Book Place Names of Hawaii

Download or read book Place Names of Hawaii written by Mary Kawena Pukui and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1976-12-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How many place names are there in the Hawaiian Islands? Even a rough estimate is impossible. Hawaiians named taro patches, rocks, trees, canoe landings, resting places in the forests, and the tiniest spots where miraculous events are believed to have taken place. And place names are far from static--names are constantly being given to new houses and buildings, streets and towns, and old names are replaced by new ones. It is essential, then, to record the names and the lore associated with them now, while Hawaiians are here to lend us their knowledge. And, whatever the fate of the Hawaiian language, the place names will endure. The first edition of Place Names of Hawaii contained only 1,125 entries. The coverage is expanded in the present edition to include about 4,000 entries, including names in English. Also, approximately 800 more names are included in this volume than appear in the second edition of the Atlas of Hawaii.

Download or read book Pele and Hiiaka written by Dietrich Varez and published by Petroglyph PressLtd. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the great epics of Hawaiian mythology is the story of Pele, goddess of Hawai'i's volcanoes, and her youngest sister, Hi'iakaikapoliopele. Pele was driven out of her homeland after a quarrel with her older sister Namakaokaha'i, a sea goddess. She readied her great double-hulled voyaging canoe and left Kahiki, sailing to Hawai'i. She was accompanied by a number of relatives, including her youngest sister, Hi'iaka, the heroine of our story. None of the islands seemed to suit Pele until she reached Hawai'i, the largest island. In the upland region, Pele settled into the fiery lava pit of Kilauea, and our story begins there. While in a dream state, Pele followed the sounds of hula pahu drums and traveled to Kaua'i, meeting the handsome young chief, Lohi'au. Pele asked her youngest sister, Hi'iaka, to undertake a journey to fetch her new lover. Hi'iaka, with her companions, encountered many adventures on her journey; battling reptilian mo¿o, healing people in need, making new friends and traveling throughout the islands. This is a passionate story of love, healing, betrayal, and reconciliation, culminating in the reunion of parted lovers, lavishly illustrated by one of Hawai'i¿s most celebrated artists, Dietrich Varez.

  • Author : kuʻualoha hoʻomanawanui
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2014
  • ISBN : 9780816679218

Download or read book Voices of Fire written by kuʻualoha hoʻomanawanui and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stories of the volcano goddess Pele and her youngest sister Hi'iaka, patron of hula, are most familiar as a form of literary colonialism--first translated by missionary descendants and others, then co-opted by Hollywood and the tourist industry. But far from quaint tales for amusement, the Pele and Hi'iaka literature published between the 1860s and 1930 carried coded political meaning for the Hawaiian people at a time of great upheaval. Voices of Fire recovers the lost and often-suppressed significance of this literature, restoring it to its primary place in Hawaiian culture. Ku'ualoha ho'omanawanui takes up mo'olelo (histories, stories, narratives), mele (poetry, songs), oli (chants), and hula (dances) as they were conveyed by dozens of authors over a tumultuous sixty-eight-year period characterized by population collapse, land alienation, economic exploitation, and military occupation. Her examination shows how the Pele and Hi'iaka legends acted as a framework for a Native sense of community. Freeing the mo'olelo and mele from colonial stereotypes and misappropriations, Voices of Fire establishes a literary mo'okū'auhau, or genealogy, that provides a view of the ancestral literature in its indigenous contexts. The first book-length analysis of Pele and Hi'iaka literature written by a Native Hawaiian scholar, Voices of Fire compellingly lays the groundwork for a larger conversation of Native American literary nationalism.

Book Paradise of the Pacific

Download or read book Paradise of the Pacific written by Susanna Moore and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-09 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Hawaii may be said to be the story of arrivals -- from the eruption of volcanoes on the ocean floor 18,000 feet below to the first hardy seeds that over millennia found their way to the islands, and the confused birds blown from their migratory routes. Early Polynesian adventurers sailed across the Pacific in double canoes. Spanish galleons en route to the Philippines and British navigators in search of a Northwest Passage were soon followed by pious Protestant missionaries, shipwrecked sailors, and rowdy Irish poachers escaped from Botany Bay -- all wanderers washed ashore. This is true of many cultures, but in Hawaii, no one seems to have left. And in Hawaii, a set of myths accompanied each of these migrants -- legends that shape our understanding of this mysterious place. Susanna Moore pieces together the story of late-eighteenth-century Hawaii -- its kings and queens, gods and goddesses, missionaries, migrants, and explorers -- a not-so-distant time of abrupt transition, in which an isolated pagan world of human sacrifice and strict taboo, without a currency or a written language, was confronted with the equally ritualized world of capitalism, Western education, and Christian values.

Book In the Land of Pele in the Land of the Extraordinary

Download or read book In the Land of Pele in the Land of the Extraordinary written by Kahu Robert Kalama Frutos and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-12-29 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pele is well-known as both the Hawaiian Goddess of Volcano and Fire. Her long-standing reputation of being of a wrathful and destructive force - is the one most recognized and always emphasized from the western standpoint... the Hawaiian perspective holds yet, an entirely different relationship to the Goddess Pele, including - not only an ancestral kinship and common lineage, but a remarkable endearment, and an extraordinary spiritual inner connectedness. One of deepest respect, alliance, and admiration. From this approach, Pele is not merely a wrathful and destructive force, but rather a benevolent benefactor... a Living Goddess that is Present in now time, a protector, a friend who is loving, generous, encouraging, inspiring and supportive. Pele plays many roles: Pele is the Goddess of the Volcano Pele is the Goddess of the Fire Pele is the Flame of Passion Pele is the Fire of Purpose Pele is the Goddess/Divine Mother. She is ultimately an expression of unconditional love, and the embodiment of the Divine Feminine. While this is not a factual rendering of the Goddess Pele, nor even a historical account of her feats and achievements, it is rather a lyrical, expressive account centered on Her True Spiritual Gifts, from a Mu - Hawaiian perspective... drawn from the Mu - Hawaiian ancient oral tradition of song and chant. This is also a wholehearted invitation to explore and discover Pele's deeper significance and magnificence, and the vital role she plays in the transformation of world today!"
