Book The Office of Governor General

Download or read book The Office of Governor General written by Sir Paul Hasluck and published by Carlton, Vic. : Melbourne University Press. This book was released on 1979 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The events of November 1975 sparked off lively debate as to what the Governor-General does. The real point at issue in that controversy was not whether a Governor-General has the power to dismiss a Prime Minister. The fact that the power was exercised is proof that the power exists. The question to be asked is whether the Govenor-General was justified by the facts as he saw and interpreted them, and, if he were justified, whether he was wise to use the power. There is a difference between an extreme situation and a customary action. The controversy over the dismissal of a Prime Minister concentrated attention on one aspect, but in this lucid essay Sir Paul Hasluck sets out the wide range of the Governor-General's duties and the place of office in the whole structure of Australian government.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In both law and literature, Nicholas Hasluck has been a player and a commentator. In this fascinating memoir he uses diaries of his time as a Judge and as Chair of the Literature Board to explore intriguing issues at the start of the new century, from culture wars in Australia to al-Qaeda's terrorist attack in New York. He turns an astute gaze on battles in the courts and everyday struggles and delusions. He watches self-styled intellectual leaders nail their colours to the mast with an air of heroic virtue, though nearly everyone in the room agrees with them. In times when history is often misinterpreted, how can we pass on what has been learnt? How can Australians come together to build a better future, rather than denigrating our institutions and shared past? His views are those of a writer with a principled mind and a ready sense of humour.

Book excerpt: A lively memoir in which Nicholas Hasluck explores the life and times of his elder brother Rollo, an adventurer brimful of bright ideas and his own way of going at things. Rollo's family moved from Perth to Canberra in the war years. His father's work on post-war security led to further service in New York and a return to Perth in the late 1940s. Friendships forged in schooldays set the scene for Rollo's convivial but precarious way of life in the 1960s. The story covers Rollo's marriage, his involvement in local theatre, escapades on Rottnest Island, management of a night club, the making of deals in real estate during the nickel boom and some final travels. Rollo's style is mirrored in a line marking the sudden end of his story: He won laughter and the love of friends.

Book Paul Hasluck

Download or read book Paul Hasluck written by Robert Porter and published by Uwa Pub. This book was released on 1993 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sir Paul Hasluck died in January 1993 at the age of eighty-seven. Throughout his career - as journalist, historian, academic, author, poet, public servant, diplomat, parliamentarian, Minister of the Crown, contender for the prime ministership, and Governor-General - he maintained a clear and consistent set of principles and a strong sense of public duty. Because of this, he did not fit the contemporary mould of a politician." "Hasluck joined the Department of External Affairs in 1941, becoming one of Dr Herbert Vere Evatt's principal advisers and eventually being made Australia's first representative at the United Nations in New York. After a breach with Evatt over a matter of principle, Hasluck resigned from the department, and in 1949 was elected to Federal parliament." "Hasluck's ministerial responsibilities included Territories, encompassing Papua and New Guinea, the Northern Territory and Aboriginal policy; Defence; and External Affairs. As a Minister, Hasluck was a hard task-master. He demanded action and he did not suffer fools lightly." "As a parliamentarian, Hasluck held a higher view of parliamentary representation than the narrow quest for winning elections. He had the opportunity to gain the prime ministership in 1968, but his dislike of self-promotion cost him this prize." "Between 1969 and 1974 Hasluck held the office of Governor-General. He approached the vice-regal task with dedication and vigour, convinced that the office was not merely one of 'rubber stamp' but carried the responsibility to counsel, warn and advise." "In tracing this remarkable career, Robert Porter highlights Hasluck's prodigious, almost legendary, capacity for hard work; his strong intellectual capability and penetrating and enquiring mind; his clear understanding of the definition of the roles and responsibilities of each area of government; his strong and enduring sense of duty; and his commitment to serving his country's interests in a selfless and dedicated manner. Paul Hasluck: A Political Biography is a thoroughly researched and well-crafted study of one of Australia's most important, yet underrated, post-war political figures."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Book Tiberius with a Telephone

Download or read book Tiberius with a Telephone written by Patrick Mullins and published by Scribe Publications. This book was released on 2018-10-29 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The oddly compelling story of a man regarded as Australia’s worst prime minister. William McMahon was a significant, if widely derided and disliked, figure in Australian politics in the second half of the twentieth century. This biography tells the story of his life, his career, and his doomed attempts to recast views of his much-maligned time as Australia’s prime minister. After a long ministerial career under Menzies, McMahon became treasurer under Harold Holt, and fought a fierce, bitter war over protectionism with John McEwen. Following Holt’s death in 1967, McEwen had his revenge by vetoing McMahon’s candidature for the Liberal Party’s leadership, and thus paved the way for John Gorton to become prime minister. But almost three years later, amid acrimony and division, McMahon would topple Gorton and fulfill his life’s ambition to become Australia’s prime minister. In office, McMahon worked furiously to enact an agenda that grappled with the profound changes reshaping Australia. He withdrew combat forces from Vietnam, legislated for Commonwealth government involvement in childcare, established the National Urban and Regional Development Authority and the first Department of the Environment, began phasing out the means test on pensions, sought to control foreign investments, and accelerated the timetable for the independence of Papua New Guinea. But his failures would overshadow his successes, and by the time of the 1972 election McMahon would lead a divided, tired, and rancorous party to defeat. A man whose life was coloured by tragedy, comedy, persistence, courage, farce, and failure, McMahon’s story has never been told at length. Tiberius with a Telephone fills that gap, using deep archival research and extensive interviews with McMahon’s contemporaries and colleagues. It is a tour de force — an authoritative and colourful account of a unique politician and a vital period in Australia’s history.

Book Commonwealth Responsibility and Cold War Solidarity

Download or read book Commonwealth Responsibility and Cold War Solidarity written by Dan Halvorson and published by ANU Press. This book was released on 2019-01-01 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Australia's engagement with Asia from 1944 until the late 1960s was based on a sense of responsibility to the United Kingdom and its Southeast Asian colonies as they navigated a turbulent independence into the British Commonwealth. The circumstances of the early Cold War decades also provided for a mutual sense of solidarity with the non-communist states of East Asia, with which Australia mostly enjoyed close relationships. From 1967 into the early 1970s, however, Commonwealth Responsibility and Cold War Solidarity demonstrates that the framework for this deep Australian engagement with its region was progressively eroded by a series of compounding, external factors: the 1967 formation of ASEAN and its consolidation by the mid-1970s as the premier regional organisation surpassing the Asian and Pacific Council (ASPAC); Britain's withdrawal from East of Suez; Washington's de-escalation and gradual withdrawal from Vietnam after March 1968; the 1969 Nixon doctrine that America's Asia-Pacific allies must take up more of the burden of providing for their own security; and US rapprochement with China in 1972. The book shows that these profound changes marked the start of Australia's political distancing from the region during the 1970s despite the intentions, efforts and policies of governments from Whitlam onwards to foster deeper engagement. By 1974, Australia had been pushed to the margins of the region, with its engagement premised on a broadening but shallower transactional basis.
