Book Pennsylvanian and Permian Fusulinids of Western Montana and Central Idaho

Download or read book Pennsylvanian and Permian Fusulinids of Western Montana and Central Idaho written by Richard Claude Weart and published by . This book was released on 1950 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pennsylvanian strata in southwestern Montana include the Quadrant and at least the upper beds of the Amsden Formation. Rocks of equivalent age are found throughout most of south-central Montana and extend into neighboring states to the east, south, and southwest, where they are known under various formational names. For some time it has been believed that a contribution to Pennsylvanian stratigraphy in this area could be made by study of the micro-fauna, particularly the fusulinids. For this study, sections previously measured and reported as being fairly complete and well-exposed were revisited for detailed examination. The sections examined were chosen with the idea in mind of obtaining a series of sections which would show the maximum variation in facies and thickness in relation to the presumed positions of the ancient Pennsylvanian shorelines. All types of sediments were examined for fusulinids, particular attention being paid to the shales, carbonates, and cherts. Nine sections of Pennsylvanian strata were examined and measured in detail. In addition, four other sections were examined for fusulinid remains. Fusulinids were found to occur in only three sections. Fortunately, these sections are situated in critical areas, thereby establishing important relationships. New information has been found concerning the correlation and geologic age of the Pennsylvanian strata. These data, as well as other pertinent information pertaining to the Pennsylvanian sediments, are discussed in the body of the text and summarized in the conclusions.

Book Regional Stratigraphy of North America

Download or read book Regional Stratigraphy of North America written by W.J. Frazier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An early reviewer of this book stated that he had difficulty assessing its marketability because it "falls between the cracks" of geological literature. We have designed this book to meet a need of modem geology: namely, a single source providing both detailed and synoptic stratigraphy of the various regions of North America, through geological time. Shortly after beginning work on such a book, we realized why it had not yet been written: it required six years of effort, assimilation of an incredible amount of information, and two years' additional work to cut the volume down to publishable size. Further, by the time the final chapter was written, the fIrst few were already out of date. Nevertheless, the book lies in front of you. It is intended to serve several purposes. As a textbook, it will serve the following courses: • Regional stratigraphy • Sedimentary tectonics • Regional tectonics • Advanced historical geology • Survey-level paleontology Obviously, not all portions of the book are relevant to all of the above courses. We assume the reader will retain this book after the particular course is done, and will use it as a reference book. Hopefully, others will obtain the book solely for reference purposes. We believe it will be especially useful for the working geologist or academic geologist seeking generalized and some moderately detailed information about a region or geological time interval which is unfamiliar.
