This book was released on 2022-09-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION AND REVIEW Domestic violence in this study entails physical, emotional, sexual, and financial abuse suffered by women as young daughters-in-law inflicted by both their husbands and in-laws. In societies governed by patriarchal structures, where men as a group dominate women as a group, such violence is not limited to a husband abusing his wife, but it is a manifestation of the complex interplay between both gender and generational hierarchies. The multitudinal forms of domestic violence and its effect on the victim have been the subject matter of variegated theoretical discourses. A detailed understanding of various components of domestic violence and the impact of a collectivist and an agrarian society such as Punjab, on the nuances of domestic violence is the subject matter of the introduction and review of this research. Domestic violence in the form of coercive controlling violence (Kelly & Johnson, 2008) can have severe emotional and physical consequences for the women who have been the victims. In some cases it may lead to the development of Battered Women Syndrome. Studies have also suggested cyclicity in the nature of violence. Coercive control to which women are subjected to, the cyclic nature of violence, its consequences, and the lack of recourses available to them further entraps the women in abusive relationships. The inter-relationship among these factors also determines the choice of strategies employed by the women to cope with the situation. Choice of coping strategies in turn influences the battered women's mental health and wellbeing. 1.1. Violence against women Domestic violence in gendered societies stems from the general subjugation of women as a group. It is committed to target that particular group in order to suppress them, and the problem has become endemic affecting half of the human race in some form or the other. Beating, coerced sex, and other physical or psychological abuse can be some of the forms of violence. At least every third woman in the world has been subjected to such abuse by people known to them (UNIFEM, 2006). Violence against,

Book Battered Woman Syndrome as a Legal Defense

Download or read book Battered Woman Syndrome as a Legal Defense written by Brenda L. Russell and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of the battered woman syndrome defense in the courts is controversial, particularly when women turn to homicide in response to a partner's abuse. Scholars worry that the syndrome has created a standard to which all battered women are compared. This book provides a comprehensive examination of the evolution of the syndrome, its effectiveness in court, and the contributions made by psychologists and legal scholars to aid our understanding of the use of battered woman syndrome evidence in trials of abused women who kill. Of particular interest is the influence of history, gender roles, and stereotypes in the evaluation of defendants who claim to suffer from the syndrome.

Book Battered Women as Survivors

Download or read book Battered Women as Survivors written by Lee Ann Hoff and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1990, this book is based on a field study of domestic abuse victims and their social network members. In a life history perspective, using values and network analysis, it uncovers the social context of a ‘secret’ crime against women and reveals the relationship between personal crisis and traditional attitudes toward women, marriage, the family, and violence. This book breaks new ground by redirecting attention beyond victim-blaming and the medicalization of violence to understanding domestic abuse victims as survivors who manage multiple crises despite public inattention to their plight. From analysis of the women’s struggles with violence and its aftermath, this book proposes a new crisis paradigm, which underscores the sociocultural aspects of crisis originating from violence. This book will be of interest to those studying social sciences, women’s studies, social work, health and mental health professions.

Download or read book Feminist Engagement with the Law written by Elizabeth Comack and published by Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women = Institut canadien de recherches sur les femmes. This book was released on 1993 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph analyzes the decision by the Supreme Court of Canada in Lavallee [R. v. Lavallee (1990)] to recognize the Battered Woman Syndrome as relevant in cases involving women defendants who kill their abusive partners. The author suggests that, while there is much in the decision which would lead feminists to consider 'Lavalee' to be a benefit, the decision also legitimates the power of the 'psy' professions to interpret an abused woman's experiences. Accordingly, the Battered Woman Syndrome is criticized as offering an account which individualizes, medicalizes and depoliticizes the abuse. The discussion concludes with a consideration of the implications of the recognition for feminists.

Book Finding Their Voices

Download or read book Finding Their Voices written by Amy Lou Busch and published by Nova Kroshka Books. This book was released on 1999 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The few studies that exist on battered women who have killed focus on what psychologists, attorneys, and academics have to say about their conduct. To date, there has been no study of how the women perceive themselves and their actions, and how they feel about the labels that have been applied to them. The voices of women who have killed their abusers must be brought into this debate. The life stories of these women can inform the theory used to describe them, illuminating disjunctions between the battered woman syndrome and their own explanations for their actions.
