Book Strategic Corporate Conservation Planning

Download or read book Strategic Corporate Conservation Planning written by Margaret O'Gorman and published by . This book was released on 2020-02-06 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Industries that drive economic growth and support our comfortable modern lifestyles have exploited natural resources to do so. But now there's growing understanding that business can benefit from a better relationship with the environment. Leading corporations have begun to leverage nature-based remediation, restoration, and enhanced lands management to meet a variety of business needs, such as increasing employee engagement and establishing key performance indicators for reporting and disclosures. Strategic Corporate Conservation Planning offers fresh insights for corporations and environmental groups looking to create mutually beneficial partnerships that use conservation action to address business challenges and realize meaningful environmental outcomes. Recognizing the long history of mistrust between corporate action and environmental effort, Strategic Corporate Conservation Planning begins by explaining how to identify priorities that will yield a beneficial relationship between a company and nonprofit. Next, O'Gorman offers steps for creating ecologically-focused projects that address key business needs. Chapters highlight existing projects with different scales of engagement, emphasizing that headline-generating, multimillion dollar commitments are not necessarily the most effective approach. Myriad case studies featuring programs from habitat restoration to environmental educational initiatives at companies like Bridgestone USA, General Motors, and CRH Americas are included to help spark new ideas. With limited government funding available for conservation and increasing competition for grant support, corporate efforts can fill a growing need for environmental stewardship while also providing business benefits. Strategic Corporate Conservation Planning presents a comprehensive approach for effective engagement between the public and private sector, encouraging pragmatic partnerships that benefit us all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With a deep belief in partnerships for conservation, Richard C. Bartlett, Chairman of The Nature Conservancy of Texas, explores the past and ongoing efforts of individuals and groups—private, public, federal, and state—to save the best of Texas' natural landscapes and the myriad species of plants and animals they support. Drawing on some 100,000 miles of backroads travel, Bartlett vividly describes many of the areas that, through a commitment to partnerships, have already been preserved in their natural state. Fine color photographs by Leroy Williamson provide a striking visual counterpoint to the text. These words and images give well-deserved credit to the people responsible for saving some of the best of Texas. They also highlight the need to continue to join together to preserve our natural environment so that the beauty and diversity we enjoy today will be available for future generations. It is the author's hope that Saving the Best of Texas will be a catalyst in that process.

Book The Role of Public Private Partnerships and the Third Sector in Conserving Heritage Buildings Sites and Historic Urban Areas

Download or read book The Role of Public Private Partnerships and the Third Sector in Conserving Heritage Buildings Sites and Historic Urban Areas written by Susan Macdonald and published by . This book was released on 2014-06-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The conservation of cultural heritage requires the involvement of multiple actors from across the public, private, and nongovernmental, or third, sectors, not only to initiate and carry out conservation but also to sustain heritage places. The conservation of the historic urban environment poses specific and urgent challenges that require a multidisciplinary approach in which conservation actions are embedded within economic, social, and environmental development strategies. Increasingly, the private and third sectors are playing a pivotal role in these processes. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) are contractual arrangements in which the private and/or third sector assists in delivering a public facility or service by providing funding or operating leadership. The third sector, which may include heritage-related NGOs, as well as people living near a heritage site, is of particular relevance to PPPs used for heritage conservation. This publication focuses specifically on the use of PPPs for historic buildings and historic urban areas, and is targeted to those working in the cultural heritage sector. It draws on existing literature, which it aims to make more accessible to those interested in cultural heritage conservation. While providing information on the basic concepts of public-private partnerships and the roles and responsibilities of the partners in a PPP, this is not a guide to the use of PPPs. It discusses the types of PPPs that have been used to conserve historic buildings and historic urban areas, provides specific examples of where and how they have been used, and demonstrates ways in which PPP mechanisms have met conservation goals. This publication also makes some limited observations on the aims of PPPs drawn from the literature, from published case studies, and from a few further case study investigations. This publication draws on English-language works produced between 1992 and 2012, but concentrates on the more recent literature. Much of this material is from the Australia, the United Kingdom, and other European nations that have been the most active in conducting PPPs for heritage resources and in publishing information about these projects. This overview includes an extensive bibliography and provides some suggestions of topics for further research.

