Book excerpt: "Dangerous Zeros" (published by AuthorHouse) by John Marshall Mills is described by Blue Ink Review as a shrewd financial thriller involving myriad characters and intertwining plots that pits its main character against the forces of an abysmally corrupt financial world that holds zeros in a higher regard than the people it fleeces...’ ‘Gripping narrative’... ‘a compelling work of prose.’ In their obsessive focus on zeros, cynical bankers and politicians threaten the world’s financial systems with meltdown. This ‘knife at the throat’ is ignored by the story’s main character Jamie Gulliver, brilliantly numerate heir to his father’s high-end private bank, until Lehmann Brothers and the banking crash destroy his fortune and his future. Reluctantly, he is forced to do business with the feared founder of a shadowy international mega-business, and is sucked into a web of money-laundering, narcotics and deaths. He fights back. Mentally aided by an unlikely alter ego whose cryptic advice helps him to hang onto his sanity, he claws his way out of the pit on a journey life-changing for everyone who travels with him. When asked about the appeal of his book, Mills explains: “….the contemporary theme reflects concerns and experiences of many people facing the frightening erosion of their money, property and social values. In today’s financial world, who can you trust?” “...In Mills’ fast-paced novel, the number of zeros in your bank account dictates your popularity, but those zeros also attract the criminal element.” (Kirkus Reviews) “Mills draws drama from mistakes, missteps, and misadventures of the ‘masters of the universe’ who created the economic meltdown...” (Clarion Review)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Caputo's book is riveting. . . . A singular achievement of stylistic brio and impeccable scholarship, it breaks new ground in making a powerful case for treating Derrida as homo religiosis. . . . There can be no mistaking the importance of Caputo's work." —Edith Wyschogrod "No one interested in Derrida, in Caputo, or in the larger question of postmodernism and religion can afford to ignore this pathbreaking study. Taking full advantage of the most recent and least discussed writings of Derrida, it offers a careful and comprehensive account of the religious dimension of Derrida's thought." —Merold Westphal

Book excerpt: Patrick Murph faces a U.S. Attorney General who uses polygamy as a wedge issue to defame the genetic matching cause in her bid for the presidency. Patrick’s partner, Easter Beaulieu, wants to grow her genetic cause at warp speed and save the world from heritable diseases… But the corrupt AG vows to “crush the cult”—Easter’s perfect progeny program—to save a medical firm’s obscene profits from being axed. Key to pedigree growth is Amelita Davoli who sports an epidermal mutation, a sheen of gold. She’s slated to usher in a new era of genetic matching until… …the AG has her abducted. How far will the AG go to destroy a program meant to save humanity from genetic implosion? …one man …one mutant gene …one chance to save humanity …until the AG conspires to build a case that will bring down the pedigree cause and its genetic messiah. Patrick must stop her tyranny while not disclosing his own secret role in Easter’s dream of a genetic utopia. “Never has there been a cause that inspired more hope, or more fear, than a genetic utopia.” ~ Geneticist who discovered the Youth Gene. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early years of the twentieth century, Spokane was singled out for praise in the West for the quality of its architecture and the impressive way it had rebuilt after the devastating fire of 1889. Major credit for the city's distinctive character was extended to Kirtland Kelsey Cutter for his "rare architectural force and genius for design." His remarkable career, stretching from the Gilded Age to the Great Depression, allows a fascinating study of the evolution of an eclectic form of architecture that was an inevitable response to rich regional and historical influences during a time of transition from frontier settlements to modern city. Cutter's influence was felt beyond Spokane--in Seattle, other areas of Washington, and in Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. He was also responsible for buildings in the East and even for one in England. After financial problems ended his career in the Northwest, he began anew at age sixty-three in southern California, and worked there as an architect until his death in 1939 at age seventy-nine. Henry Matthews presents a comprehensive study of the whole body of Cutter's work, with ample photographs and illustrations. The book is based on exhaustive research in both the Northwest and California, revealing the influences on Cutter and his associates, the processes at work in the design and construction of the buildings, and the relations between the architect and the many people who commissioned his work. Particularly useful to Matthews's research was a collection of 290 sets of drawings, as well as office accounts, letters, and books from Cutter's library--materials acquired by the Eastern Washington State Historical Society. He also was able to interview former assistants and clients, who provided valuable insights on the architect and the way Cutter worked. In addition, many of the architect's residences, hotels, clubs, and commercial buildings are still standing. This book adds significantly to an understanding of Western urban and regional history. But Cutter's experimentation in many styles and the imaginative nature of his work make for a study that goes beyond regional limits and sheds light on national trends. Winner of the 1999 Washington State Book Award
