Book Algorithm and Software for Proactive Pothole Repair

Download or read book Algorithm and Software for Proactive Pothole Repair written by Leila Sadeghi and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Potholes are a common pavement distress, particularly appearing during the spring freeze-thaw period in northern climates. Potholes reduce ride quality, and if left unrepaired can lead to rapid pavement deterioration. Typically, when a pothole appears a repair crew is dispatched to place patch mixture in the hole with the hope that the patch will last until such time as a more permanent repair can be made. This reactive approach to potholes can often be too late to prevent further pavement damage and also makes it difficult for repairs crews to be scheduled in the most cost effective manner. In this study, the relation between traffic loads combined with weather records, such as temperature, freeze-thaw cycles and the numbers of potholes requiring patching was investigated in an attempt to develop a model to predict pothole formation and distinguish the routes which are prone to pothole formation before the potholes begin to form. If pothole prediction were possible, this proactive approach would enable agencies to plan and schedule maintenance activities more cost and time effectively thus increasing ride safety and mobility. To achieve the objective, four years of maintenance data from Indiana routes were collected and statistically analyzed to develop a model to estimate the probability of occurrence of a pothole due to annual average daily traffic and climate. The model indicates how significant traffic loads combined with weather condition influence the pothole. Also, although traffic loads and weather conditions are the essentials for potholes to form, the effect of pavement condition on the initiation of new potholes cannot be disregarded.Additionally, this study began the development of a basic roadway distress evolution model by employing several standard statistical tools, such as, the empirical cumulative distribution functions (CDF) and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (KS), to a pavement condition dataset. The goal of the model was to predict and rank areas of probable future concern by likelihood and severity. The resulting analysis showed promise but the data resolution was too low to achieve predictions on the desired fine scale.

Book Pothole Prevention and Innovative Repair

Download or read book Pothole Prevention and Innovative Repair written by and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pothole repairs continue to be a major maintenance problem for many highway agencies. There is a critical need for finding long-lasting, cost-effective materials and construction technologies for repairing potholes. This research effort investigates critical components associated with pothole formation and pothole repair and proposes solutions to reduce the occurrence of potholes and increase the durability of pothole repairs. The components include investigating and documenting pavement preservation activities, experimental work on traditional repair materials as well as innovative materials and technologies for pothole repairs, stress analysis of pothole repairs to identify whether certain geometric configurations are more beneficial than others, evaluating cost analyses to determine the effectiveness of various repair methods. A number of conclusions and recommendations were made. Potholes are mainly caused by the delayed response to timely fixing common pavement distresses. The state of Minnesota has a number of preservation strategies that are available and have been successfully used. Recommendations are made to improve these strategies using documents made available as part of new Every Day Counts, EDC-4, initiative. Currently, there are no required specifications for patching materials. Mechanical testing can be used to select patching materials based on the estimated durability of the pothole repair, such as short-, medium-, and long-term. A number of new materials and technologies are available for more durable solutions for winter pothole repairs, however, they require additional heat source and are more expensive.

Book Gravel Roads

Download or read book Gravel Roads written by Ken Skorseth and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book Evaluate and Develop Innovative Pavement Repair and Patching

Download or read book Evaluate and Develop Innovative Pavement Repair and Patching written by Lawrence M. Zanko and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In support of a broader MnDOT effort to evaluate current practices, materials, and policies for pavement patching and repair for both asphalt and concrete pavements, the University of Minnesota Duluth Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI) conducted additional evaluation, refinement, field testing, and performance monitoring of two taconite-related approaches to pavement repair that rely on mixes/techniques that contain (or are enhanced by) taconite mining byproducts and co-products. The first taconite-related approach to pavement repair uses a rigid pavement/pothole repair compound formulation developed and patented by NRRI that is fast-setting, taconite-based, and contains no petroleum or Portland cement. Depending on the formulation, the repair compound can be water-activated or activated by a chemical solution. A water-activated formulation referred to as Rapid Patch was the focus of the investigation. The second taconiterelated approach to pavement repair employs a high-power (50kW), vehicle-based (truck-mounted) microwave system for in-place pothole/pavement repair/recycling in which magnetite and/or magnetite-containing aggregate (taconite rock) can enhance microwave absorption and therefore the system’s performance. The two repair alternatives evaluated during this project merit further development and consideration, as the field performance of both suggests they have long-term potential for more widespread use. Based on feedback from maintenance personnel who used and/or observed both repair alternatives during the project, both alternatives would benefit from operational modifications that would reduce the deployment time required to complete a repair and increase the number of repairs that can be accomplished during a single shift. Doing so would likely lead to greater acceptance and more widespread use.

Book Innovative Materials Development and Testing

Download or read book Innovative Materials Development and Testing written by Thomas P. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pothole repair experiment, conducted as part of the Strategic Highway Research Program H-106 project, is the most extensive attempt to date to improve the state of the practice for pothole repair operations. Pothole repair in asphalt concrete pavements is one of the most commonly performed maintenance operations for most agencies, especially in areas where cold winters and warm, wet springs contribute to accelerated pavement breakup every year. The SHRP H-106 project is the first major effort undertaken to test cold-mix asphalt patching materials, those most commonly used for winter and springtime pothole repairs. The primary goal of this project was to identify those materials and techniques that are potentially the most cost effective.
