Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new examination of how and why American religious parents seek to pass on religion to their children The most important influence shaping the religious and spiritual lives of children, youth, and teenagers is their parents. A myriad of studies show that the parents of American youth play the leading role in shaping the character of their religious and spiritual lives, even well after they leave home and often for the rest of their lives. We know a lot about the importance of parents in faith transmission. However we know much less about the actual beliefs, feelings, and activities of the parents themselves, what Christian Smith and Amy Adamczyk call the "intergenerational transmission of religious faith and practice." To address that gap, this book reports the findings of a new national study of religious parents in the United States. The findings and conclusions in Handing Down the Faith are based on 215 in-depth, personal interviews with religious parents from many traditions and different parts of the country, and sophisticated analyses of two nationally representative surveys of American parents about their religious parenting. Handing Down the Faith explores the background beliefs informing how and why religious parents seek to pass on religion to their children; examines how parenting styles interact with parent religiousness to shape effective religious transmission; shows how parents have been influenced by their experiences as children influenced by their own parents; reveals how religious parents view their congregations and what they most seek out in a local church, synagogue, temple, or mosque; explores the experiences and outlooks of immigrant parents including Latino Catholics, East Asian Buddhists, South Asian Muslims, and Indian Hindus. Smith and Adamczyk step back to consider how American religion has transformed over the last 100 years and to explain why parents today shoulder such a huge responsibility in transmitting religious faith and practice to their children. The book is rich in empirical evidence and unique in many of the topics it explores and explains, providing a variety of sometimes counterintuitive findings that will interest scholars of religion, social scientists interested in the family, parenting, and socialization; clergy and religious educators and leaders; and religious parents themselves.

Book excerpt: When God's people pray, they want answers. Yet many Christians don't know how to pray both effectively - in a way that gets results - and humbly - in a way that aligns with God's will. Prayer is a powerful weapon against the true adversaries of God's people: principalities, powers, dark rulers and spiritual wickedness in high places. These forces are the perpetrators of all kinds of evil: Addiction, abuse, poverty and spiritual bondage run rampant through families, churches, cities and nations. What can believers do to battle these forces? They can pray. Not just any prayer: the prayer of petition, known throughout Christian history as the prayer that gets results. Prayer of Petition explores this powerful prayer in detail, from the many examples found in God's Word to more recent instances of incredible miracles ushered in by this prayer. Readers will learn the biblical definitions of petition and supplication, and examine the key components of preparation, thanksgiving and humility. As readers learn to petition the Ruler of All, their confidence that God will prevail - no matter what - will grow, and as they learn to rest in His promises, peace will reign over their hearts through the coming revival.

Book An Enduring Legacy of Faith

Download or read book An Enduring Legacy of Faith written by DeLinda N. Baker and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2020-06-11 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever considered what your legacy will be? While I certainly hope that my children know they are loved, leaving a legacy is more than an assurance of affection, genetics and common traits. If you are a Christian, your legacy includes passing on a knowledge of the true God, planting the seed of faith in the hearts of future generations, showing the way to eternal life and teaching our children how to live holy righteous lives. It is a legacy of faith and an inheritance of the promises of God, extending beyond the limitations of our mortality and enduring forever. An Enduring Legacy of Faith looks at practical ways to teach what it means to have faith and to live in a way that honors God. Passing on our faith can be daunting when we consider our own shortfalls, but using examples throughout scripture, we see how God works through imperfect people and circumstances if we believe and trust God. What an awesome inheritance we will leave our children and future generations when we plant a seed of faith in our home, family, and community.

Book excerpt: How have the lives of people in your past, inspired lives of faith in your family today? Are there stories you share with family and friends, that demonstrate the loving care of God? This book is a collection of memories that my children requested to have put in writing so that they will not forget. I hope you, too, will be prompted to preserve your family's stories, for the benefit of your own children and grandchildren. Included in this book are principles for living lives of faith, and some parenting suggestions that come from multiple sources. These were also requested by my adult kids. Several are now parents themselves. They find themselves using phrases they remember from our home. Now they want some explanation of their origins and application. I have tried to honor the memory and examples of those who lived before us. This book is also meant to challenge this generation to intentionally invest in the spiritual lives of their children, in order to raise the next generation who will know and live for God. These spiritual investments will become the legacy of faith God asks us to leave. Psalm 145:4 says, "One generation will praise Your works to another, and will declare Your mighty acts." May our faith stories collectively bring much glory to God. Ruth Christenson is a pastor's wife and mother of seven children. She grew up in Brooklyn, New York, where she lived until she graduated college. Ruth spent 27 years as a homeschool mom. She has frequently been asked to share principles of discipleship and parenting to help other parents lead their children to know and love God. Ruth manages a Book and Gift Store at a Christian Conference Center. When free to travel, she loves to spend time with her kids and grandchildren.

