Durante largo tiempo surte el mercado interno y tiene un excedente exportable. En los últimos decenios se expande y diversifica con mayor rapidez, pero desde hace un lustro, cuando México empieza a abrir sus fronteras, la situación cambia. La tradicional industria algodonera vive una profunda y persistente crisis, y aun la de fibras sintéticas se enfrenta a una severa competencia, incluso en el propio mercado mexicano. En verdad, las puertas del país se abren prematuramente y unilateralmente, mientras Estados Unidos y otros países mantienen su política proteccionista de siempre. Ese proceso culminará en la casi segura firma del Tratado de Libre Comercio entre EU, Canadá y México. La prueba no será fácil para centenares de empresas pequeñas y medianas, la perspectiva es angosta y difícil. Aun para las más grandes y eficientes, el TLC entraña un reto insoslayable. Pero algunas empresas tienen posibilidades de salir fortalecidas y consolidarse a niveles superiores a los actuales. De todo esto se ocupa el libro de Irma Portos, que trabaja sobre el tema desde hace años y ha logrado una obra interesante, útil y de obvia actualidad.
