Book Inside the Black Box

Download or read book Inside the Black Box written by Karen E. Mow and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Administrative design of research funding processes in the Australian Research Council and the National Health and Medical Research Council vary and subtle differences have impacts on the ways that decisions are made. Views from outside and inside the black box of selection reveal the consequences of process design on judgements of excellence and decision-making capacity. The dominant discriminator between applicants in Australian selection processes is track record of the applicant. Reliance on track record to determine the outcomes of all but the very best applications is very like awarding prizes for past work and is significantly different from the models of grant selection that operate in comparable international research councils.

Book Assessing Research

Download or read book Assessing Research written by Steven Wooding and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Research Assessment Exercise is used to assess the quality of, and determine core government funding for, research carried out in UK universities. In 2002 this process was reviewed (http://www.ra-review.ac.uk). This report provided evidence for the review; it describes workshops that investigated the academic community's views of research quality and attitudes towards models of assessment. Nine facilitated workshops were held in December 2002, which involved 142 academics and research managers from throughout the UK. The report outlines the recurring themes and issues raised by the participants. Key findings were that the overwhelming majority of participants thought research should be assessed using a system based on peer review; that there was a strong desire for a system with clear rules and transparent procedures; and that there was a need for improved systems to assess inter- and multi-disciplinary research work.

Book The Research Funding Toolkit

Download or read book The Research Funding Toolkit written by Jacqueline Aldridge and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2012-05-18 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing high quality grant applications is easier when you know how research funding agencies work and how your proposal is treated in the decision-making process. The Research Funding Toolkit provides this knowledge and teaches you the necessary skills to write high quality grant applications. A complex set of factors determine whether research projects win grants. This handbook helps you understand these factors and then face and overcome your personal barriers to research grant success. The guidance also extends to real-world challenges of grant-writing, such as obtaining the right feedback, dealing effectively with your employer and partner institutions, and making multiple applications efficiently. There are many sources that will tell you what a fundable research grant application looks like. Very few help you learn the skills you need to write one. The Toolkit fills this gap with detailed advice on creating and testing applications that are readable, understandable and convincing.
