The issues raised in this book are germane to anyone who is concerned with the problems that beset those see king treatment for mental or substance abuse disorders. We address the foUowing types of issues: (1) the history of health policy in the United States; (2) the history of our mental health policy as a eomponent of our health poliey; (3) the effeets of ehanges in payment policies; (4) mental disorders among special populations (children, the elderly, the disabled); (5) the cost of treatment; (6) changes in labeling of diagnosis; (7) the effectiveness of treatment; and (8) evolving public policy issues.

Book Better But Not Well

Download or read book Better But Not Well written by Richard G. Frank and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the well-being of people with mental illness in the United States over the past fifty years, addressing issues such as economics, treatment, standards of living, rights, and stigma. Marshaling a range of new empirical evidence, they first argue that people with mental illness--severe and persistent disorders as well as less serious mental health conditions--are faring better today than in the past. Improvements have come about for unheralded and unexpected reasons. Rather than being a result of more effective mental health treatments, progress has come from the growth of private health insurance and of mainstream social programs--such as Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income, housing vouchers, and food stamps--and the development of new treatments that are easier for patients to tolerate and for physicians to manage.

Book Medium Secure Psychiatric Provision in the Private Sector

Download or read book Medium Secure Psychiatric Provision in the Private Sector written by Katrina R Moss and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-21 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1998, this volume assesses issues of privatisation and mental health provision in the Medium Secure Psychiatric Care sector, including case studies on two regional secure units and Stockton Hall Psychiatric Hospital between 1989 and 1992. It emerged at the end of a period of Conservative Party dominance of almost two decades in which privatisation had been at the forefront of discussion and focused on the midpoint of that era. Despite this, privatisation of psychiatric care had received little discussion. Here, Katrina R. Moss discusses the role of private medical care in the UK healthcare landscape with focus on the meaning of privatisation, attitudes towards privatising the criminal justice system along with relevant legal and medical issues related to regulation by the Mental Health Act 1983.

Book The Psychiatric Hospital and the Family

Download or read book The Psychiatric Hospital and the Family written by H.T. Harbin and published by Springer. This book was released on 1982-07-31 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1977 there were an estimated 1,846,090 patient care episodes in psychiatric hospitals across the United States. The number of patient care episodes in inpatient facilities continues to increase from that measured in 1955 despite the national emphasis on "deinstitutionalization." Yet the nature and focus of psychiatric hospitals, both public and private, have changed dramatically in the past fifty years. No longer are all mentally ill patients placed in distant hospitals that encourage separation from family and community. Many hospitals now work to include the patient's natural support system, and families are increasingly vocal about their right to stay involved with their hospitalized family member. As hospital stays have become briefer, the need to incorporate the family in the treatment process has been recognized. We are witnessing the development of new roles for families with the psychiatric hospital and novel treatment strategies offered by inpatient staff to families. These exciting changes have led to an alteration in the attitudes of mental health professionals as well as an expansion of our knowledge and skills regarding the family of the hospitalized psychiatric patient. This book brings together the works of many of those professionals who have developed innovative and pragmatic clinical and research strategies for these families.
