Abstract: The transformation of Hong Kong into a high-density city has created a unique three-dimensional urban fabric defined through networks of urban activity and infrastructure within tight spatial constraints of mountainous slopes and the island shoreline. In Hong Kong urban development, the government performs a dual role both as landlord and as administrator determining the development agenda. With limited space available for development high land price policies have restricted land supplies and priority is given to 'economic space' rather than 'life space'. This has created a city of mobility based on consumption where privatized public spaces such as shopping malls, corporate plazas and elevated walkways are linked primarily to promote shopping. Public spaces are increasingly managed by private parties, and the degree of publicness of such spaces is often not clearly distinguishable to their potential users. Due to Hong Kong's population density of approximately 33,000 persons/km2, practices of everyday life are increasingly limited by multiple restrictions controlling the use of spaces that only seem to be public. The district of Central, Hong Kong features an urban network of both publicly and privately maintained elevated pedestrian walkways that provide a secondary circulation space. Designed according to commercial priorities, the walkway system in Central typically links privately owned second floor lobbies with similar owners to promote consumption. Although these regulated spaces are required to allow public access 24 hours a day, pedestrian connectivity seems merely an after thought. In such private public spaces, pedestrians move between consumption nodes through a maze of displays and windows filled with luxury consumer goods. This study takes focus on the walkways in Central thus investigating publicness specifically within the context of Hong Kong's high-density urban fabric, then within a wider context of elevated pedestrian walkway systems in Asian Pacific cities. To this end, this thesis employs an empirical case study methodology consisting of a series of observational studies. Each of these studies publicness transcribed through observations of use, users and use patterns. This study identifies a distinction that underlies the discussion of publicness: that of non-place as opposed to place. The distinction of space and place relates to whether users establish personal relationships to the spaces they use and has drawn much critical attention in urban studies over the past several decades. Places typically provide the stage for social practices. The relationship between place and mobility at an elevated level has however, not been studied in detail yet. As mobile urban populations pass through places more than we dwell in them, a new type of space has emerged to facilitate a 'frictionless passage', or non-place. Within this realm of non-place pedestrians pass through zones of movement like passengers experiencing a lack of relationship or disconnectivity with a space. This leads to the question whether elevated pedestrian walkways consisting of spatial flows,

Book Of Papers and Protests Hong Kong responds to Occupy Central Volume 2

This book was released on 2016-03-06 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The protests continued and both sides settled into a siege mentality and refused to compromise. The protests ended not with an agreement, nor a truce, but with the court that ordered the streets be cleared. Later, with the Legislative Council's vote about Beijing's election proposal a return to the status quo was enforced but did nothing for the lingering distrust between both sides. This book deals with the government reactions to those protests. It shows the various government public announcements, court injunctions and US reports which were strongly criticized by the Hong Kong government. Also included are the events of the Mong Kok riot during the 2016 Lunar New Year.

Abstract: Abstract of the thesis entitled The Implications of Spatial and Social Structures for Time Patterns of Pedestrian Movements in Urban Streets Submitted by CHU Cheuk Hung, Sid For the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in December 2006 Human activities occupy territorial as well as time-space. At least since the 1970s, ''space of time'' (or time-space) has been suggested as a new dimension in facilitating the planning of a city. However, so far the practical application of this idea has not been realized. In Hong Kong, a shortage of flat land has been the reason for its unique urban form of a densely built environment along narrow streets. Although newly developed districts have been promoted as the ideal of high-rise buildings set in large open spaces, the traditional street environment still appears to be the most vital part of urban Hong Kong. As the movement of pedestrians has increasingly become an issue for urban planners in Hong Kong, time-space is suggested as a possible resource for vitalizing the traditional street environment. This study explores the implications of the spatial and social structures of the urban realm for the time patterns of pedestrian movement in Hong Kong''s street environment. The study''s objective is to create a theoretical framework for the dimension of time-space in city planning, and to establish a methodology for creating preliminary models which can test the feasibility of this approach. In case studies of the districts: Wan Chai, Mong Kok and Sham Shui Po in Hong Kong, multiple regression was applied to variables comprising urban elements as identified in street-level facilities, general land-use and transportation facilities, to generate models of the time patterns in the daily cycle of pedestrian flow-rate and density. The result supports the hypothesis that similar spatial settings of urban elements (in the categories of street-level facilities, general land-use and transportation facilities) are likely to generate similar time patterns of pedestrian movement. This suggests that the propensity of pedestrians to follow a particular time-use pattern in their street environment is influenced by the spatial setting of urban elements, a propensity which offers an opportunity for street activities. The result also indicates that different urban elements have their specific characteristics which influence the generation of pedestrian activities, which is fairly consistent across districts. The finding reveals that the provision of urban elements in quantitative terms and the volume of pedestrian movement do not stand in a direct proportional relationship. This contrary relationship is especially significant for the land-use elements of office and residential space, which suggests the inadequacy of the contemporary philosophy of pedestrian planning in Hong Kong. Besides the spatial setting of urban elements, there is also evidence that the social structure of a district has implications for the time pattern of pedestrian movement, reflected in the time-use patterns of different social groups in their daily activity routines. The study concludes that the adoption of time-space as another dimension in the vitalization of a pedestrian environment in the urban streets of Hong Kong is a matter of urgency. The methodology proposed in this study has been v

Book Hong Kong Architecture 1945 2015

Download or read book Hong Kong Architecture 1945 2015 written by Charlie Q. L. Xue and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the transformation from colonial to global – the formation, mechanism, events, works and people related to urban architecture. The book reveals hardships the city encountered in the 1950s and the glamour enjoyed in the 1980s. It depicts the public and private developments, and especially the public housing which has sheltered millions of residents. The author identifies the architects practising in the formative years and the representatives of a rising generation after the 1980s. Suffering from land shortage and a dense environment, the urban development of Hong Kong has in the past 70 years met the changing demands of fluctuating economic activities and a rising population. Architecture on the island has been shaped by social demands, the economy and technology. The buildings have been forged by the government, clients, planners, architects, many contractors and end-users. The built environment nurtures our life and is visual evidence of the way the city has developed. Hong Kong is a key to East Asia in the Pacific Era. The book is a must-read for a thorough understanding the contemporary history and architecture of this oriental pearl. Endorsement: “Hong Kong sets an extreme example of hyper-density living. MTR’s Kowloon Station project offered my firm the unique opportunity to contribute to a new type of fully integrated three dimensional transport mega-structure, conceived as a well-connected place for people to live, work and play. Through Charlie Xue’s book, one can see how a compact city works and high density integrated development indicates a sustainable path for modern city making.” Sir Terry Farrell, CBE, Principal, Farrells "Well researched and refreshingly well structured, Charlie Xue's latest book comprehensively shows how Hong Kong's post-war urban architecture both tracks and symbolizes the former British colony's rise to success - a must read for architecture and culture buffs alike." Peter G. Rowe, Raymond Garbe Professor of Architecture and Urban Design, Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor. “An essential addition to the growing literature on Chinese architecture, the title of the book belies the full scope of Xue’s extensive history. Covering Hong Kong’s postwar transition from defeated colony to Pacific Age power house, Xue expertly traces the evolution of the city’s ambitious and innovative programs of integrated high density urban design and infrastructure, as well as changing architectural fashions. In a time when many Western governments have all but abandoned public housing programs, Xue’s book is a timely reminder of what can be achieved.” Professor Chris Abel, author of Architecture and Identity, Architecture, technology and process and The Extended Self.“/p>
