Seminole hunting towns on Peace River lay in a five or six mile wide belt of land centered on and running down the river from Lake Hancock to below present-day Fort Meade. Oponay, who also was named Ochacona Tustenatty, was sent into Florida as a representative to the Seminoles on behalf of the Creek chiefs remaining loyal to the United States during the Seminole War. Oponay occupied the land adjacent to Lake Hancock and Saddle Creek. Peter McQueen and his party occupied the area to the south of Bartow. Quite likely their settlement included the remains of Seminole lodges and other facilities located on the west bank near the great ford of the river at Fort Meade. This important strategic position would have allowed the Red Sticks (Indians) to control not only access to the hunting grounds to the south, but communication and the trade with the Cuban fishermen at Charlotte Harbor, as well as the passage of representatives of Spain and England through the harbor.

It flows through mountain canyons and broad prairies for some eight hundred miles till its waters are joined by those of the mighty Athabaska, to sweep northward to Great Slave lake. This huge lake, a veritable inland ocean, feeds the Great Mackenzie river, which flows northward a thousand miles and drains an area of over half a million square miles. Two large mountain rivers, the Finlay and the Parsnip, the one flowing southerly, the other northerly, unite their waters at Finlay Forks at the foot of mount Selwyn, towering feet above them, and the larger river thus formed by their confluence is known as the. Peace. From this inspiring source, with an initial width of 300 feet, the Peace runs in an easterly direction through the mountains and foothills to burst forth at Hudson Hope, on the upper limit of the Peace River block, into the vast plateaus it drains. Below Hudson Hope it widens out and flows with a uniform current through a valley cut deep across the surrounding plains. Fort St. John, British Columbia, is on its left limit in the Peace River block. Dunvegan is also on its left bank, in Alberta, and here is located a ferry where the old wagon road from Edmonton crossed to continue to lake Saskatoon. Finlay Forks, Hudson Hope, Fort St. John, and Dunvegan are still practically trading posts, but little changed from early days. But sixty miles farther down stream, the old Peace River Landing, or Peace River Crossing, has given way to the new thriving town of Peace River, now linked with steel to Edmonton and the outside. This point on the river was formerly reached from Edmonton by a two or three weeks' trying stage journey over a trail that spelt discomfort and hardship at every turn, whereas now one can travel by rail with all the comforts of dining and sleeping cars in twenty-six hours over practically the same route. From here modern steamboats ply up and down the river, a ferry crosses it, and a giant steel bridge is now being built to span it, to allow the rails to push farther west and north. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Description of Surveyed Townships in the Peace River District: In the Provinces of Alberta and British Columbia The area included in the district herein described lies between the north boundary of township 68 and the north boundary of township 112, and extends from the east boundary of range 9 west of the Fifth meridian to the western boundary of Alberta. It also includes the area known as the Peace River Block, comprising three and one-half million acres in the northerly part of British Columbia adjacent to Alberta. The total area of the whole district is about 53,000 square miles, or a little larger than the combined areas of the provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The Peace River District can be reached by the Edmonton, Dunvegan and British Columbia Railway, which runs northwesterly from Edmonton, passing south of Lesser Slave Lake and continuing westerly through Spirit River and Pouce Coupe districts to British Columbia. The main line is now constructed as far as Spirit River City in tp. 78-5-6, and although passenger train service is yet established only as far as McLennan, in tp. 77-19-5, construction trains run the whole distance to Spirit River City. Passenger service will be established the whole distance as soon as the wooden bridges over the streams are replaced by more substantial structures. A branch line from McLennan to Peace River Crossing is now in operation, and another branch line from Spirit River City to Grande Prairie is under construction. Peace River Crossing can now be reached from Edmonton in about twenty-four hours, whereas this trip formerly took about two weeks. The difference in time alone is a great advantage, to say nothing of the comfort and convenience of the present mode of travel. It is intended, at some future date, to continue the railway across Peace River, at Peace River Crossing, and from there to construct two branch lines, one running westerly about forty miles north of the river, and the other north and east along the left bank of the river to Fort Vermilion. At Peace River Crossing the river, which is about a quarter of a mile wide, may be crossed on the ice till about April 21. In summer passengers and freight are taken across by a cable ferry, the current being the propelling power. From there a good wagon road has been constructed on the north side of the river to Dunvegan, where the river is again crossed by ferry, the country being too rough on the south side for travelling between Dunvegan and the Crossing. The wagon road continues on the north side of the river from Dunvegan to Fort St. John, but as yet it is not in very good condition. The most difficult part is at the valley of North Pine River which is 800 feet deep. At this point the wagons must be unloaded and let down the bank empty. The road is some distance back from the river throughout most of its length, as the valleys of the streams which have to be crossed are very deep near Peace River, but much shallower farther back. It is not very much travelled in summer, but in winter many loaded sleighs pass over it. A sleigh road leads from Dunvegan south through Spirit River Settlement and then west to Fort St. John; in its present condition, however, it is impassable in summer. A longer road but good for transportation by wagon, extends from Dunvegan south to Lake Saskatoon, and thence along Beaverlodge River to Pouce Coupe Prairie.
