Book Paving Our Ways

Download or read book Paving Our Ways written by Maxwell Lay and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-11-22 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paving Our Ways covers the international history of road paving in an interesting, readable and technically accurate way. It provides an overview of the associated technologies in a historical context. It examines the earliest pavements in Egypt and Mesopotamia and then moves to North Africa, Crete, Greece and Italy, before a review of pavements used by the Romans in their magnificent road system. After its empire collapsed, Roman pavements fell into ruin. The slow recovery of pavements in Europe began in France and then in England. The work of Trésaguet, Telford and McAdam is examined. Asphalt and concrete slowly improved as paving materials in the second part of the 19th century. Major advances occurred in the 20th century with the availability of powerful machinery, pneumatic tyres and bitumen. The advances needed to bring pavements to their current development are explored, as are the tools for financing, constructing, managing and maintaining pavements. The book should appeal to those interested in road paving, and in the history of engineering and transport. It can also serve as a text for courses in engineering history.

Book Macrotexture Assessment of Florida Pavements

Download or read book Macrotexture Assessment of Florida Pavements written by Alexander C. Oracheff and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When water has nowhere to escape from the surface of a roadway, it can disrupt the tire-to-pavement adhesion of a traveling vehicle and lead to hydroplaning. Pavement macrotexture provides the pathways for water to drain, which allows for the necessary grip between tire and pavement. Macrotexture, which is quantified by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) in terms of mean profile depth (MPD), is analyzed by the State Materials Office using a high-speed point-laser mounted along the driver side wheel path of a friction testing vehicle. While point-lasers are capable of accurately measuring MPD on flexible pavement, the system fails to capture the anisotropic texturing of rigid pavement, such as longitudinally-ground (LGD) concrete. A prospective solution to this issue was to utilize a vehicle-mounted line-laser that collects texture data in a three-dimensional (3D) manner, as opposed to the two-dimensional (2D) collection of a point-laser. The three dimensions in which the line-laser collects texture data are transversely along the length of the laser spectrum, longitudinally in the direction of vehicle travel, and vertically as height measurements. As a result, the focus of this study was to develop and execute a research-based approach in configuring an LMI Technologies line-laser system to accurately assess pavement macrotexture on a network level. This objective was successfully completed by configuring and optimizing the line-laser collection parameters through a series of static and dynamic tests on roadways throughout Florida. Currently, the line-laser system produces MPD values that are highly correlated with accepted reference values on both flexible and rigid pavement in a repeatable and reproducible manner. Utilizing the updated line-laser system will allow the FDOT to accurately assess the macrotexture of Florida's longitudinally-ground concrete roadways at highway speeds, which was previously completed with maintenance of traffic as a static test.

  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 4 pages

Download or read book Project U Turn written by Philadelphia Youth Network and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, more than 8,200 young Philadelphians drop out of school. The first step to a solution, taken in 2005, was the gathering and examination of data to truly understand the dimensions of the problem and the characteristics of struggling students and out-of-school Philadelphia youth. These studies, conducted by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and the Johns Hopkins University, were summarized in a groundbreaking report, "Unfulfilled Promise: The Dimensions and Characteristics of Philadelphia's Dropout Crisis" and the companion report of policy recommendations, "Turning it Around." Based on these analyses, in October 2006 the Collaborative launched Project U-Turn, a citywide campaign to elevate the visibility of Philadelphia's dropout crisis, and take steps to resolve it. During its three and a half years of existence, the Collaborative has steadily increased the number of committed partners, and has been successful in influencing policy and funding. In 2006, the School District adopted several Collaborative recommendations, including: (1) creating new accelerated high schools; (2) placing dropout prevention specialists in seven high dropout high schools; and (3) building a consensus to align the policy for parenting students with state timelines for child care availability. Additionally, new educational opportunities are being offered for struggling students and out-of-school youth. (Contains 1 figure and 4 footnotes.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woven throughout with rich details of everyday life, this original, on-the-ground study of poor neighborhoods challenges much prevailing wisdom about urban poverty, shedding new light on the people, institutions, and culture in these communities. Over the course of nearly a decade, Martín Sánchez-Jankowski immersed himself in life in neighborhoods in New York and Los Angeles to investigate how social change and social preservation transpire among the urban poor. Looking at five community mainstays—the housing project, the small grocery store, the barbershop and the beauty salon, the gang, and the local high school—he discovered how these institutions provide a sense of order, continuity, and stability in places often thought to be chaotic, disorganized, and disheartened. His provocative and ground-breaking study provides new data on urban poverty and also advances a new theory of how poor neighborhoods function, illuminating the creativity and resilience that characterize the lives of those who experience the hardships associated with economic deprivation.

Book Methane Biocatalysis Paving the Way to Sustainability

Download or read book Methane Biocatalysis Paving the Way to Sustainability written by Marina G. Kalyuzhnaya and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-20 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides in-depth insights into the most recent developments in different areas of microbial methane and methanol utilization, including novel fundamental discoveries in genomics and physiology, innovative strategies for metabolic engineering and new synthetic approaches for generation of feedstocks, chemicals and fuels from methane, and finally economics and the implementation of industrial biocatalysis using methane consuming bacteria. Methane, as natural gas or biogas, penetrates every area of human activity, from households to large industries and is often promoted as the cleanest fuel. However, one should not forget that this bundle of energy, carbon, and hydrogen comes with an exceptionally large environmental footprint. To meet goals of long-term sustainability and human well-being, all areas of energy, chemicals, agriculture, waste-management industries must go beyond short-term economic considerations and target both large and small methane emissions. The search for new environment-friendly approaches for methane capture and valorization is an ongoing journey. While it is not yet apparent which innovation might represent the best solution, it is evident that methane biocatalysis is one of the most promising paths. Microbes are gatekeepers of fugitive methane in Nature. Methane-consuming microbes are typically small in number but exceptionally big in their impact on the natural carbon cycle. They control and often completely eliminate methane emission from a variety of biological and geothermal sources. The tremendous potential of these microbial systems, is only now being implemented in human-made systems. The book addresses professors, researchers and graduate students from both academia and industry working in microbial biotechnology, molecular biology and chemical engineering.
