Delhi. The century of British rule in Punjab brought peace and prosperity to its people. This in turn brought a change in the religious attitude of its people leading to the founding of the Arya Samaj. During the freedom struggle Punjab gave Lala Lajpat Rai and a host of others who gladly sacrificed all they had for a united India. April 13 is an unforgettable date for the people of Punjab; for it was on that day in 1919 that General Dyer ordered the massacre of people, who had assembled at Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, to protest against the deportation Dr. Kitchlaw. All these and many more incidents are described in vivid detail. A chapter on the aftermath of partition is also added. This book will be of great help to those interested in the history of freedom movement and to others who want to know the complete history of Punjab during the century before partition.
