Book Pathology of Laboratory Swine

Download or read book Pathology of Laboratory Swine written by Kris Helke and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2023-06-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pathology of Laboratory Swine is a comprehensive text describing the spontaneous pathology seen in the common laboratory pig strains. This is the first book collating information on all organ systems in these strains. Pigs are now used in greater numbers in contract research organizations as well as in the pharmaceutical industry. They provide significant advantages over dogs due to their greater tolerance of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, antihypertensive agents and sympathicomimetic drugs. Pigs are easier to house, handle, dose and sample than non-human primates and there are no zoonoses (in contrast to non-human primates). There are fewer ethical or conservation concerns, sexually mature animals are readily available and global transportation of pigs is easier. Pathology of Laboratory Swine serves as a "go to” text for all pathologists working on laboratory pigs in safety assessment studies, and to help diagnostic veterinary pathologists rule out spontaneous non-clinical disease pathology when assigning cause of death to these animals which are also kept as domestic pets.

Book Understanding and Combatting African Swine Fever

Download or read book Understanding and Combatting African Swine Fever written by Laura Iacolina and published by . This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent introduction and spread of African swine fever (ASF) into Europe and Asia has shown that an integrated, multidisciplinary effort is needed to tackle this disease and the complex challenges it poses. This book presents practical guidelines on surveillance for detection of ASF virus, how to prevent outbreaks in the domestic pig sector through biosecurity and cleaning and disinfection routines, including in backyard holdings, and how to control and eradicate this disease in wild boar. Information on pathological lesions and diagnostic practices are provided to support practitioners. Virus infection mechanisms and the consequent host immune response are reported together with an overview on the status of vaccine and treatment development. Information on ASF epidemiology and the European wild boar and domestic pig populations is presented to assist breeders, wildlife managers and policy makers in designing practices aimed at preventing, or controlling and eradicating, this disease. The book provides currently available knowledge in a single place, and identifies knowledge gaps, prompting policy makers and funding bodies to support the scientific community in investigating the gaps.
