Book Particulate Deposition from Turbulent Parallel Streams

Book excerpt: A theory is developed for particulate deposition rate on surfaces from turbulent gas streams. The three characteristic times, the particle equilibration time, the turbulent fluctuation time, and the particle residence time, control the deposition mode. The larger particles reach the wall across the laminar sublayer because of the momentum imparted to them by the turbulence velocity of the fluid. The smaller particles, on the other hand, diffuse to the wall by thermophoresis which depends on the temperature gradient. The computed results of the theory for pipe flow are compared with the available experimental data and satisfactory agreement is shown.

Book excerpt: The book presents an up-to-date review of turbulent two-phase flows with the dispersed phase, with an emphasis on the dynamics in the near-wall region. New insights to the flow physics are provided by direct numerical simuation and by fine experimental techniques. Also included are models of particle dynamics in wall-bounded turbulent flows, and a description of particle surface interactions including muti-layer deposition and re-suspension.

Book Fission Product Processes In Reactor Accidents

Download or read book Fission Product Processes In Reactor Accidents written by J. T. Rogers and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 883 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Three Mile Island and Chernobyl nuclear incidents emphasized the need for the world-wide nuclear community to cooperate further and exchange the results of research in this field in the most open and effective manner. Recognizing the roles of heat and mass transfer in all aspects of fission-product behavior in sever reactor accidents, the Executive Committee of the International Centre for Heat and Mass Transfer organized a Seminar on Fission Product Transport Processes in Reactor Accidents. This book contains the eleven of the lectures and all the papers presented at the seminar along with four invited papers that were not presented and a summary of the closing session.

Book Impact of Mineral Impurities in Solid Fuel Combustion

Download or read book Impact of Mineral Impurities in Solid Fuel Combustion written by R. Gupta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 750 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains papers presented at the Engineering Foundation Conference on mineral matter in fuels held on November 2-7, 1997 in Kona, Hawaii. The conference is one of a continuing series that was initiated by the CEGB Mar- wood Engineering Laboratories in 1963. The conference was to be eventually organised by the Engineering Foundation as the need for multi-disciplinary work related to c- trolling ash effects in combustors became apparent. The conference covers both the science and the applications. The papers also present case histories, particularly for current fuel technologies, developments in advanced technologies for power generation and mathematical modelling of these processes. Developments since 1963 have been slow, but steady, due to the complexity of the chemical and physical processes involved. However, the research presented here displays great improvement in our understanding of the mechanisms by which mineral matter will influence fuel use. Steve Benson from EERC presented a review and current status of issues related to ash deposition in coal combustion and gasification. The application of new analytical tools, which have been detailed in the previous conferences, is presented. These include CCSEM, as well as new techniques for char- terising sintering of ash, such as TMA, image analysis, X-ray diffraction crystallography and thermal analysis. The new analytical techniques were extended to encompass widely differing fuels such as biomass. Ole H Larsen from ELSAM Denmark presented a review of these advanced techniques.

Book Fouling of Heat Exchangers

Download or read book Fouling of Heat Exchangers written by T.R. Bott and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-04-13 with total page 547 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique and comprehensive text considers all aspects of heat exchanger fouling from the basic science of how surfaces become fouled to very practical ways of mitigating the problem and from mathematical modelling of different fouling mechanisms to practical methods of heat exchanger cleaning. The problems that restrict the efficient operation of equipment are described and the costs, some of them hidden costs, that are associated with the fouling of heat exchangers are discussed. Some simple concepts and models of the fouling processes are presented as part of the introduction to the subject. Advice on the selection, design, installation and commissioning of heat exchangers to minimise fouling is given. A large part of the text is devoted to the use of chemical and other additives to reduce or eliminate the problem of fouling. Another large section is designed to give information on both on-line and off-line cleaning of heat exchangers. One of the difficulties faced by designers and operators of heat exchangers is anticipating the likely extent of fouling problems to be encountered with different flow streams. Another large section addresses the question and describes methods that have been used in attempting to define fouling potential. The book concludes with a chapter on how fouling information can be obtained using plant data, field tests and laboratory studies.
