I'll tell you about it sometime, but I can't now;" and Patty fell limply into her father's arms. "Never mind, darling, it's all right," said Mr. Fairfield, soothingly, as he kissed the pale brow, and carried Patty up the steps and into the house. He laid her on a couch, and, under Nan's gentle ministrations, she soon revived. Meantime, Henry Hampton was telling the tale as he had understood it. "Mighty slick piece of work!" he said. "Never saw anything like it in my life! That young fellow ought to have medals pinned all over him." "There, there, Mr. Hampton, that'll be about all," said Philip, trying to shut off the tide of compliments from the stranger. "No, 'taint about all!" declared Mr. Hampton, wagging his head, "but I guess the little lady can tell you the story, once she feels like herself again. I must be gettin' along now, but I just want to remark, edgewise, that I've seen lots of pluck and bravery in my day, but for hair-trigger intellect, coolheadedness, pluck, and plumb bravery, I never saw such an exhibition as this here chap put up to-day! Good afternoon, all;" and, with a wave of his hand, Mr. Hampton went away.

Book excerpt: "Different men are of different opinions; some like apples, some like inions," sang Patty, asshe swayed herself idly back and forth in the veranda swing; "but, truly-ooly, Nan," shewent on, "I don't care a snipjack. I'm quite ready and willing to go to the WhiteMountains, -or the Blue or Pink or even Lavender Mountains, if you like.""You're willing, Patty, only because you're so good-natured and unselfish; but, really, youdon't want to go one bit.""Now, Nan, I'm no poor, pale martyr, with a halo roundy-bout me noble brow. When wecame down here to Spring Beach, it was understood that we were to stay here part of thesummer, and then go to the mountains. And now it's the first of August and I've had myinnings, so it's only fair you should have your outing."Though Patty's air was gay and careless, and Patty's tones were sincere, she was in realitymaking an heroic self-sacrifice, and Nan knew it. Patty loved the seashore; she had beenthere three months, and loved it better every day.But Nan cared more for the mountains, and longed to get away from the sunny glare of thesea, and enjoy the shaded walks and drives of higher altitudes. However, these two were ofunselfish nature, and each wanted to please the other. But as Patty had had her wish forthree months, it was certainly fair that Nan should be humoured for the rest of the summer. The season had done wonders for Patty, physically. Because of her outdoor life, she hadgrown plumper and browner, her muscles had strengthened, and her rosy cheeksbetokened a perfect state of health. She was still slender, and her willowy figure had gainedsoft curves without losing its dainty gracefulness

Book excerpt: Carolyn Wells (1862-1942) was an American author and poet. She was born in Rahway, New Jersey. After finishing school she worked as a librarian for the Rahway Library Association. Her first book, At the Sign of the Sphinx (1896), was a collection of charades. Her next publications were The Jingle Book and The Story of Betty (1899), followed by a book of verse entitled Idle Idyls (1900). After 1900, Wells wrote numerous novels and collections of poetry. She wrote a total of more than 170 books. During the first ten years of her career, she concentrated on poetry, humor, and children's books. According to her autobiography, The Rest of My Life (1937), around 1910 she heard one of Anna Katherine Green's mystery novels being read aloud and was immediately captivated by the unravelling of the puzzle. From that point onward, she devoted herself to the mystery genre. Among her most famous works are: Patty at Home (1904), Marjorie's Busy Days (1906), The Gold Bag (1911), Marjorie's Maytime (1911), Marjorie at Seacote (1912), Patty Blossom (1917), Vicky Van (1918) and Patty and Azalea (1919).

Book Moth Butterfly Ta Da

Download or read book Moth Butterfly Ta Da written by Dev Petty and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-06-08 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metamorphosis brings astonishing and exciting changes to a pair of caterpillar friends, who take pride in being the same--and different. Two caterpillar friends love what they have in common--lots of legs and a talent for chewing leaves into funny shapes. And when it's time to build cocoons, they hang theirs side by side. "Happy metamorphosis," says an older, more knowledgeable butterfly. And it is a happy metamorphosis indeed--for when the two emerge from their cocoons, they can fly! But so much else has changed--as one is now a moth, who flies by night, and the other is a butterfly, who flies by day. How will things work now? Fortunately some things never change--like true friends figuring out a way to be together, and happily flying into the sunset and sunrise.