Book The Conservation Program Handbook

Download or read book The Conservation Program Handbook written by Sandra Tassel and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-09-26 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1996 and 2007, voters approved almost $24 billion for local government park, open space, and other conservation purposes. Despite this substantial sum for land protection, there was at that time no book available to guide officials as they implemented voters’ mandates. The Conservation Program Handbook was written in response to numerous requests to The Trust for Public Land for exactly this type of guidance from community leaders who wanted to know how to effectively conserve their iconic landscapes. In addition, in November 2008, despite massive doses of terrible financial news, voters across the U.S. approved land conservation funding measures. It was a record-breaking year for land protection financing, with voters demonstrating substantial support for open space ballot measures despite the economic and fiscal crisis of the time. The Conservation Program Handbook is a manual that provides all of the information—on a broad spectrum of topics—that conservation professionals are likely to encounter. It compiles and distills advice from professionals based on successful conservation efforts across the country, including a list of “best practices” for the most critical issues conservationists can expect to face. By providing information on how to do conservation work in the best possible manner, The Conservation Program Handbook has the goal of increasing the amount, quality, and pace of conservation being achieved by local governments throughout the nation.

Book Tropical Forest Conservation and Industry Partnership

Download or read book Tropical Forest Conservation and Industry Partnership written by Connie J. Clark and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-03-16 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historically, the conservation of forests and wildlife has focused on the creation of national parks and reserves. However, only 9% of protected areas are larger than 14,000 hectares, likely making them too small to conserve ecosystem services and prevent loss of wide-ranging keystone species such as elephant and leopard. New approaches are needed that extend conservation beyond protected area boundaries into areas where economic considerations prevail. The book describes one such emerging model of conservation: the integration of the private sector into partnerships to protect biodiversity and improve forest management. While such partnerships are being created in nearly every sector of resource extraction, detailed analyses of how such partnerships work and whether they benefit biodiversity conservation are rare. Using a case study from the Congo Basin, the book examines principles of conservation and partnership, and provides technical and methodological details to replicate an innovative conservation model. It presents concrete solutions for expanding conservation across multi-use landscapes, a necessary action as industry expands to all the corners of the globe.

Book The PARTNERS Principles for Community Based Conservation

Download or read book The PARTNERS Principles for Community Based Conservation written by Charudutt Mishra and published by . This book was released on 2016-10-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our planet is witnessing the sixth mass extinction of species. We are trying to tackle this crisis almost on a war footing, with all the trappings and machinery of combat - fences, guns, protected areas, and a suite of top-down laws and policies. But we haven't been able to stop the bleeding. This book argues that we will not stanch the flow unless we are willing to change our fundamental attitude towards people - people who live in our last remaining natural areas, whose lives depend on these ecosystems, and who are most affected - negatively - by policies and actions designed to protect biodiversity. To conserve our natural ecosystems and species, we must gain the support of local people. Yet, this is more easily said than done. How does one engage with local communities and garner their support for conservation? Unlike protected areas, whose governance and management have been formalised worldwide, there are no clear-cut frameworks for community-based conservation, no universally accepted guidelines. This book is an attempt to fill that void. It should interest all who care about preserving the earth's wild species and ecosystems. This book is founded on two decades of experience working with local communities to conserve the high mountain habitats of the endangered snow leopard in various parts of Asia - the Himalayas, Altai, Tien Shan, Hindu Kush, Pamirs, and the Tibetan Plateau. Drawing from this wealth of experience, Dr. Charu Mishra and his colleagues at the Snow Leopard Trust distil eight principles of community-based conservation, discussing them with candor and pragmatism. These 'PARTNERS Principles' are a blend of the practical and the ethical.