Book The Spiritual Dimension of Childhood

Download or read book The Spiritual Dimension of Childhood written by Richard Woolley and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes an in-depth look at spirituality and its continual expression in children, to support those working with children in developing their own perceptions and interaction with them. The authors outline exactly what is understood by contemporary spirituality, and discuss the importance of context in a consideration of spirituality. They explore key issues in understanding children's spirituality under three broad headings: children's voices - how they are often lost in the context of spirituality and what the implications of that loss are; children's worlds - how children draw on the spiritual as a means of addressing notions of meaning and value in life; and children's lives - how context shapes the spiritual dimension. Drawing on interdisciplinary perspectives, this accessible book will enrich the working practices of educators and other professionals who work with children, and will also be of interest to parents and anyone interested in children's spirituality.

Book excerpt: It’s never too late to be a better father Jim Daly, president and CEO of Focus on the Family, is an expert in fatherhood—in part because his own "fathers" failed him so badly. His biological dad was an alcoholic. His stepfather deserted him. His foster father accused Jim of trying to kill him. All were out of Jim's life by the time he turned 13. Isn’t it odd—and reminiscent of the hand of God—that the director of the leading organization on family turned out to be a guy whose own background as a kid and son were pretty messed up? Or could it be that successful parenting is discovered not in the perfect, peaceful household but in the midst of battles and messy situations, where God must constantly be called to the scene? That is the mystery unraveled in this book. Using his own expertise, humor, and inexhaustible wealth of stories, Jim will show you that God can make you a good dad, a great dad, in spite of the way you’ve grown up and in spite of the mistakes you’ve made. Maybe even because of them. It’s not about becoming a perfect father. It’s about trying to become a better father, each and every day. It's about building relationships with your children through love, grace, patience, and fun—and helping them grow into the men and women they’re meant to be.

Book Bridging the Racial Divide with the Cross of Christ

Download or read book Bridging the Racial Divide with the Cross of Christ written by Maceo Gray and published by . This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bridging the Racial Divide with the Cross of Christ" brings to life both biblical and historical truths of the racial divide, beginning with the origin of sin and broken relationships to where we are today as a nation. The book shines a light on the racial divide from Slavery, through Segregation, to the present era that the author, Chaplain Maceo Gray, Th.M has defined as Subordination. The book biblically shows that racial prejudice is a sin and the sin is pride. Therefore, the solution is repentance with transformed hearts. The book also debunks biblical racial myths with Scriptures and highlights biblical Truths. Chaplain Gray tells of his own families' ancestral experiences as slaves through Segregation and his personal challenges of growing up in the south during the Modern Civil Rights movements. He covers the challenges and blessings of being the first African American engineer hired in the Engineering Division of the Bendix Corporation in 1963. He also shares how the Lord led him and his family to become the first African American members of an all-white Southern Baptist church, where he has been a member since 1978 after moving to the practically all-white Kansas City suburbs. The church ordained him as a deacon and licensed and ordained him to the gospel ministry. In tracking the historical perspective of the racial divide, Chaplain Gray has researched and loaded the book with over 140 full-color copies of pictures and official documents to illustrate and authenticate the insightful historical Timeline. The book includes information from officials Chaplain Gray interviewed at the Supreme Court Brown vs. the Board of Education National Historic site in Topeka, KS, and the John Brown State Monument site in Osawatomie, KS. The 8 by 10 inches full-color book includes 330 pages. It is ideal for personal study and application, family devotions, Sunday School, Cell Groups, Bible colleges, and seminaries. The racial divide Timeline shows progress has been made and provides hope through Jesus Christ for complete Racial Reconciliation as Chaplain Gray shows how Racial Reconciliation Ambassadors can be used to glorify God and benefit humanity.
