Book Ruminations Selected Philosophical Historical and Ideological Papers Volume 1 Part 2 The Finite

Download or read book Ruminations Selected Philosophical Historical and Ideological Papers Volume 1 Part 2 The Finite written by Eric v.d. Luft and published by Gegensatz Press. This book was released on 2020-09-13 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1970s I have pursued three separate but overlapping and sometimes simultaneous careers: (1) philosopher / writer / teacher / historian of the long nineteenth century, 1789-1914; (2) editor / translator / photographer / publisher / biographer / encyclopedist; (3) cataloging librarian / rare books and special collections librarian / historian of medicine. Somehow these three vocations have garnered me some acclaim, even an entry in Who's Who in America. Each of them has resulted in some published or presented works. Because these works have been scattered in a wide variety of venues, some of which have gone out of print or have otherwise become generally unavailable - and of course with the oral presentations being gone as soon as they are given - I have thought it wise to select, epitomize, and bring them together in one place - here. Thus, what follows in these volumes is what I consider to be the most important of my shorter works. All translations are my own unless otherwise indicated.

Book Nietzsche and Dostoevsky

Download or read book Nietzsche and Dostoevsky written by Jeff Love and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After more than a century, the urgency with which the writing of Fyodor Dostoevsky and Friedrich Nietzsche speaks to us is undiminished. Nietzsche explicitly acknowledged Dostoevsky’s relevance to his work, noting its affinities as well as its points of opposition. Both of them are credited with laying much of the foundation for what came to be called existentialist thought. The essays in this volume bring a fresh perspective to a relationship that illuminates a great deal of twentieth-century intellectual history. Among the questions taken up by contributors are the possibility of morality in a godless world, the function of philosophy if reason is not the highest expression of our humanity, the nature of tragedy when performed for a bourgeois audience, and the justification of suffering if it is not divinely sanctioned. Above all, these essays remind us of the supreme value of the questioning itself that pervades the work of Dostoevsky and Nietzsche.

Book excerpt: Hegel's Lectures on Aesthetics present a systematic and historical overview of the nature and development of art in light of its meaning and philosophical significance. This book considers Hegel's aesthetics from a variety of perspectives. With a strong and clear introduction by William Maker, the individual essays address Hegel's treatment of music, painting, comedy, and architecture, as well as his earlier writings on art, his relations to Schiller and to Schlegel, his treatment of romanticism, the place of aesthetics in the system, and his controversial claims about the overcoming of art. Several perspectives focus specifically on the contemporary relevance of Hegel's aesthetics in light of developments in art since his time, and especially in connection with modernism, postmodernism, and deconstruction. Contributors include William Desmond, Brian K. Etter, Andrew G. Fiala, Martin Gammon, Edward Halper, Stephen Houlgate, David Kolb, Stephen C. Book Theologically Engaged Anthropology

Download or read book Theologically Engaged Anthropology written by J. Derrick Lemons and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After years of discussion within the field of anthropology concerning how to properly engage with theology, a growing number of anthropologists now want to engage with theology as a counterpart in ethnographic dialogue. Theologically Engaged Anthropology focuses on the theological history of anthropology, illuminating deeply held theological assumptions that humans make about the nature of reality, and illustrating how these theological assumptions manifest themselves in society. This volume brings together leading anthropologists and theologians to consider what theology can contribute to cultural anthropology and ethnography. It provides anthropologists and theologians with a rationale and framework for using theology in anthropological research.

Book A Companion to Friedrich Nietzsche

Download or read book A Companion to Friedrich Nietzsche written by Paul Bishop and published by Camden House. This book was released on 2012 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An advanced introduction for students and a re-orientation for Nietzsche scholars and intellectual historians on the development of his thought and the aesthetic construction of his identity as a philosopher. Nietzsche looms over modern literature and thought; according to Gottfried Benn, "everything my generation discussed, thought through innerly; one could say: suffered; or one could even say: took to the point of exhaustion -- allof it had already been said . . . by Nietzsche; all the rest was just exegesis." Nietzsche's influence on intellectual life today is arguably as great; witness the various societies, journals, and websites and the steady stream ofpapers, collections, and monographs. This Companion offers new essays from the best Nietzsche scholars, emphasizing the interrelatedness of his life and thought, eschewing a superficial biographical method but taking seriously his claim that great philosophy is "the self-confession of its author and a kind of unintended and unremarked memoir." Each essay examines a major work by Nietzsche; together, they offer an advanced introduction for students of German Studies, philosophy, and comparative literature as well as for the lay reader. Re-establishing the links between Nietzsche's philosophical texts and their biographical background, the volume alerts Nietzschescholars and intellectual historians to the internal development of his thought and the aesthetic construction of his identity as a philosopher.
