Book excerpt: When both his mate and his father died in a freak accident, Jason, the oldest Leonidas brother left home and became a park ranger in the Florida Panhandle. The distance and solitude suit him. After all, the less he cares, the less he hurts. With a hurricane bearing down on the coast, his job is to secure and evacuate the park. As the storm worsens to a point where evacuation is no longer possible, he discovers Celeste Lykaios injured and unconscious. The problem is…his mate died over a year ago. Celeste’s world has turned upside down. After being gravely injured in a plane crash, Jason abandoned her. In a mere twenty-four hours she finds out her werewolf step-father lost her birth father’s land, her family hid her survival from Jason, and her new fiancé is a killer. She goes to the only person she is certain can keep her safe, driving straight into a hurricane only to be attacked before she finds him. She wakes up in Jason’s home with no idea how she got there or why. They take shelter from the storm to unravel the betrayal that split them apart, but first have to face the danger stalking Celeste. When the storm passes, one question remains. If his mate–a human–survived the airplane crash that was supposed to have taken her life and the life of his father…what happened to the stronger wereleopard leader?

Book excerpt: FREEDOM Kareena Smith, leader of the unregistered telepaths of Earth, waged a secret war against the Tel Group and her government as long as she could remember. Until Tel captured her, her second in command, and one of their own, a defector. After months of captivity and several failed escape attempts, the three women are rescued by a group of Delroi warriors. There’s a price on her head and nothing left for her at home. Delroi offers sanctuary she can’t refuse. As soon as she’s rescued, she’s pursued relentlessly by sexy clan chief, Roarr Idis. She might find the kind of ecstasy in his arms she’s only dreamed of, but he wants the one thing she will never give up. Her freedom. IRRESISTIBLE After six months captivity, Parker Reed is thrilled to be free and offered asylum on Delroi, joining her fellow prisoners Kareena and Zola. It’s not long before she realizes that could have been a huge mistake. She’s a woman used to being in control and she devoted her life to one purpose: bringing down the corrupt. That identity is gone now but she hasn’t changed. She doesn’t play, goof off, or involve herself with men who think they should be the center of her life. Kaje Stian is a constant presence, however. He’s the exact opposite of the kind of men Parker usually dates, and he’s determined to have her. What’s a girl to do? He’s overbearing, demanding, and ultimately, irresistible. REDEMPTION Zola Gray is a woman on a mission. After escaping a year’s imprisonment, she was grateful to take asylum on Delroi and recover from her long captivity. But she isn’t like the company she suddenly finds herself in. She was a willing member of the Tel Group until one assassination too many made her rebel. Now Tel is coming after her and her friends, and she’ll do whatever it takes to end them once and for all. Jarek Idis was born, raised, and trained a warrior. Then he followed his true passion, healing. He knows Zola wants to confront the assassins coming after her in a misguided attempt at redemption, but he has other ideas. He’s supposed to be healing her body, but he’s going straight for her heart and soul. He sees what’s hidden under her bad ass veneer and he intends to keep the woman he knows she truly is. ABSOLUTION Anna Leigh Gray set out to save her daughter. While her former allies, the evil and malicious Tel Group has been dealt a major blow, they haven’t been destroyed and their sights are focused on one thing. Killing her daughter. To protect her Anna Leigh has to get to Delroi. The last thing she expects is being claimed by the dangerous, sexy Xan Bana. His telepathy is as strong as hers, his mind is fascinating, and he has moves in the bedroom she’d never been aware she missing. But he’s an enigmatic warrior and she’s not convinced his motives are pure. Xan Bana never expected to find a mate or take over leadership of his clan. Both are a challenge he’s looking forward to. Dealing with a clan that is in disarray is easier than getting to know the woman who now stands at his side, however. But when they arrive on Delroi, they help Zola all they can but when a ghost from the past almost kills her, his primitive dominant instincts threaten the fragile bond he’s forging with his mate. Now he’s in a race against time to keep his mate, protect her daughter, and save the son she’d thought lost long ago.

