Book Toward Peace Security Southern

Download or read book Toward Peace Security Southern written by Harvey Glickman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 1990.This volume originates with a conference at Haverford College, April 28-30, 1989. On that weekend an international group of scholars, inside and outside governments, from Africa and elsewhere, assembled to address the theme, "Toward Peace and Security in Southern Africa." The conference was based on a sense of urgency concerning the continuing plight of the region -- reflected in the renewed state of emergency in South Africa and the declining economies in southern Africa - as well as, paradoxically, a sense of impending opportunity for South Africa and the region, as manifested in the Angola-Namibia accords recently negotiated.

Book Community of Insecurity

Download or read book Community of Insecurity written by Laurie Nathan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the formation, evolution and effectiveness of the regional security arrangements of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Nathan examines a number of vital and troubling questions: * why has SADC struggled to establish a viable security regime? * why has it been unable to engage in successful peacemaking?, and * why has it defied the optimistic prognosis in the early 1990s that it would build a security community in Southern Africa? He argues that the answers to these questions lie in the absence of common values among member states, the weakness of these states and their unwillingness to surrender sovereignty to the regional organization. Paradoxically, the challenge of building a co-operative security regime lies more at the national level than at the regional level. The author's perspective is based on a unique mix of insider access, analytical rigour and accessible theory.

Book Demilitarisation and Peace Building in Southern Africa

Download or read book Demilitarisation and Peace Building in Southern Africa written by Peter Batchelor and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2004 , this work is based on a collaborative research project, this trilogy considers the dynamics of demilitarisation and peace-building in southern Africa in the aftermath of major violent conflicts. The overall aim of the research is to support and facilitate the achievement of sustainable peace and human development in southern Africa, by analysing demilitarisation and peace-building processes in the region and identifying policy options and interventions for peace-building. The central focus of the research is the extent to which demilitarisation following the termination of wars has contributed to broad processes of peace-building in the affected region. Has the military in southern Africa downsized and refocused towards new roles? Has there been a 'peace-dividend', allowing more investment in economic and human development, thereby dealing with some of the root causes of conflict? Volume I provides a conceptual framework for the analysis of demilitarisation and peace-building processes, applicable particularly in the southern Africa context. This volume argues that a broad concept of peace-building has to take into account economic, political, social and cultural factors, at the local, national and regional level.

Book South Africa s Weapons of Mass Destruction

Download or read book South Africa s Weapons of Mass Destruction written by Helen E. Purkitt and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2005-05-11 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Africa's Weapons of Mass Destruction offers an in-depth view of the secret development and voluntary disarmament of South Africa's nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons program, Project Coast. Helen E. Purkitt and Stephen F. Burgess explore how systems used for nuclear, biological, and chemical weapons in South Africa were acquired and established beyond the gaze of international and domestic political actors. On the basis of archival evidence from Project Coast and their own extensive interviews with military and political officials, Purkitt and Burgess consider what motivates countries to acquire and build such powerful weaponry and examine when and how decisions are made to dismantle a military arsenal voluntarily. Questions such as how to destroy weapons safely and keep them from reappearing on international markets are considered along with comparative strategies for successful disarmament in other nation-states.

Book War and Peace in Southern Africa

Download or read book War and Peace in Southern Africa written by Robert I. Rotberg and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The new South Africa, as well as the surrounding southern region, is finally free of apartheid and colonial rule. Civil wars have ended; democracy is everywhere. Economically, South Africa and the region are beginning to grow more rapidly than ever before. But serious impediments to sustainable growth and effective participatory government remain. President Nelson Mandela's African National Congress won a strong victory in South Africa's 1994 elections and has governed with skill and ambition ever since. Nevertheless, crime rates have soared, as have the number of illegal and conventional small arms, car hijackings, trade in drugs, illegal immigrants, and all manner of attacks on the political and social stability of the state. This book puts these serious societal problems in perspective and provides fresh answers and recommendations. The book includes chapters on crime rates and criminal syndicates, the proliferation of conventional arms, illegal populations movements, drug trafficking, the South African army, and a concluding chapter on African armies and regional peacekeeping. The contributors are Jacklyn Cock, University of the Witwatersrand; Robert Gelbard, Assistant Secretary of State for Drug Enforcement and Legal Affairs; Jeffrey Herbst, Princeton University; Mark Malan, Mark Shaw, and Hussein Solomon, Institute for Security Studies; Katherine Marshall, the World Bank; Steven Metz, U.S. Army War College; Greg Mills and Glenn Oosthuysen, South African Institute of International Affairs; C.J.D. Venter, South African Police Service; and Joan Wardrop, Curtin University, Australia. Copublished with the World Peace Foundation
