Book Particle Verbs and Local Domains

Download or read book Particle Verbs and Local Domains written by Jochen Zeller and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new account of particle verbs in German and Dutch by looking at the conditions under which a non-morphological structure may exhibit “word-like” properties. It shows that although particles are represented as phrasal complements of their verbs, they lack the functional structure which is usually associated with phrases. The author uses the concept of a “local domain”, which can be established by terminal nodes both in syntax and in morphology, to demonstrate why the impoverished syntactic structure of particle verbs shares important features of complex words derived in morphology. The analysis is substantiated through a detailed study of the syntactic, semantic, and morphological properties of particle verbs. Special attention is given to the relevance of local domains for the association of lexical information about sound and meaning with terminal nodes in morphological and syntactic structures.

Book Particle Verbs in English

Download or read book Particle Verbs in English written by Han Luo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains why cognitive linguistics offers a plausible theoretical framework for a systematic and unified analysis of the syntax and semantics of particle verbs. It explores the meaning of the verb + particle syntax, the particle placement of transitive particle verbs, how particle placement is related to idiomaticity, and the relationship between idiomaticity and semantic extension. It also offers valuable linguistic implications for future studies on complex linguistic constructions using a cognitive linguistic approach, as well as insightful practical implications for the learning and teaching of English particle verbs.

Book Verb Particle Explorations

Download or read book Verb Particle Explorations written by Nicole Dehé and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-02-13 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions in this book are a representative cross-section of recent research on verb-particle constructions. The syntactic, semantic, morphological, and psycholinguistic phenomena associated with the constructions in English, Dutch, German, and Swedish are analyzed from the various different theoretical viewpoints.

Book Non Projecting Words

Download or read book Non Projecting Words written by I. Toivonen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing primarily on Swedish, a Germanic language whose particles have not previously been studied extensively, this study develops a theory of non-projecting words in which particles are morphologically independent words that do not project phrases. It identifies the violations of the basic tenets of X-bar theory and develops a formally explicit revision of X-bar theory that can accommodate the requisite "weak" projections.

Book Morphosyntactic Change

Download or read book Morphosyntactic Change written by Bettelou Los and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-03 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle verbs (combinations of two words but lexical units) are a notorious problem in linguistics. Is a particle verb like look up one word or two? It has its own entry in dictionaries, as if it is one word, but look and up can be split up in a sentence: we can say He looked the information up and He looked up the information. But why can't we say He looked up it? In English look and up can only be separated by a direct object, but in Dutch the two parts can be separated over a much longer distance. How did such hybrid verbs arise and how do they function? How can we make sense of them in modern theories of language structure? This book sets out to answer these and other questions, explaining how these verbs fit into the grammatical systems of English and Dutch.

Book Yearbook of Morphology 2003

Download or read book Yearbook of Morphology 2003 written by G.E. Booij and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-11-23 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Yearbook of Morphology series, published since 1988, has proven to be an eminent support for the current upswing of morphological research and has set a standard for morphological research. The 2003 volume deals with the phenomenon of complex predicates consisting of a verb preceded by a preverb, presents historical evidence on the change of preverbal elements into prefixes, and discusses morphological parsing, and the role of paradigmatical relations in analogical change. It is relevant to theoretical, descriptive, and historical linguists, morphologists, phonologists, computational linguists, and psycholinguists.

Book Structural Aspects of Semantically Complex Verbs

Download or read book Structural Aspects of Semantically Complex Verbs written by Nicole Dehé and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a point of debate to what extent and according to which principles the syntactic behavior of verbs can be derived from their semantic representations and how it can be affected by lexical or syntactic operations. This collection of articles brings together insights from the research on verbs whose semantic structure has been made more complex by the incorporation of a particle, a prefix, a verbal or a nominal element. A list of the constructions and languages that are discussed includes particle and prefix verbs in English and German, resultative constructions in English, Danish and Spanish, psych verbs in English and German, and compound verbs in Greek, Chinese, and Persian.