Book Recalling the Caliphate

Download or read book Recalling the Caliphate written by S. Sayyid and published by Hurst Publishers. This book was released on 2022-06-13 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As late as the last quarter of the twentieth century, there were expectations that Islam’s political and cultural influence would dissipate as the advance of westernization brought modernisation and secularisation in its wake. Not only has Islam failed to follow the trajectory pursued by variants of Christianity, namely confinement to the private sphere and depoliticisation, but it has also forcefully re-asserted itself as mobilisations in its name challenge the global order in a series of geopolitical, cultural and philosophical struggles. The continuing (if not growing) relevance of Islam suggests that global history cannot simply be presented as a scaled up version of that of the West. Quests for Muslim autonomy present themselves in several forms — local and global, extremist and moderate, conservative and revisionist — in the light of which the recycling of conventional narratives about Islam becomes increasingly problematic. Not only are these accounts inadequate for understanding Muslim experiences, but by relying on them many Western governments pursue policies that are counter-productive and ultimately hazardous for Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Recalling the Caliphate engages critically with the interaction between Islam and the political in context of a post colonial world that continues to resist profound decolonisation. In the first part of this book, Sayyid focuses on how demands for Muslim autonomy are debated in terms such as democracy, cultural relativism, secularism, and liberalism. Each chapter analyses the displacements and evasions by which the decolonisation of the Muslim world continues to be deflected and deferred, while the latter part of the book builds on this critique and attempts to accelerate the decolonisation of the Muslim Ummah.

Book excerpt: In wide-ranging essays and interviews, contributors from the fields of Buddhist practice and scholarship, philosophy, the arts, and literature examine the work of a modern genius—the Tibetan Buddhist meditation master Chögyam Trungpa Rinpoche (1939–1987). A pioneer in introducing Buddhism to the West, Trungpa Rinpoche had a distinct knack for breaking down the cultural, historical, and ideological barriers that make any such transmission so difficult today. His skill at communicating in a living language to Western students, while remaining faithful to the traditional origins of Buddhism, was paired with an understanding of the modern world of unusual relevance. As a result, his activities in a wide range of areas—including psychology, education, theater, poetry, visual arts, translation, publishing, interreligious dialogue, the creation of a path of spiritual warriorship, and the founding of the first Buddhist university in North America—offer penetrating insights into the meaning of Buddhism for our world and our culture. This anthology is a testimony to the continuing influence of his unique qualities and work as a revitalizing force in spheres both spiritual and secular.

Book Ancestral Passions

Download or read book Ancestral Passions written by Virginia Morell and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-01-11 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography of the "First Family" of anthropology reveals how their discoveries, collaborations, and rivalries contributed to our own knowledge of the origins of humankind. In this fascinating and authoritative work, acclaimed science writer Virginia Morell brings to vivid life the famous and infamous Leakey family, pioneers in the field of paleoanthropology: Louis Leakey, the patriarch, who persisted through initial scientific failures and scandal-ridden divorce to achieve spectacular success in digs throughout East Africa; Mary, his second wife, who worked alongside Louis as they made their outstanding discoveries at Olduvai Gorge and elsewhere; and Richard, their son, who ascended to the top of the field in his parents’ wake, only to be threatened with both near-fatal illness and fierce professional rivalry. Morell transports us into the world of these compelling personalities, demonstrating how a small clan of highly talented and fiercely competitive people came to dominate an entire field of science and to contribute immeasurably to our understanding of the origins of humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2017 APA William James Book Award The concept of passion is one we regularly use to describe our interests, and yet there is no broad theory that can explain the development and consequences of passion for activities across people's lives. In The Psychology of Passion, Robert J. Vallerand presents the first such theory, providing a complete presentation of the Dualistic Model of Passion and the empirical evidence that supports it. Vallerand conceives of two types of passion: harmonious passion, which remains under the person's control, and obsessive passion, which controls the person. While the first typically leads to adaptive behaviors, the obsessive form of passion leads to less adaptive and, at times, maladaptive behaviors. Vallerand highlights the effects of these two types of passion on a number of psychological phenomena, such as cognition, emotions, performance, relationships, aggression, and violence. He also discusses the development of passion and reviews a range of literature on passion for activities.
