Book excerpt: Originally published in 1899, this collection of Mrs Philip Lybbe Powys' diary entries by a descendant is both expensive and hard to find in its first edition. The extracts from Powys' diaries and travelling journals present a fascinating insight into life, manners and customs of the upper classes in the last half of the eighteenth century. Contained within its 407 pages is a wealth of interesting anecdotes involving royalty, and other notable people, descriptions of country seats, places, towns, manufactures, amusements, and general habits of the period. Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.
