Book excerpt: Excerpt from Penhallow's Indian Wars: A Facsimile Reprint of the First Edition, Printed in Boston in 1726, With the Notes of Earlier Editors and Additions From the Original Manuscript Dr. Colman looms larger in the enterprise, than at first appears; he ends his Preface after the manner of his profession with the moral that the tale should teach, having begun it by group ing the historians of New England into two classes, honest and worthy Persons and some learned - an allusion now obscure, but as he speci fically mentions another Indian history, the Decennium I/uctuosum, by the Rev. Cotton Mather - so often designated as the learned Dr. Mather, - we may suspect that he had in mind some attribute of his clerical contemporary. Time may have softened many of the asperities of professional life in the Boston of thirteen thousand inhabitants. Dr. Colman was at the height of his popularity; he had declined the presidency of Harvard College and had published twenty-five of the fifty printed sermons listed by Thomas Prince. Book Memoir of the Hon Samuel Penhallow

Download or read book Memoir of the Hon Samuel Penhallow written by Nathaniel Adams and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoir of the Hon. Samuel Penhallow: One of the Counsellors of the Province of New-Hampshire, and Author of a Narrative of Indian Wars, &C His father was attached to the dissenting interest, and was intimate with the Rev. Charles Morton, rector of the parish of Blisland in the same county. Morton became obnoxious to the ruling party, and was silenced for non-conformity to the rites and ceremonies of the established church. He removed to Newington-Green, near London, where he opened a school for the instruction of youth, in the various branches of literature. His school soon became famous, and numbers resorted to it for education. In 1683, Penhallow being then about eighteen years of age, was placed under his care. He pursued his studies with diligence, and made such progress as not only to gain the approbation of his instructor, but to attract the attention of other gentlemen of science. He continued with Mr. Morton about three years, and until his school was broken up. The bishops and ecclesiastical authority of the Church did not choose that dissenters and puritans should be employed to superintend the education of the rising generation; and prohibited Mr. Morton from pursuing that employment. Mr. Morton then determined to take refuge in New-England, where he could enjoy that liberty of conscience, which was denied him in his native land. He had an affectionate attachment to his pupils, and requested some of them to accompany him. The subject of this memoir was one that was selected on this occasion, to whom Mr. Morton promised his favour and assistance. Penhallow with the consent of his parents accepted the proposals; they embarked for this country and arrived here in July, 1686. Before they left England, the society for propagating the gospel among the Indians, offered Penhallow twenty pounds sterling a year for three years, if he would make himself acquainted with the Indian language; and sixty pounds a year, afterwards during life, if he devoted himself to the ministry, and preached to them "at times."
