Book The Wonder of the Cross

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard A. Shenk
  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2013-05-08
  • ISBN : 1610978692
  • Pages : 345 pages

Download or read book The Wonder of the Cross written by Richard A. Shenk and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-05-08 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When considering and confronting the problem of evil, we may be asking the wrong question: Why is there evil in the world if God is good and powerful? It may be wrong because it smuggles in an unbiblical premise: God can and should use his coercive power to relieve suffering since he is both good and able. But what if coercive power does not work to accomplish God's goals? This book is an investigation into the possibility that the noncoercive power of the Cross must be at the center of this issue, and that the Cross could reform this question. We could ask, instead, How is God destroying evil and suffering--and why is he taking so long? The answer to this reframed question might be: He is using evil and suffering to destroy evil and suffering for His People; this is how long it takes. While not a "solution" to the problem of evil, could this help us learn to delight in God in a world in which evil and suffering seem at times so relentless?

Book The Message in the Music

Download or read book The Message in the Music written by and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The definitive guide to the meaning of today’s most popular praise and worship songs. Few things influence Christians’ understanding of the faith more than the songs they sing in worship. The explosion of praise and worship music in the last fifteen years has profoundly affected our experience of God. So what are those songs telling us about who God is? In what ways have they made us more faithful disciples of Jesus Christ? In what ways have they failed to embody the full message of the gospel? Working with the lists of the most frequently sung praise and worship songs from recent years, the authors of this book offer an objective but supportive assessment of the meaning and contribution of the Christian music that has been so important in the lives of contemporary believers.

Book Becoming What We Sing

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Lemley
  • Publisher : Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing
  • Release : 2021-01-07
  • ISBN : 1467461636
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Becoming What We Sing written by David Lemley and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-07 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary worship music is ubiquitous in many Protestant Christian communities today. Rather than debating or decrying this post–worship-wars reality, David Lemley accepts it as a premise and examines what it means for us to be singing along with songs that aren’t so different from the pop genre. How do we cope with the consumerism embedded in the mentality that catchy is good? How do we stay committed to subverting cultural norms, as Christians are called to do, when our music is modeled after those cultural norms? How do we ensure that the way we participate in the liturgy of contemporary worship music rehearses a cruciform identity? Becoming What We Sing draws on cultural criticism, ethnomusicology, and liturgical and sacramental theology to process the deluge of the contemporary in today’s worship music. Lemley probes the thought of historical figures, such as Augustine, Hildegard of Bingen, Martin Luther, and the Wesleys, while also staying situated in the current moment by engaging with cultural philosophers such as James K. A. Smith and popular artists such as U2. The result is a thorough assessment of contemporary worship music’s cultural economy that will guide readers toward greater consciousness of who we are becoming as we sing “our way into selves, societies, and cosmic perspectives.”

Book Released

Download or read book Released written by Matthew McHenry and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was no longer controlled by the emptiness, anger, drugs, alcohol, pill abuse, and all my old worthless ways. The first year after I decided to become a Christian was difficult, confusing, and lonely. I steered away from my fake friends, went to church alone, and started my search for the truth by studying all religions. Empty... empty was a regular feeling I had felt haunted by since I was a young child feeling like I had no purpose in life. My journey began figuring out what religion is right and what exactly is in the Bible? Who is God? What is he all about? What am I going to have to do in order to go to Heaven and please God? The experience began as I discovered what the Bible said and what people who claimed to be Christians said were usually two different things. "You are just going to have to do something, Matt. You're not going to get a good job and you just need to take something for even minimum wage to have something." They also said statements of defeat where I wondered if I had the same Bible they read at all. I didn't believe the contradictions. I found ministries that took the Bible for what it said as they believed for better, lived better, and they talked with confidence. They took seriously the task of gaining wisdom to eat right, talk right, study, and to expect the promises of God to his followers. Released is for the unbelieving and those experiencing Christian confusion. Take my experiences and the setbacks I had to overcome to motivate your own life. God can forgive anything, and he is the only thing in this world that will never let you down, because they will. The acceptance of Jesus is the best decision we can ever make. I am living proof . . .
