Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pen Pictures of Modern Authors These are not biographies that are collected here, but a series of sketches, anecdotes, and personal reminiscences relating to the more modern authors - that is, the authors who are now living, or who have died very recently and whose work belongs to the present half of the century. As the book is a compilation, the editor has occasionally been hampered by want of available material, and if the reader misses any face which he would like to have seen in a gallery of this sort, he will understand that it is because no satisfactory "pen picture" could be found. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Romantic Realities, Vol. 1 of 7: A Series of Historic Pen-Pictures, Illustrating the Romantic and Heroic Sides of Human Life Most Of us, says a modern writer, have lived a romance more beautiful and pathetic than ever yet has been described by the pen of man. The truth Of this assertion is illustrated in the following pages, wherein the romantic features Of many lives are portrayed. Our sub jects, taken from all classes Of society, from the occupants Of thrones to the toilers in fields and workshops, show that the lowliest as well as the loftiest lives are Often tinted with the glow and color of romantic thoughts, feel ings, relations, and actions. They suggest that the hum blest life has its own little romance, and that the noblest heroism Often animates the breast on which no diamonds shine or stars Of honor glisten. Book Modern Print Artefacts

Download or read book Modern Print Artefacts written by Patrick Collier and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on the close connections between literary value and the materiality of popular print artefacts in Britain from 1890-1930. The book demonstrates that the materiality of print objects-paper quality, typography, spatial layout, use of illustrations, etc.-became uniquely visible and significant in these years, as a result of a widely perceived crisis in literary valuation. In a set of case studies, it analyses the relations between literary value, meaning, and textual materiality in print artefacts such as newspapers, magazines, and book genres-artefacts that gave form to both literary works and the journalistic content (critical essays, book reviews, celebrity profiles, and advertising) through which conflicting conceptions of literature took shape. In the process, it corrects two available misperceptions about reading in the period: that books were the default mode of reading, and that experimental modernism was the sole literary aesthetic that could usefully represent modern life.

Book Pen Pencil and Poison

Download or read book Pen Pencil and Poison written by Oscar Wilde and published by Lindhardt og Ringhof. This book was released on 2022-04-06 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is one of Wilde’s most intriguing essays. Part biography, part social commentary, and part philosophical debate, he writes the biography of an art critic, who was also convicted of murder. However, in true Wildean style, there’s more to the essay than meets the eye. While documenting the life and crimes of Thomas Griffiths Wainwright, Wilde explores the ideas of dual identity, sin in the formation of the personality, and the relationship between crime and culture. ‘Pen, Pencil, and Poison’ is a fascinating insight into some of the conventions of the time. Oscar Wilde (1854 – 1900) was an Irish novelist, poet, playwright, and wit. He was an advocate of the Aesthetic movement, which extolled the virtues of art for the sake of art. During his career, Wilde wrote nine plays, including ‘The Importance of Being Earnest,’ ‘Lady Windermere’s Fan,’ and ‘A Woman of No Importance,’ many of which are still performed today. His only novel, ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ was adapted for the silver screen, in the film, ‘Dorian Gray,’ starring Ben Barnes and Colin Firth. In addition, Wilde wrote 43 poems, and seven essays. His life was the subject of a film, starring Stephen Fry.
