Book Parts of a Whole

Download or read book Parts of a Whole written by Lucas Champollion and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses mathematical models of language to explain why there are certain gaps in language: things that we might expect to be able to say but can't. For instance, why can we say I ran for five minutes but not *I ran all the way to the store for five minutes? Why is five pounds of books acceptable, but *five pounds of book not acceptable? What prevents us from saying *sixty degrees of water to express the temperature of the water in a swimming pool when sixty inches of water can express its depth? And why can we not say *all the ants in my kitchen are numerous? The constraints on these constructions involve concepts that are generally studied separately: aspect, plural and mass reference, measurement, and distributivity. In this book, Lucas Champollion provides a unified perspective on these domains, connects them formally within the framework of algebraic semantics and mereology, and uses this connection to transfer insights across unrelated bodies of literature and formulate a single constraint that explains each of the judgments above.

Book excerpt: When Mattie and David Brown set out to farm some hilly wooded acres at the foot of Pine Mountain, they are unmindful of the rumors of haunts and hermits. David's fiddle, Mattie's determination, their three healthy sons make the growing debts unimportant -- until one day David is gone. The neighboring Miller family becomes Mattie's center, but it is the hermit Brustein who changes her life. And a reluctant outsider, Sarah Bakeley, who inherits an empty cabin, will have profound influence on Mattie's granddaughter. This is a story of connections, known and unknown, sought and unsought, that shape a person's life and loves and choices.

Book excerpt: Follow the life of a young man through the loss of his father, his formative years guided by a Godly mentor, and on through the many relationships which developed as he began a ministry to the indigenous people of Southwest Alaska. Cliff and those about him encounter life at its best and worst as they live life surrounded by the world, its trials and, yes, its blessings. During the course of Parts of the Whole, there is no attempt made to sanitize events and people, serving them up like plastic-wrapped offerings in a store's refrigeration case; rather, they are taken as found""good or bad. But through the entire work, each person is given the opportunity to fail or excel""a personal choice for each. To fail with all the negative ramifications of such choices or to excel living out Christ-directed paths and each fulfilling their place as Parts of the Whole.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This explorative study gives a descriptive overview of what organizations do and experience when they say they practice design thinking. It looks at how the concept has been appropriated in organizations and also describes patterns of design thinking adoption. The authors use a mixed-method research design fed by two sources: questionnaire data and semi-structured personal expert interviews. The study proceeds in six parts: (1) design thinking¹s entry points into organizations; (2) understandings of the descriptor; (3) its fields of application and organizational localization; (4) its perceived impact; (5) reasons for its discontinuation or failure; and (6) attempts to measure its success. In conclusion the report challenges managers to be more conscious of their current design thinking practice. The authors suggest a co-evolution of the concept¹s introduction with innovation capability building and the respective changes in leadership approaches. It is argued that this might help in unfolding design thinking¹s hidden potentials as well as preventing unintended side-effects such as discontented teams or the dwindling authority of managers.

Book Body Parts and Bodies Whole

Download or read book Body Parts and Bodies Whole written by Katharina Rebay-Salisbury and published by Oxbow Books Limited. This book was released on 2010 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume grew out of an interdisciplinary discussion held in the context of the Leverhulme-funded project 'Changing Beliefs in the Human Body', through which the image of the body in pieces soon emerged as a potent site of attitudes about the body and associated practices in many periods. Archaeologists routinely encounter parts of human and animal bodies in their excavations. Such fragmentary evidence has often been created through accidental damage and the passage of time - nevertheless, it can also signify a deliberate and meaningful act of fragmentation. As a fragment, a part may acquire a distinct meaning through its enchained relationship to the whole or alternatively it may be used in a more straightforward manner to represent the whole or even act as stand-in for other variables. This collection of papers puts bodily fragmentation into a long-term historical perspective. The temporal spread of the papers collected here indicates both the consistent importance and the varied perception of body parts in the archaeological record of Europe and the Near East. By bringing case studies together from a range of locations and time periods, each chapter brings a different insight to the role of body parts and body wholes and explores the status of the body in different cultural contexts. Many of the papers deal directly with the physical remains of the dead body, but the range of practices and representations covered in this volume confirm the sheer variability of treatments of the body throughout human history. Every one of the contributions shows how looking at how the human body is divided into pieces or parts can give us deeper insights into the beliefs of the particular society which produced these practices and representations.

Download or read book JavaScript The Good Parts written by Douglas Crockford and published by "O'Reilly Media, Inc.". This book was released on 2008-05-08 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most programming languages contain good and bad parts, but JavaScript has more than its share of the bad, having been developed and released in a hurry before it could be refined. This authoritative book scrapes away these bad features to reveal a subset of JavaScript that's more reliable, readable, and maintainable than the language as a whole—a subset you can use to create truly extensible and efficient code. Considered the JavaScript expert by many people in the development community, author Douglas Crockford identifies the abundance of good ideas that make JavaScript an outstanding object-oriented programming language-ideas such as functions, loose typing, dynamic objects, and an expressive object literal notation. Unfortunately, these good ideas are mixed in with bad and downright awful ideas, like a programming model based on global variables. When Java applets failed, JavaScript became the language of the Web by default, making its popularity almost completely independent of its qualities as a programming language. In JavaScript: The Good Parts, Crockford finally digs through the steaming pile of good intentions and blunders to give you a detailed look at all the genuinely elegant parts of JavaScript, including: Syntax Objects Functions Inheritance Arrays Regular expressions Methods Style Beautiful features The real beauty? As you move ahead with the subset of JavaScript that this book presents, you'll also sidestep the need to unlearn all the bad parts. Of course, if you want to find out more about the bad parts and how to use them badly, simply consult any other JavaScript book. With JavaScript: The Good Parts, you'll discover a beautiful, elegant, lightweight and highly expressive language that lets you create effective code, whether you're managing object libraries or just trying to get Ajax to run fast. If you develop sites or applications for the Web, this book is an absolute must.

Book Is the Whole Greater than the Sum of its Parts Strengthening Caribbean Regional Integration

Download or read book Is the Whole Greater than the Sum of its Parts Strengthening Caribbean Regional Integration written by Abdullah Al-Hassan and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2020-01-17 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deeper economic integration within the Caribbean has been a regional policy priority since the establishment of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the decision to create the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME). Implementation of integration initiatives has, however, been slow, despite the stated commitment of political leaders. The “implementation deficit” has led to skepticism about completing the CSME and controversy regarding its benefits. This paper analyzes how Caribbean integration has evolved, discusses the obstacles to progress, and explores the potential benefits from greater integration. It argues that further economic integration through liberalization of trade and labor mobility can generate significant macroeconomic benefits, but slow progress in completing the institutional arrangements has hindered implementation of the essential components of the CSME and progress in economic integration. Advancing institutional integration through harmonization and rationalization of key institutions and processes can reduce the fixed costs of institutions, providing the needed scale and boost to regional integration. Greater cooperation in several functional policy areas where the region is facing common challenges can also provide low-hanging fruit, creating momentum toward full integration as the Community continues to address the obstacles to full economic integration.
