Book excerpt: Exploring the political climate during the final years of the reign of Charles II, when John Dryden wrote his great public poems and several of his dramatic works, Phillip Harth sheds new light on this writer's literary activity on behalf of the monarch. The poems Absalom and Achitophel and The Medall, and the dramatic works The Duke of Guise and Albion and Albanius, have commonly been considered in relation to such public events as the Popish Plot, the Exclusion Crisis, and the Tory Reaction, but that approach does not explain the noticeable differences among these works or the specific purposes for which they were written. Harth argues that the immediate contexts of these works were not the historical events themselves but a constantly developing series of propaganda offensives, both Tory and Whig, designed to influence public opinion toward fluctuating conditions. Pen for a Party traces the halting process by which the government of Charles II developed propaganda as an effective instrument for gradually winning the public's acquiescence in its divisive policies. It likewise shows how Dryden fashioned his own works to meet the needs of this propaganda campaign in each of its successive phases. Originally published in 1993. Book excerpt: From the writers of acclaimed blog Pen & Palate, a humorous coming-of-age (and mastering-the-art-of-home-cooking) memoir of friendship, told through stories, recipes, and beautiful illustrations. Getting through life in your twenties isn't easy--especially if you're broke, awkward, and prone to starting small grease fires in your studio apartment. For best friends Lucy Madison and Tram Nguyen, cooking was an escape from the daily humiliation that is being a twenty-something woman in a big city. Pen & Palate traces the course of Lucy and Tram's devoted friendship through miserable jobs and tiny apartments, first loves and ill-advised flings, successes and setbacks--always with a shared love of food at the center of the narrative. A modern take on Laurie Colwin's classic Home Cooking, this coming-of-age memoir for the Girls set weaves together comical (mis)adventures and recipes meant to be shared with a best friend and a bottle of wine.

Book excerpt: “A gorgeously written meditation on being a gay man in America now . . . A high school art history teacher, Sebastian Mote envies his queer students and their freedom to live openly the youth he lost to fear and shame. When he runs into his childhood friend Oscar Burnham at a wedding in Washington, DC, he can’t help but see it as a second chance. Now thirty-five, the men haven’t seen each other in more than a decade. But Oscar has no interest in their shared history, nor in the sense of belonging Sebastian craves. Instead, he’s outraged by what he sees as the death of gay culture: bars overrun with bachelorette parties, friends coupling off and having babies. For Oscar, conformity isn’t peace, it’s surrender. While Oscar and Sebastian struggle to find their place in a rapidly changing world, each is drawn into a cross-generational friendship that treads the line between envy and obsession: Sebastian with one of his students, Oscar with an older icon of the AIDS era. And as they collide again and again, both men must reckon not just with each other but with themselves. Provocative, moving, and rich with sharply drawn characters, Let’s Get Back to the Party introduces an exciting and contemporary new talent.

It concludes that parties in many countries are no longer bare reflections of traditional social groups. Download or read book Kosonike written by Dr. Michael Nicholas Wundah and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2018-06-22 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography skillfully captures the life and times of one of the illustrious Sierra Leoneans, emeritus professor Kosonike Koso-Thomas. Kosonike is a visionary, a philanthropist, and one of the most successful civil engineers in the West African subregion. Koso-Thomas is also a prolific writer. Among his fortes are autobiographies, biographies, and sentimental and aesthetic free-verse poetry. He has successful painting exhibitions to his credit in the United Kingdom and Sierra Leone. The book delves bravely into uncharted waters and reveals some contentious issues raised by conspirators during his tenure of office as the principal of Fourah Bay College and vice chancellor of the University of Sierra Leone. These revelations are for the edification of posterity. On top of that, the facts surrounding the issues are worth revealing. They will aid the solution of the challenges associated with the trying times that face the education sector in Sierra Leone and most of the African continent. The success stories of one of Sierra Leones finest minds are worth telling for the inspiration and enhancing of the recovery projects that have been undertaken, especially in the tertiary sector. The countrys development partners will find some of the recommendations made in this book extremely helpful. Articulated meticulously, they will rejuvenate the hitherto gold standard of education for which Sierra Leone was renowned in its heyday. Generally speaking, the recommendations are the prototypes required for the alleviation of the chronic funding challenges faced by higher education in Africa. Beautifully woven in modern creative-writing style, this biography is coated in rich language sustained by appropriate concepts that befit the genre. It whets the appetites of social planners, academicians, policy makers, and legislators. Above all, it tickles as well as inspires the thinkers of our times.
