Despite this scarcity, there remain numerous problems associated with the excessive and inappropriate use of phosphorus leading to non-point source pollution and eutrophication of natural waters. Identifying appropriate systems for managing soil phosphorus and reducing the risks of eutrophication are needed to minimize the environmental risks. This book focuses on the availability and recycling of phosphorus; regulatory and policy issues of sustainable phosphorus use; and water quality management in agroecosystems pertaining to phosphorus. Sections are dedicated to global phosphorus reserves; cycling and pathways of phosphorus; phosphorus in agriculture; human dimensions and policy intervention; and research and development priorities. Phosphorus is a finite but crucial resource and is an essential element to all life. Soil P is derived ultimately from rock weathering, thus pedogenesis strongly determines P stock, speciation and bioavailability. Phosphorus transformations during pedogenesis in humid ecosystems can be well described with the conceptual model proposed by Walker and Syers (1976). However, the application of the model in semi-arid ecosystems has been contentious. In addition to rock weathering, aeolian dust deposition is another important P input to soils, but its influence on P transformations during pedogenesis remains poorly understood. Moreover, sequential chemical extractions (SCEs) are used to quantify P pools in the model. However, these pools are operationally defined, thereby affecting the model accuracy. Organic P transformations during pedogenesis in humid ecosystems are relatively well known; however, the transformations in semi-arid ecosystems and whether and how vegetation affects the transformations during pedogenesis remain unclear. The objectives of this dissertation were to determine the impacts of aeolian dust input and vegetation on P transformations during semi-arid ecosystem development and to evaluate the accuracy of the SCEs and how it affects the use of SCEs for testing the Walker and Syers model. Soil samples were collected from two 3-million-year old semi-arid soil chronosequences located in Arizona (substrate age gradient of Arizona, SAGA) and California (Merced chronosequence) as well as dust samples were collected from the SAGA sites. Phosphorus K-edge X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy was used to directly characterize soil P speciation, and solution 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used for detailed characterization of P0 composition.Results showed that aeolian dust deposition strongly altered soil P speciation by increasing calcium-bound P (Ca-P) fraction and decreasing Fe/Al-bound P fraction in older soils of SAGA, resulting in a P transformation pattern inconsistent with the Walker and Syers model. The effects of aeolian dust deposition on soil P transformations are functions of the relative magnitude of the net dust flux and weathering intensity of the ecosystem. The perturbation of dust deposition on P transformations was previously concealed by SCEs. A further analysis of the P pools of the model showed that non-occluded P (P[subscript]n-occ) pool was often significantly under-estimated because of the newly formed Ca-P in the NaHCO3 extraction residues, which were subsequently extracted by diluted HCl (DHCl) extraction. Thereby, the Ca P pool was over-estimated. Dissolution of Fe/Al oxides by DHCl and release of the associated P is another important reason for the Ca-P over-estimation. The NMR analysis showed that the P0 in the SAGA soils mainly consisted of phosphate monoesters and diesters. Some of the major P0 species changed in contrasting ways under different vegetation (i.e., under pine and juniper canopy and inter-canopy grass) during pedogenesis. The difference of the P0 composition between under-canopy and inter-canopy soils at each substrate age decreased with increasing substrate age. The decline can be ascribed to increasing exploration of soil P by soil communities and plants, and organic P homogenization due to tree canopy movement at each site during pedogenesis. This dissertation highlights the advantages of P K-edge XANES spectroscopy over SCEs in characterizing soil P dynamics, and SCEs may provide misleading conclusions when testing the Walker and Syers model. The improved understanding of the SCEs has broad implications for studying P dynamics in natural and agricultural ecosystems. Overall, this work provides a foundation for understanding how dust and vegetation influences P cycling during ecosystem development.
