Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Year of Miracle: A Tale of the Year One Thousand Nine Hundred Rebelspear was anxious, terribly anxious, there was no doubt of that, for he had now been waiting many months for the incoming of patients, but as yet none had responded to the mute appeal of that brand-new brass plate which so eloquently declared the inexperience of its owner. After finishing his medical education, and obtaining his licence to kill or cure, he had found himself a fully qt'alified MD. With comparatively little money at his disposal. The rent, rates, taxes, and furnishings of the respectable - looking house in Weymouth Street, the constant paying out and nothing coming in, had reduced that comparatively little to almost next to nothing and as civilised man cannot live without a certain amount of capital, Dr. Rebelspear's future looked very gloomy indeed. He was young - just turned thirty he was clever - proved by mmdry mystical letters tailing after his mame; he was hopeful - widelt'cet the sprat-to-catch-a-mackerel house in Weymouth Street but notwithstanding all these encouraging qualifications, it seemed as though this poor young man would be worsted in his encounter with the world. There were many, many doctors, and, as a compensatory law, 'there were many, many patients but he was one of the many for mer, and these many latter did not come his way. So, as he could not forcibly drag them into his consulting-room, he had to sit there biting his nails and waiting - waiting for nothing, it appeared to him, unless it was the dawn of the twentieth century. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hundred Days Bernard st. Armand drew rein an instant upon the border of the wood to watch the glory of the setting sun as it dipped, a mighty arc, into the rolling waters of the Mediterranean Sea. Then he buttoned his cape tightly about his beardless Chin, and turned his willing horse toward the desolate chalet which had become his home. How still it was - how expressive of the true wood land solitude, the mossy path with the pines above him and the pines below; the green mountains for his altitudes; the molten, fiery sea for his remote} horizon. Book Up Tunket Road

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ever since Thoreau's Walden, the image of the American homesteader has been of someone getting away from civilization, of forging an independent life in the country. Yet if this were ever true, what is the nature and reality of homesteading in the media-saturated, hyper-connected 21st century? For seven years Philip Ackerman-Leist and his wife, Erin, lived without electricity or running water in an old cabin in the beautiful but remote hills of western New England. Slowly forging their own farm and homestead, they took inspiration from their experiences among the mountain farmers of the Tirolean Alps and were guided by their Vermont neighbors, who taught them about what it truly means to live sustainably in the postmodern homestead--not only to survive, but to thrive in a fragmented landscape and a fractured economy. Up Tunket Road is the inspiring true story of a young couple who embraced the joys of simple living while also acknowledging its frustrations and complexities. Ackerman-Leist writes with humor about the inevitable foibles of setting up life off the grid--from hauling frozen laundry uphill to getting locked in the henhouse by their ox. But he also weaves an instructive narrative that contemplates the future of simple living. His is not a how-to guide, but something much richer and more important--a tale of discovery that will resonate with readers who yearn for a better, more meaningful life, whether they live in the city, country, or somewhere in between.

Book Boats and Boating in the Adirondacks

Download or read book Boats and Boating in the Adirondacks written by Hallie E. Bond and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 1998-08-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adirondack history is a tale written o~ the water. In the Adirondacks, people have traveled, conducted warfare, hunted and fished, gone to church, proposed marriage, and driven logs in, on, from, or by water. Without boats, small and large, Adirondack history—social, recreational, commercial, and environmental—would be an affair entirely different from what we have come to know. In this lavishly illustrated account, Hallie E. Bond presents a history of these boats—canoes, sailboats, power launches, outboards, and the indigenous guideboat—that figure prominently in the overall history of the Adirondacks. The pre-contact Indians paddled dugout and bark canoes; in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries these craft were joined by skiffs and bateaux. Between 1820 and World War II, a distinctive tradition of boat building developed, culminating in the famous Adirondack guideboat. As the nineteenth century progressed, a variety of small, fresh water, musclepowered boats was produced in the Adirondacks—an assemblage matched by only a few places in the country. There were the canoes and the men that made them famous—John Henry Rushton and Nessmuk—and the guideboats and their builders—H. Dwight Grant and Willard Hanmer. In the early twentieth century, the development of the internal combustion engine irrevocably changed not only boat use and design, but life and leisure in the Adirondacks. Bond skillfully captures the whole panorama of boats and boating in the Adirondacks, from early dugouts and bateaux to the highpowered inboards that won Gold Cup races on Lake George and the Kevlar pack canoes of today. Drawing on her experience as an historian and Curator of Collections and Boats at the Adirondack Museum, Bond places events and trends of the region in the context of national and international history and describes the significant contribution of the Adirondacks in the early twentieth-century development of recreation and travel in America. Boats and Boating in the Adirondacks also includes a descriptive catalog of boats from the museum's own collection with nearly two hundred illustrations in addition to those in the narrative, a list of boatbuilders active in the North Country before 1975, and a valuable glossary of terms.
