Book Prosperity for all in the global economy world class skills

Download or read book Prosperity for all in the global economy world class skills written by Lord Leitch and published by Stationery Office. This book was released on 2006-12-12 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document contains the foreword and executive summary to the final report of the Leitch Review of Skills (ISBN 0118404865), one of a series of reviews commissioned by the Chancellor of the Exchequer to accompany the pre-Budget report 2006 (Cm. 6984, ISBN 0101698429). The final report considers the long-term skills needs of the UK economy to maximise economic growth and productivity and to promote social justice and social inclusion. It finds that although the UKs skills base has improved significantly over the last decade, it remains weak by international standards, and even if current targets to improve skills are met, we will still lag behind that of many comparator countries by 2020. The report concludes that a radical step-change is required across the skills spectrum to address these challenges, and makes a number of recommendations designed to help the UK achieve this raised ambition.

Book America in the Global Economy

Download or read book America in the Global Economy written by Ray Uhalde and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper the authors identified the size of America's home market as a crucial component of its historical comparative advantage. The authors showed that over the last four decades nearly 60 percent of per capita U.S. growth has been dependent upon growth in the domestic consumption. Thus, a comprehensive demand side strategy also must target the domestic consumers U.S. businesses know best. On the supply side, they asked themselves what education and skills matter for individual and national economic success in the global economy? The authors' research demonstrated that education matters for growth and college matters the most. Boosting college completion rates by just 10 percent would inject $125 billion into the economy over the long run. Education credentials often serve as a signaling devise that employers use to gauge what potential hires might know and be able to do on the job. Employers are really interested in the knowledge, skills and abilities people bring to the workplace, not just their education credentials. The authors examined a new data set to test this hypothesis and found preliminary evidence to support it. The authors showed that the greater the level of skill required of occupations, the higher the education levels of job incumbents. Secondly, they found that the greater the level of skill required of occupations, the greater the average earnings for workers in those occupations, after holding constant the level of education. Consequently, not only is there a clear payoff to education, there also is an independent payoff to higher skills. And that appears true not only for competencies like innovation, critical thinking, and complex problem solving, but also for basic skills and social skills that are important in interacting with colleagues and customers. They also found that these competencies were useful in estimating which jobs are most vulnerable to being offshored overseas. In conclusion, they recognize that globalization is neither automatically beneficial nor universally destructive. Neither their analysis nor history offer assurances, though their work does suggest some ways forward. Therefore, they should identify strategies that will enable America to seize opportunities presented by globalization while minimizing its negative effects on communities, workers, and their families. Average Earnings by Education of Workers and the Competency Level Occupations Require are appended. (Contains 14 figures, 8 tables and 57 endnotes.) [This paper was written with Zamira Simkins.].

Book Vocational Education and Training for a Global Economy

Download or read book Vocational Education and Training for a Global Economy written by Marc S. Tucker and published by Work and Learning. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vocational Education and Training for a Global Economy investigates the greatly varying ways in which four countries--Singapore, Switzerland, China, and the United States--prepare young people for the twenty-first-century workplace. The book looks first at the highly successful vocational education and training (VET) systems in Singapore and Switzerland, describing them in revealing detail and accounting for the assumptions and social arrangements that account for their unique features. It then turns to the two largest--and arguably the most dynamic--nations in the world, China and the United States, and examines the differing conditions, goals, and arrangements that have affected their respective programs for preparing their citizens for present and future work. At a time when a highly competitive global economy is prompting profound changes in the workplace and in the skills required for professional success, all countries feel a heightened sense of urgency in finding ways to guide and prepare young people for work. As this book makes clear, however, the resulting preparatory systems within these four countries differ dramatically--and for a wide range of economic, cultural, and political reasons. A detailed and incisive look at VET systems in the United States and abroad, Vocational Education and Training for a Global Economy will be indispensable reading for all who are concerned with preparing youth for today's competitive and demanding modern workplace.

Book Capitalism without Capital

Download or read book Capitalism without Capital written by Jonathan Haskel and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-16 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early in the twenty-first century, a quiet revolution occurred. For the first time, the major developed economies began to invest more in intangible assets, like design, branding, and software, than in tangible assets, like machinery, buildings, and computers. For all sorts of businesses, the ability to deploy assets that one can neither see nor touch is increasingly the main source of long-term success. But this is not just a familiar story of the so-called new economy. Capitalism without Capital shows that the growing importance of intangible assets has also played a role in some of the larger economic changes of the past decade, including the growth in economic inequality and the stagnation of productivity. Jonathan Haskel and Stian Westlake explore the unusual economic characteristics of intangible investment and discuss how an economy rich in intangibles is fundamentally different from one based on tangibles. Capitalism without Capital concludes by outlining how managers, investors, and policymakers can exploit the characteristics of an intangible age to grow their businesses, portfolios, and economies.

This book was released on 2023-07-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The connection between globalization and digitalization is intricate and multi-dimensional. Digitalization has facilitated and accelerated globalization, enabling businesses and individuals to connect and operate on a global scale.Digitalization has provided the technological infrastructure and tools that enable the seamless exchange of goods, services, information, and ideas across borders, while globalization has created the demand and opportunities for digitalization to thrive. At the same time, globalization has influenced the development and adoption of digital technologies. While this relationship has brought numerous benefits, it also poses challenges that require careful consideration and policy responses to ensure that the benefits of globalization and digitalization are shared inclusively and sustainably. In today's rapidly evolving world, technological advancements, globalization, and demographic shifts have significantly impacted the nature of work, requiring workers to acquire new skills and knowledge throughout their careers. In line with this, workforce transformation and education play crucial roles in the global economy as they enable individuals and societies to adapt to the changing demands of the labor market and drive economic growth. By enabling individuals to acquire new skills, fostering lifelong learning, and adapting education systems to meet the demands of the labor market, societies can effectively navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by the changing nature of work. Embracing these transformations can lead to a more skilled, adaptable, and inclusive workforce that drives economic prosperity.
