Book excerpt: “The peacock has replaced the penguin.”--GQ, 1969 In the 1960s men’s fashion, particularly in England, witnessed an extraordinary rebirth that led to lasting social, cultural, and commercial change – what media commentators coined the Peacock Revolution. The Day of the Peacock takes a fascinating look at the shops, celebrity photographers, tailors, and fashionable men who made up the “Swinging Sixties” scene. Neatly evoking the ‘60s atmosphere of optimism and opportunity, this richly illustrated memoir by fashion insider Geoffrey Aquilina Ross looks at the era’s most dashing figures –fashion designer and Carnaby Street entrepreneur John Stephen; Savile Row tailor Tommy Nutter, whose clients included Mick Jagger, the Beatles, and Elton John; photographers Cecil Beaton, David Bailey, and Patrick Lichfield; hairdresser Vidal Sassoon, actors Michael Caine and Terence Stamp– and discusses such iconic London shops as Granny Takes a Trip, Blades, Hung on You, and Mr Fish. With photographs, ephemera, and outfits from the V&A’s superb archives, The Day of the Peacock brings back an unforgettable time.

Book Television Aesthetics and Style

Download or read book Television Aesthetics and Style written by Steven Peacock and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Film Studies has successfully (re)turned attention to matters of style and interpretation, its sibling discipline has left the territory uncharted - until now. The question of how television operates on a stylistic level has been critically underexplored, despite being fundamental to our viewing experience. This significant new work redresses a vital gap in Television Studies by engaging with the stylistic dynamics of TV; exploring the aesthetic properties and values of both the medium and particular types of output (specific programmes); and raising important questions about the way we judge television as both cultural artifact and art form. Television Aesthetics and Style provides a unique and vital intervention in the field, raising key questions about television's artistic properties and possibilities. Through a series of case-studies by internationally renowned scholars, the collection takes a radical step forward in understanding TV's stylistic achievements.

Download or read book Peacock Revolution written by Daniel Delis Hill and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Peacock Revolution in menswear of the 1960s came as a profound shock to much of America. Men's long hair and vividly colored, sexualized clothes challenged long established traditions of masculine identity. Peacock Revolution is an in-depth study of how radical changes in men's clothing reflected, and contributed to, the changing ideas of American manhood initiated by a 'youthquake' of rebellious baby boomers coming of age in an era of social revolutions. Featuring a detailed examination of the diverse socio-cultural and socio-political movements of the era, the book examines how those dissents and advocacies influenced the youthquake generation's choices in dress and ideas of masculinity. Daniel Delis Hill provides a thorough chronicle of the peacock fashions of the time, beginning with the mod looks of the British Invasion in the early 1960s, through the counterculture street styles and the mass-market trends they inspired, and concluding with the dress-for-success menswear revivals of the 1970s Me-Decade.

Book The Daughters of Mrs Peacock

Download or read book The Daughters of Mrs Peacock written by Gerald Bullett and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-09-14 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Peacocks are five in family: father, mother, and three daughters. The year is 1870 or thereabouts. But though the opening chapter has the cool detachment of a 'period piece', it is not long before we are caught up in a passionate concern with the girls' love affairs and the undercurrent of conflict between the two generations. By his self-imposed discipline of Victorianism Mr Bullett has succeeded in creating a story more tense and exciting than many a self-styled 'thriller'- the intimate story of three marriageable young ladies, each of whom, though they are united in family affection, is a person apart, with her own special quality and character. They live in a small comfortable world, with a dryly humorous father and an affectionate mother who knows all the answers. Why should they wish to escape from such sweet security? And yet ...

Book Song Blue and White Porcelain on the Silk Road

Download or read book Song Blue and White Porcelain on the Silk Road written by Adam T. Kessler and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2012-07-25 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western scholars of ancient Chinese ceramics have long thought blue and white porcelain manufactured before the Ming (1368-1644 A.D.), dates to the Yuan (1279-1368 A.D.). Even in China today these porcelains are still termed “Yuan Blue and White.” Based upon first-hand surveys of sites in Inner Mongolia, Adam T. Kessler’s Song Blue and White Porcelain on the Silk Road demonstrates that blue and white was made during the Song (960-1279 A.D.) ended up in the hands of the Xi Xia (1038-1226 A.D.) and the Jin (1115-1234 A.D.). Blue and white found today in hoards was buried prior to Mongol invasions of China in the 1200s. Sites from the Philippines to Egypt have yielded Song blue and white. Also reviewed is the cobalt-bearing ore used by Song China to create blue and white.
