As the text is devoted entirely to CRC screening, it features many facts, principles, guidelines and figures related to screening in an easy access format. This volume provides a complete guide to colorectal cancer screening which will be informative to the subspecialist as well as the primary care practitioner. It represents the only text that provides this up to date information about a subject that is continually changing. For the primary practitioner, information on the guidelines for screening as well as increasing patient participation is presentedd. For the subspecialist, information regarding the latest imaging techniques as well as flat adenomas and chromoendoscopy are covered. The section on the molecular changes in CRC will appeal to both groups. The text includes up to date information about colorectal screening that encompasses the entire spectrum of the topic and features photographs of polyps as well as diagrams of the morphology of polyps as well as photographs of CT colonography images. Algorithms are presented for all the suggested guidelines. Chapters are devoted to patient participation in screening and risk factors as well as new imaging technology. Book Pathology of Chronic Constipation in Pediatric and Adult Coloproctology

Download or read book Pathology of Chronic Constipation in Pediatric and Adult Coloproctology written by William A. Meier-Ruge and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to motility disorders of the gut and their diagnosis, a field which can be frustrating when classical histological staining techniques are used. The use of enzyme histochemical techniques, however, provides important information on functional abnormalities of colon motility, which is demonstrated here in more than two hundred photomicrographs. The individual chapters are divided into three sections: the first outlines and illustrates pathological aspects of a particular disorder, the second provides diagnostic criteria, and the third discusses clinical pathology. In a final chapter the methodology of enzyme histochemistry is described. Drawing from 40 years of experience in the diagnosis of biopsies from the mucosa of the rectosigmoid and laparoscopic biopsies of muscularis propria from different gut areas, the authors have compiled a clearly organized and didactic volume, which will be highly useful to practicing pathologists, technicians and trainees in pathology. It will also be of great benefit to gastroenterologists, pediatricians, and coloproctological and pediatric surgeons in helping them interpret histopathological findings in the gastrointestinal tract.

Book excerpt: Tutorials in Postgraduate Medicine: Diseases of the Colon, Rectum, and Anus focuses on the diseases of the rectum, colon, and anus, including diagnosis, diseases in children, and cancer. The selection first offers information on the anatomy of the colon, rectum, and anal canal and physiology. Topics include movements of the colon, description of the movements, colonic mucosa, normal bowel habit, subepithelial tissue of the canal, internal anal sphincter, peritoneal relations, lining of the canal, and anal intramuscular glands. The book then examines clinical diagnosis and use of instruments, including pain, swelling, prolapse, discharge, irritation, abdominal pain, palpation, and biopsy. The manuscript elaborates on radiology and developmental anomalies and diseases in children. Discussions focus on factors hindering defecation in infancy and childhood, loss of blood from the anus, duplications of the distal gut, ano-rectal anomalies, acute toxic dilatation, geometrical features of benign polyps, and gontra-indications. The text then ponders on irritable colon syndrome, polyps and polyposis, cancer of the colon and rectum, colostomy, and ileostomy. The selection is a dependable reference for postgraduates and senior registrars wanting to conduct extensive research on the diseases of the colon, rectum, and anus.

Book Colonic Motility

  • Publisher : Biota Publishing
  • Release : 2010-11-01
  • ISBN : 1615041516

Download or read book Colonic Motility written by Sushil K. Sarna and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three distinct types of contractions perform colonic motility functions. Rhythmic phasic contractions (RPCs) cause slow net distal propulsion with extensive mixing/turning over. Infrequently occurring giant migrating contractions (GMCs) produce mass movements. Tonic contractions aid RPCs in their motor function. The spatiotemporal patterns of these contractions differ markedly. The amplitude and distance of propagation of a GMC are several-fold larger than those of an RPC. The enteric neurons and smooth muscle cells are the core regulators of all three types of contractions. The regulation of contractions by these mechanisms is modifiable by extrinsic factors: CNS, autonomic neurons, hormones, inflammatory mediators, and stress mediators. Only the GMCs produce descending inhibition, which accommodates the large bolus being propelled without increasing muscle tone. The strong compression of the colon wall generates afferent signals that are below nociceptive threshold in healthy subjects. However, these signals become nociceptive; if the amplitudes of GMCs increase, afferent nerves become hypersensitive, or descending inhibition is impaired. The GMCs also provide the force for rapid propulsion of feces and descending inhibition to relax the internal anal sphincter during defecation. The dysregulation of GMCs is a major factor in colonic motility disorders: irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), and diverticular disease (DD). Frequent mass movements by GMCs cause diarrhea in diarrhea predominant IBS, IBD, and DD, while a decrease in the frequency of GMCs causes constipation. The GMCs generate the afferent signals for intermittent short-lived episodes of abdominal cramping in these disorders. Epigenetic dysregulation due to adverse events in early life is one of the major factors in generating the symptoms of IBS in adulthood.
