Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Pictures and Their Painters Never has France been dearer to us than she is today. And never have we longed more deeply to know more about her people. Our boys and her boys lie side by side over there. The underlying cause that brought them together was the same, and very quickly they recognized in each other the spirit that was theirs in common. This spirit rose above the trench and the battle front and gave them, sometimes in pathos and sometimes in fun, pictures that appealed to each alike. And after all what goes deeper into our hearts than the pictures of a nation? Fortunately genius in any line of art is not circumscribed by a particular language, for it speaks a tongue of its own understandable to like geniuses among all people. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern French Painters: Illustrated With Over 100 Plates It is too early yet to inquire whether, among the artists here under consideration, there are some who may prove some day the peers of those great names. But of one thing I feel certain: if the not insignificant period of artistic history of which this book treats has brought forth one or several artists worthy of those Masters, it is among those I have studied here that he or they will be found. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern French Painters F one wishes to explain house building to a child, it is best to show him how the foundations are laid and how the walls rise from them. So in trying to find an easy way to make a clear study of Modern Art, what it means and how it came about, I have tried to expose enough of the foundations to render easily intelligible the kind of house which has risen upon them. My intention has been to write a book not for the expert, but for the ordinary man who is interested in Art, or for the Art student who is still at the outset of his or her career. Download or read book Eug ne Fromentin written by Barbara Wright and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2000 with total page 672 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This, the first biography in English of Eugène Fromentin, seeks to follow on earlier publications focusing on the literary works, the visual art and the correspondence of the nineteenth-century French painter, novelist, traveller and art critic. It gives an overview of the complex relationship between word and image in his writing and in his painting. In particular, Fromentin's correspondence emerges as the power-house of his creative imagination, the addressee frequently prefiguring the viewer or the reader of the finished work of art, in a blend of inter-disciplinary or inter-textual analogies, which sometimes reveal a surprising generative evolution from letters to literature and beyond.

Book Jean Baptiste Pierre LeBrun

Download or read book Jean Baptiste Pierre LeBrun written by Bette W. Oliver and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-06-18 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean-Baptiste Pierre LeBrun's life was marked by his intense interest in art, first as an artist, and then from 1770 until his death in 1813, as an art dealer/connoisseur and as a participant in the transformation of the Louvre into a national museum during the French Revolution. He managed to accommodate whichever regime assumed power, from monarchy to republic to empire. He married the artist Elisabeth Vigée in 1776 and together they figured prominently in the pre-revolutionary cultural world of Paris. LeBrun travelled widely, buying art for his gallery and contributing to a number of aristocratic collections. His expertise in attributions of 17th-century Dutch and Flemish paintings was acknowledged internationally, while his reference work on the subject was considered the most comprehensive ever written. LeBrun, the grand-nephew of the illustrious artist Charles LeBrun, became one of the most successful art dealers in Paris. He played an active role in the politics of art between 1789 and 1802, serving as an expert-commissioner in restoration at the national museum. His inventories of artworks, confiscated from all over Europe by Napoleon's armies, have provided a valuable record of the development of the French national museum. In addition, his inventories have been useful in the identification and recovery of Nazi confiscations during World War II. LeBrun's accomplishments during a tumultuous period of political and artistic change present evidence of his contributions to the concept of the modern art museum, notably in the areas of conservation, restoration, and arrangement.

Book The Pen and the Brush

Download or read book The Pen and the Brush written by Anka Muhlstein and published by Other Press, LLC. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scintillating glimpse into the lives of acclaimed writers and artists and their inspiring, often surprising convergences, from the author of Monsieur Proust's Library With the wit and penetration well known to readers of Anka Muhlstein’s work, The Pen and the Brush revisits the delights of the French novel. This time she focuses on late 19th- and 20th-century writers--Balzac, Zola, Proust, Huysmans, and Maupassant--through the lens of their passionate involvement with the fine arts. She delves into the crucial role that painters play as characters in their novels, which she pairs with an exploration of the profound influence that painting exercised on the novelists' techniques, offering an intimate view of the intertwined worlds of painters and writers at the time. Muhlstein's deftly chosen vignettes bring to life a portrait of the nineteenth century's tight-knit artistic community, where Cézanne and Zola befriended each other as boys and Balzac yearned for the approval of Delacroix. She leads the reader on a journey of spontaneous discovery as she explores how a great painting can open a mind and spark creative fire.

Book excerpt: "Martin Bailey has written some of the most interesting books on Vincent’s life in France, where he produced his greatest work” - Johan van Gogh, grandson of Theo, the artist’s brother Studio of the South tells the story of Van Gogh’s stay in Arles, when his powers were at their height. For Van Gogh, the south of France was an exciting new land, bursting with life. He walked into the hills inspired by the landscapes, and painted harvest scenes in the heat of summer. He visited a fishing village where he saw the Mediterranean for the first time, energetically capturing it in paint. He painted portraits of friends and locals, and flower still life paintings, culminating in the now iconic Sunflowers. He rented the Yellow House, and gradually did it up, calling it ‘an artist’s house’, inviting Paul Gauguin to join him there. This encounter was to have a profound impact on both of the artists. They painted side by side, their collaboration coming to a dramatic end a few months later. The difficulties Van Gogh faced led to his eventual decision to retreat to the asylum at Saint-Remy. Based on extensive original research, the book reveals discoveries that throw new light on the legendary artist and give a definitive account of his fifteen months in Provence, including his time at the Yellow House, his collaboration with Gauguin and its tragic and shocking ending.
