Book The Many Faces of Patriotism

Download or read book The Many Faces of Patriotism written by Philip Abbott and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades following the end of the Cold War, scholars turned their attention to reevaluating patriotism. Many saw both its ability to serve as a cohesive force and its desirability as a political and moral concept waning in a time of peace and globalization. The shock of September 11 shook this assessment, as it brought a new surge of patriotism to America. In this volume, nine authors debate the consequences of the 21st century's patriotic resurgence, examining it both in theoretical and comparative terms that draw on examples of patriotism from ancient Greece to post-apartheid South Africa. Each author has chosen a different angle of approach, examining a variety of interlinking questions. Should patriotism be defined to enhance universalistic concerns or is its particularistic vantage point the source of its virtue? Is patriotism a concept prone to manipulation by elites or is it a source of independent judgments by citizens? If patriotism is love of one's country, how is that love best expressed? Is such love demonstrated by fidelity, gratitude, compassion, remembrance, shame, dissent, or some combination? Joined together by Philip Abbott's incisive introduction, the essays illuminate the many-faceted nature of patriotism today. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Patriotism and Piety, Jonathan Den Hartog argues that the question of how religion would function in American society was decided in the decades after the Constitution and First Amendment established a legal framework. Den Hartog shows that among the wide array of politicians and public figures struggling to define religion’s place in the new nation, Federalists stood out—evolving religious attitudes were central to Federalism, and the encounter with Federalism strongly shaped American Christianity. Den Hartog describes the Federalist appropriations of religion as passing through three stages: a "republican" phase of easy cooperation inherited from the experience of the American Revolution; a "combative" phase, forged during the political battles of the 1790s–1800s, when the destiny of the republic was hotly contested; and a "voluntarist" phase that grew in importance after 1800. Faith became more individualistic and issue-oriented as a result of the actions of religious Federalists. Religious impulses fueled party activism and informed governance, but the redirection of religious energies into voluntary societies sapped party momentum, and religious differences led to intraparty splits. These developments altered not only the Federalist Party but also the practice and perception of religion in America, as Federalist insights helped to create voluntary, national organizations in which Americans could practice their faith in interdenominational settings. Patriotism and Pietyfocuses on the experiences and challenges confronted by a number of Federalists, from well-known leaders such as John Adams, John Jay, Charles Cotesworth Pinckney, and Timothy Dwight to lesser-known but still important figures such as Caleb Strong, Elias Boudinot, and William Jay.

Book The Dawn of a New Patriotism

Download or read book The Dawn of a New Patriotism written by John D. Hunt and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dawn of a New Patriotism: A Training Course in Citizenship Democracy requires that the people exercise supreme control over the government, Cabinet Ministers and Members of Parliament being simply agents of the people and at all times accountable to them. Universal suffrage requires that the average citizen be an active, instructed, intelligent ruler of his country. The success of democracy depends upon the education of the people along two principal lines, (1) political knowledge and (2) what is of far more importance, political morality, Despotism may govern without faith, but liberty cannot. The ultimate security for democracy lies in a community conscience, which recognizes that there is a law of right and wrong which is not man made, which is as independent of human wills as is the law of gravitation. When, through lack of political knowledge or political morality, citizens fail to realize their responsibilities, when they lose the inspiration that comes from faith in a "higher law," which neither legislatures nor courts can either justly or safely set aside, then the very foundation of political liberty is swept away and democracy becomes a mockery, while a plutocratic oligarchy grasps the reigns of power and the servants of the people become their masters. It is not the form of government that makes people free. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Patriotic Citizenship Great Western land, whose mighty breast Between two oceans finds its rest, Begirt by storms on either side, And washed by strong Pacific tide. The knowledge of thy wondrous birth Gave balance to the rounded earth; In sea of darkness thou didst stand, Now first in light, great Western land. In thee the olive and the vine Unite with hemlock and with pine; In purest white the southern rose Repeats the spotless northern snows. Around thy zone a belt of maize Rejoices in the sun's hot rays; And all that Nature could command She heaped on thee, great Western land. Great Western land, whose touch makes free, Advance to perfect liberty, Till right shall make thy sov'reign might, And every wrong be crushed from sight. Behold thy day, thy time is here; Thy people great, with naught to fear. God hold thee in His strong right hand, My well beloved Western land. - Caroline Hazard About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
