Book excerpt: Pondering June 22, 2012, 8:15 a.m. What benefit are penned words if they are meaningless? If I am penning simply to promote me, I am dead within. Some books are informative and entertaining, while others are a waste of trees. What have you been moved to read lately? What are you searching for an answer to? What is your burning desire to learn or understand? When you think you have that answer, ask yourself why. Inner conflict is a pretty good indicator of spiritual warfare. Does the preceding statement raise any red flags for you? At times, when Im experiencing conflict within, it has always resulted from my human nature and Satan battling my spirit. I have penned about much of this; Ive no doubt there will be more.

Book A Few Words about Words

Download or read book A Few Words about Words written by Joseph J. Diorio and published by Beaufort Books. This book was released on 2021-08-10 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Penned by a writer who had to teach himself the rules of English grammar, A Few Words About Words offers an easy and accessible approach to understanding and using the English language. In a world dominated by countless print and social media outlets, written communication is king. Writing "your" when you mean "you're" and "there" when you mean "they're" can make the difference between getting or not getting new business. A missing comma can result in a PR catastrophe, and a well-written line can be remembered for generations. And yet, many native speakers struggle with the English language. Spawned from the widely-circulated and beloved newsletter of the same name, Joe Diorio's A Few Words About Words blends quick-witted anecdotes from more than 30 years of newsletter entries that highlight the common, uncommon, and surprising grammar mistakes most English speakers make. The result is a digestible, all-encompassing look at English grammar. For anyone who has ever wondered whether "also" should follow or precede the verb; if there's a difference between 'preventive' or 'preventative'; or whether the Oxford comma is as important as everyone says it is, this book provides relief for many common grammar anxieties. Humorous, enlightening, and completely comprehensible, A Few Words About Words will be the go-to grammar guide you pick up and can't put down.

Book Shattered Glass in Birmingham

Download or read book Shattered Glass in Birmingham written by Randall C. Jimerson and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2014-03-03 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shattered Glass in Birmingham traces the experiences of a white northern family during the climax of the civil rights movement in Alabama's largest city. Recounted primarily from Randall Jimerson's perspective as one of five children of Reverend Norman C. "Jim" Jimerson, executive director of the Alabama Council on Human Relations, the narrative explores the public and private impact of the civil rights struggle. Based on extensive archival research as well as oral histories, Shattered Glass in Birmingham offers the reader a ground-level view of prejudice, discrimination, violence, and courage. In 1961 the Alabama Council on Human Relations charged Rev. Jimerson with the critical task of improving communications and racial understanding between Alabama's black and white communities, employing him to travel extensively throughout the state to coordinate the activities of Human Relations chapters across Alabama. Along the way, he developed close working relationships with black and white ministers, educators, and businessmen and served as an effective bridge between the communities. Rev. Jimerson's success as a community activist was due largely to his ability to gain the trust of both white moderates and key figures in the civil rights movement: Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth, Dr. Lucius Pitts, Rev. Ralph Abernathy, Rev. Wyatt T. Walker, Rev. Andrew Young, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He represents the hundreds of people who worked behind the scenes to help achieve the goals of civil rights activists. After Klan members killed four young girls in the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church in September 1963, Rev. Jimerson preserved several pieces of stained glass that had blown out of the church's windows. Similarly, Shattered Glass in Birmingham offers us a fresh and important perspective on these climactic events, supplying one of the many fragments that make up the complex story of our nation's fight for civil liberties.
