It by no means pretends to be a deep, comprehensive, critical study of the Peasant and the Peasant question; that is reserved for a future work. It is indeed but the frame of the picture of the life-history of the teeming millions of those who form the real back-bone of Russia. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Russian Sketches, Chiefly of Peasant Life No Russian who loves the literature of his country can hear that one or other of its masterpieces has been translated into German, or French, or English without mingled feelings of' pleasure and anxiety - pleasure that the treasures of that literature should be opened to a foreign nation anxiety lest they should be presented to it in a dress unworthy of their beauties; for how difficult it is to render into any language, whether of Latin or Teutonic origin, the power, the pathos, the striking illustrations, the quaint humour, above all the delicate lights and shades which give the Russian literature its unique charm. Book Old Peter s Russian Tales Classic Reprint

Download or read book Old Peter s Russian Tales Classic Reprint written by Arthur Ransome and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Peter's Russian Tales The stories in this book are those that Russian peasants tell their children and each other. In Russia hardly anybody is too old for fairy stories, and I have even heard soldiers on their way to the war talking of very wise and very beautiful princesses as they drank their tea by the side of the road. I think there must be more fairy stories told in Russia than anywhere else in the world. In this book are a few of those I like best. I have taken my own way with them more or less, writing them mostly from memory. They, or versions like them, are to be found in the coloured chap-books, in Afanasiev's great collection, or in solemn, serious volumes of folklorists writing for the learned. My book is not for the learned, or indeed for grown-up people at all. No peoplewho really like fairy stories ever grow up altogether. This is a book written far away in Russia, for English children who play in deep lanes with wild roses above them in the high hedges, or by the small singing becks that dance down the grey fells at home. Russian fairyland is quite different. Under my windows the wavelets of the Volkhov (which has its part in one of the stories) are beating quietly in the dusk. A gold light burns on a timber raft floating down the river. Beyond the river in the blue midsummer twilight are the broad Russian plain and the distant forest. Some where in that forest of great trees - a forest so big that the forests of England are little woods beside it - is the hut where old Peter sits at night and tells. This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How the Peasant Owner Lives in Parts of France, Germany, Italy, Russia A comparison between the condition of peasant owners in the principal countries of Europe as given in different official reports lately published is so extremely interesting, that I have collected these papers from the Nineteenth Century, etc., as a very small contribution to so large a subject. I have added a fresh paper on the application of the system to Ireland, and have inserted a map of a French estate, to show by the eye the enormous inconveniences inherent in the "pulverisation of the land," and what is almost worse, the scattering of the plots and scraps, over half a commune, even when belonging to the same owner, and the consequent impossibility of carrying out any decent agriculture. Book Folk Tales From the Russian Classic Reprint

Download or read book Folk Tales From the Russian Classic Reprint written by Verra X. Kalamatiano De Blumenthal and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Folk Tales From the Russian N Russia, as elsewhere in the world, folklore is rapidly scattering before the practical Spirit of modern progress. The traveling peasant bard or story teller, and the devoted nyanya, the beloved nurse of many a generation, are rapidly dying out, and with them the tales and legends, the last echoes of the nation's early joys and sufferings, hopes and fears, are passing away. The student of folk-lore knows that the time has come when haste is needed to catch these van ishing songs of the nation's youth and to pre serve them for the delight of future generations. In sending forth the stories in the present vol ume, all of which are here set down in print for the first time, it is my hope that they may enable American children to share with the children of Russia the pleasure of glancing into the magic world of the old Slavic nation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soul of the Russian N spite of the war, and in spite of the friendship between Russia and England, a friendship becoming more firmly ce mented every day, there are still a great many people to whom our Slav ally remains merely a name. True, books in plenty have recently dealt with that country in many varying forms, but, in the main, they have consisted either of consecutive narrative requiring steady reading, or have been serious works making appeal chiefly to the student.
