Book Public Witness

    Book Details:
  • Author : Camilla J. Kari
  • Publisher : Liturgical Press
  • Release : 2004
  • ISBN : 9780814658338
  • Pages : 228 pages

Download or read book Public Witness written by Camilla J. Kari and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1792 the Catholic bishops of the United States began issuing joint pastoral letters at periodic intervals, intending the letters to be missives directed to validating patriotism and gathering the support of the faithful. Today the U.S. bishops continue to issue such letters, which, along with the letters that preceded them, explain the historic conditions confronting American Catholics. Public Witness: The Pastoral Letters of the American Catholic Bishops allows readers to learn of the highlights and obscure portions of the letters without reading through several volumes of Victorian prose. While viewing the letters as a stable genre that evolves to accommodate change in form and purpose, Kari provides historical background, a summary, and a rhetorical analysis of the pastoral letters. The origin of the practice, the production of the letters, and the reception of the letters by the public and press are explained. Well-documented and accessible, Public Witness is suited for the scholar and the general audience. Chapters are: "Frontiers and Foreigners: 1792-1884," "The Twentieth Century: 1919-1980," "The Challenge of Peace," "Economic Justice for All," "The Pastoral That Wasn't," and "Contributions to Public Discourse."

Download or read book Imitating Jesus written by Richard A. Burridge and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2007-10-22 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to many studies of New Testament ethics, which treat the New Testament in general and Paul in particular, this book focuses on the person of Jesus himself. Richard Burridge maintains that imitating Jesus means following both his words -- which are very demanding ethical teachings -- and his deeds and example of being inclusive and accepting of everyone. Burridge carefully and systematically traces that combination of rigorous ethical instruction and inclusive community through the letters of Paul and the four Gospels, treating specific ethical issues pertaining to each part of Scripture. The book culminates with a chapter on apartheid as an ethical challenge to reading the New Testament; using South Africa as a contemporary case study enables Burridge to highlight and further apply his previous discussion and conclusions.

Book Teaching in Black and White

Download or read book Teaching in Black and White written by Barbara E. Mattick and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2022-12-13 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching in Black and White: The Sisters of St. Joseph in the American South discusses the work of the Sisters of St. Joseph of (the city of) St. Augustine, who came to Florida from France in 1866 to teach newly freed blacks after the Civil War, and remain to this day. It also tells the story of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Georgia, who sprang from the motherhouse in St. Augustine. A significant part of the book is a comparison of the Sisters of St. Josephs' work against that of their major rivals, missionaries from the Protestant American Missionary Association. Using letters the Sisters wrote back to their motherhouse in France, the book provides rare glimpses into the personal and professional (pun intended) lives of these women religious in St. Augustine and other parts of Florida and Georgia, from the mid-nineteenth century through the era of anti-Catholicism in the early twentieth century South. It carries the story through 1922, the end of the pioneer years of the Sisters of St. Josephs' work in Florida, and the end of Sisters of St. Joseph of Georgia's existence as a distinct order. Through the lenses of Catholicism, Florida and Southern history, gender, and race, the book addresses the Protestant concept of domesticity and how it was reinforced in Catholic terms by women who seemingly defied the ideal. It also relates the Sisters' contributions in shaping life in the South during Reconstruction as they established elite academies and free schools, created orphanages, ministered to all during severe yellow fever epidemics, and fought the specter of anti-Catholicism as it crept across the rural regions of the country. To date, little has been written about Catholics in the South, much less the women religious who served there. This book helps to fill that gap. Teaching in Black and White provides rare glimpses into the personal and professional lives of women religious in Florida and Georgia, from the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth-century.
