Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of American Patriotism Who now shall sneer? Who dare again to say we trace Our lines to a plebeian race? Roundhead and Cavalier! Dumb are those names, erewhile in battle loud; Dream-footed, as the shadow of a cloud, They flit across the ear; That is best blood that hath most iron in 't To edge resolve with, pouring without stint For what makes manhood dear. Tell us not of Plantagenets, Hapsburgs, and Guelphs, whose thin bloods crawl Down from some victor in a border brawl! How poor their outworn coronets, Matched with one leaf of that plain civic wreath Our brave for honor's blazon shall bequeath, Through whose desert a rescued Nation sets Her heel on treason, and the trumpet hears Shout victory, tingling Europe's sullen ears With vain resentments and more vain regrets! Book Poems of American Patriotism

Download or read book Poems of American Patriotism written by R. L. Paget and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poems of American Patriotism: 1776-1898 Several collections of patriotic verse have been made, but none hitherto, so far as I know, which carries one later than the Civil War. The present compilation makes pretensions neither to complete ness, - a large volume would fail to include every thing of merit which has been inspired by national themes, nor, on the other hand, to a fastidious criti cal standard. Its only aim is that of presenting anew the noble and popular songs of the past, long en deared to the country's heart, and a still larger amount of stirring contemporary verse, not a little of which has already begun to sing itself into the memory of our time. Book William Blake Selected Poems

Download or read book William Blake Selected Poems written by William Blake and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-25 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'To see a World in a Grain of Sand 'And a Heaven in a Wild Flower Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand And Eternity in an hour' William Blake wrote some of the most moving and memorable verse in the English language. Deeply committed to visionary and imaginative experience, yet also fiercely engaged with the turbulent politics of his era, he is now recognised as a major contributor to the Romantic Movement. This edition presents Blake's poems in their literary categories and genres to which they belong: his much-loved lyrics, ballads, comic and satirical verse, descriptive and discursive poems, verse epistles, and, finally, his remarkable 'prophetic' poems, including the whole of his two diffuse epics, Milton and Jerusalem. Blake's poetry is intellectually challenging as well as formally inventive, and this edition has a substantial critical introduction which places his ideas in the contemporary context of the Enlightenment and the artistic reaction against its key assumptions.
