Book Paul Claudel s Saintly Solution

Download or read book Paul Claudel s Saintly Solution written by Elizabeth A. Frohlich and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This dissertation details how Paul Claudel passes biographical information through the filter of fiction, and achieves a distinctive understanding of one of the most inscrutable figures in French literature. For Paul Claudel, fiction and life writing were not mutually exclusive. He claimed that a poet devotes his life to both the creation of fiction and the search for his true self. Claudel considered his plays to be adaptable, and desired them to evolve organically over the course of his lifetime. L'Annonce faite a Marie, described by the poet as the drama that dominated his existence, exemplifies this conception of literature. Fifty-six years of Claudel's life were devoted to the revision of this one work, which exists in four distinct versions. The first chapter takes a biographical approach, analyzing the conception of the first version of La Jeune Fille Violaine (1892). The dissertation then enumerates the alterations made with each avatar of the play, investigating the motivations behind each of the modifications. The second chapter addresses the second version of La Jeune Fille Violaine (1901) and Claudel's insertion of himself into the action, as well as his musings on artistic creation. In analyzing L'Annonce faite a Marie (1911), the third chapter explores the transformation of the drama into a medieval mystery play, focusing on Claudel's hagiographical source readings that influenced the development of the work. Chapter four's discussion of the Act IV variant (1938) examines the significance of the Father's return, which occludes the presence of the architect. The fifth chapter then explains the omnipresence of Camille Claudel in the drama, and her role as Paul Claudel's double. The establishment of the Version Definitive (1948) constitutes Claudel's last attempt at unifying his self. Paul Claudel creates a work that is not written linearly but rather evolves in tandem with its creator. The superposition of the various versions of L'Annonce faite a Marie provides insight into Claudel's creative methods and clarifies his goals for the drama.

Book excerpt: Since the publication of her first book, Emmanuel Levinas: The Problem of Ethical Metaphysics, in 1974-the first book about Levinas published in English-Edith Wyschogrod has been at the forefront of the fields of Continental philosophy and philosophy of religion. Her work has crossed many disciplinary boundaries, making peregrinations from phenomenology and moral philosophy to historiography, the history of religions (both Western and non-Western), aesthetics, and the philosophy of biology. In all of these discourses, she has sought to cultivate an awareness of how the self is situated and influenced, as well as the ways in which a self can influence others. In this volume, twelve scholars examine and display the influence of Wyschogrod's work in essays that take up the thematics of influence in a variety of contexts: Christian theology, the saintly behavior of the villagers of Le Chambon sur Lignon, the texts of the medieval Jewish mystic Abraham Abulafia, the philosophies of Levinas, Derrida, and Benjamin, the practice of intellectual history, the cultural memory of the New Testament, and pedagogy. In response, Wyschogrod shows how her interlocutors have brought to light her multiple authorial personae and have thus marked the ambiguity of selfhood, its position at the nexus of being influenced by and influencing others.

Book The Useless Mouths and Other Literary Writings

Download or read book The Useless Mouths and Other Literary Writings written by Simone de Beauvoir and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2011-10-27 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Useless Mouths" and Other Literary Writings brings to English-language readers literary writings--several previously unknown--by Simone de Beauvoir. Culled from sources including various American university collections, the works span decades of Beauvoir's career. Ranging from dramatic works and literary theory to radio broadcasts, they collectively reveal fresh insights into Beauvoir's writing process, personal life, and the honing of her philosophy. The volume begins with a new translation of the 1945 play The Useless Mouths, written in Paris during the Nazi occupation. Other pieces were discovered after Beauvoir's death in 1986, such as the 1965 short novel "Misunderstanding in Moscow," involving an elderly French couple who confront their fears of aging. Two additional previously unknown texts include the fragmentary "Notes for a Novel," which contains the seed of what she later would call "the problem of the Other," and a lecture on postwar French theater titled Existentialist Theater. The collection notably includes the eagerly awaited translation of Beauvoir's contribution to a 1965 debate among Jean-Paul Sartre and other French writers and intellectuals, "What Can Literature Do?" Prefaces to well-known works such as Bluebeard and Other Fairy Tales,La Bâtarde, and James Joyce in Paris: His Final Years are also available in English for the first time, alongside essays and other short articles. A landmark contribution to Beauvoir studies and French literary studies, the volume includes informative and engaging introductory essays by prominent and rising scholars. Contributors are Meryl Altman, Elizabeth Fallaize, Alison S. Fell, Sarah Gendron, Dennis A. Gilbert, Laura Hengehold, Eleanore Holveck, Terry Keefe, J. Debbie Mann, Frederick M. Morrison, Catherine Naji, Justine Sarrot, Liz Stanley, Ursula Tidd, and Veronique Zaytzeff.
