Book excerpt: This is the story of the Canadian priest Fr. Normandin, who fought for the traditional Latin Mass in Canada during the years closely following Vatican II. His narration is invaluable as it stands, to this day, as an undismissable historical testimony. His eye-witness account of what life was like for a priest in the 1970's attempting to remain faithful to Eternal Rome and the Mass of All Time is a reminder to us all what it was actually like in the time immediately following Vatican II.What we enjoy today in the preservation of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is due to the heroic efforts of those unwavering fighters who came before us. We owe them a great debt and should be inspired by what they did and what they were able to achieve. Fr. Normandin's is interesting to all those who value the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass because he explains how we, the next generation of Catholics, almost lost it."To remain silent, or to withdraw into solitude would be to misunderstand their mission and, for want of courage, to shun their sacred duty. But in the event of grave canonical penalties being incurred for refusing to obey unlawful authority, such penalties, resulting from loyalty to the Traditional Roman Mass, would without question be null and void. It follows that priests are bound to ignore such sanctions, and continue with even greater courage the good fight for the faith."---Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, 1975 Preface, Priest out in the Cold

Book excerpt: The Pastor follows two brothers growing up in Kentucky right before World War II, who go through a spiritual awakening that will affect the rest of their lives. The youngest brother, Elmer, is blessed by God with the spirit of faith healing. His family suffers a tragedy with the death of their patriarch. During this terrible time, the town’s dynamic new pastor arrives. It is then that Elmer’s gift of healing is unlocked. Pastor Hurst takes Elmer with him on spiritual missions and the two become a formidable team of healers. When Pearl Harbor breaks out, the eldest brother, Josiah, heeds a calling to join the war effort. He becomes a fighter pilot in England shortly after the Battle of Britain. Elmer stays behind to continue his work with Pastor Hurst. Josiah’s plane is shot down. He is captured and interred at a German prison camp in eastern Prussia. Elmer also wants to go to war and argues with the pastor, who wants him to stay home and continue God’s work. Elmer departs for boot camp and becomes a door gunner on a B-17. But he too is shot down and ends up at the same prison camp as his brother. The camp commandant’s senior guard, known as the “Mad German,” learns of Elmer’s healing powers and pleads for help to heal his son, who has polio. Elmer agrees and uses what little strength he has. The two brothers match their faith and strength of will against all the odds facing them. Will their faith in God be enough to survive?

Download or read book The Hidden World of the Pastor written by Kenneth L. Swetland and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2007-01-08 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no question that pastors are under great stress today. Difficulties tear at the heart of the pastor but are often hidden from the view of the congregation. Kenneth Swetland presents a compelling look at this hidden world through true stories from pastors of different ages and from different parts of the country, various denominations, and diverse backgrounds. Meet Pete, Dirk, Norm, Ted, and others who face such problems as depression, sexual sin, family concerns, friction in staff relationships, gender and leadership conflicts, debt, and divorce. The thirteen case studies can be read alone or used by groups of pastors and/or students for discussion. Reading and discussing the case studies will give insight into the pastor's own problems. Having worked through their own concerns, they will be better equipped to minister to others. Laypeople would also benefit from reading the cases to gain deeper understanding of the world of pastoring and to learn when to offer support and counsel to their own pastors. 'The Hidden World of the Pastor' includes bibliographic entries as well as an appendix on how to teach a case study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Elizabeth von Arnim’s humourous novel, "The Pastor's Wife", the main character Ingeborg Bullivant goes on a spontaneous trip to Lucerne and returns engaged to a Prussian pastor. However, her new life as a wife is restrictive, and when the dashing artist Ingram comes into her life and indulges her with musings about Italy, wanderlust temps Ingeborg for a second time. This warm and witty novel is based on von Arnim’s own first marriage and will be enjoyed by fans of ‘Eat, Pray, Love’. Elizabeth von Arnim was an English novelist – a cousin of the New Zealand-born writer Katherine Mansfield – born as Mary Annette Beauchamp in Australia in 1866. She married a German aristocrat and her earliest written works are set in Germany. Von Arnim launched her career as a writer with her satirical and semi-autobiographical work ‘Elizabeth and Her German Garden’, published anonymously in 1898. Although she was known by the name May in her early life, when she began writing, her success as ‘Elizabeth’ meant that her writings were ascribed to the name Elizabeth von Arnim.

Book The Pastor of New Mexico

Download or read book The Pastor of New Mexico written by and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2015-05-10 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are few foreign original voices talking about early twentieth century Northern New Mexico. Father Peter Küppers who immigrated from Germany to New Mexico is one of those few voices. Father Küppers was born in 1885, came to New Mexico in 1911 and aside from a few short trips to Colorado and the mid-West, remained in New Mexico all his life. Rather limited in his knowledge of American culture when he arrived on this continent—after all, he once got mad that folks in New York did not speak German—Küppers grew to love New Mexico. Always biased and fierce in his protection of Northern New Mexicans, particularly his often poor Catholic parishioners, he became a cultural agent for Hispanics and Anglos and a chronicler of rural small town life. In his sometimes jolly account from the early 20th century, Küppers discusses growing up in Germany, describes personal experiences in the United States, and particularly in New Mexico, where he had to adapt to rural life, interact with town folks, parishioners, and Penitentes, and his adjustment to cultural surroundings so very different from his homeland in Germany.
