Book The Stage Constants of Cascade Impactors

Download or read book The Stage Constants of Cascade Impactors written by Thomas T. Mercer and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The particle size distributions which would be found on each stage of a cascade impactor when used to sample an aerosol having a lognormal mass distribution have been calculated. Three impactors, differing with respect to the collection characteristics of the various stages, were assumed. Samples were obtained from hypothetical aerosols having a wide range of distribution parameters. It is shown that for a particular aerosol the particle sizes appear to be log normally distributed on all stages and that the mass median diameter for a given stage, calculated from the number distribution on that stage, is a good estimate of the true mass median diameter for that stage. The true mass median diameters and true effective cut-off diameters for each stage and for each aerosol have been calculated also. The latter are shown to be superior for interpreting impactor data.

Book Evaluation of a High volume Cascade Particle Impactor System

Download or read book Evaluation of a High volume Cascade Particle Impactor System written by and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From American Chemical Society 2nd joint conference on sensing of environmental pollutants; Washington, District of Columbia, USA (10 Dec 1973). Commercially available 20 cfm cascade impactors were evaluated under field sampling conditions for particle sampling bias caused by interstage losses and by non-wind direction sampler oriertation. An integrated sampler using an impactor and a winddirection self-orienting cowl attachment decreased particle sampling bias. (auth).

Book Fine Particles

Download or read book Fine Particles written by Benjamin Y.H. Liu and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 852 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fine Particles: Aerosol Generation, Measurement, Sampling, and Analysis is a collection of technical papers presented at the Symposium on Fine Particles held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 28-30, 1975. The symposium aims to explore the developments in instrumentation and experimental techniques for aerosol studies. This book is organized into four parts encompassing 34 chapters that focus on fine particles below about 3.5 μm in diameter. Part I presents the research and development in Europe and Japan on fine particles and aerosols, as well as the aerosol standards development work at the Particle Technology Laboratory, University of Minnesota. This part also includes calibration studies on condensation nuclei counters and the diffusion battery. Significant chapters in Part II are devoted to the common techniques for generation of aerosols of various sizes, from fine particles to monodisperse aerosols. This part further looks into the equipment limitations and problems in producing fine particle aerosols for life testing air cleaning systems and for weather modification experimentation. Part III describes the techniques and equipment used for size-selective aerosol sampling in terms of the design principles applied, the correspondence between design and performance of specific samplers, their applicability to field conditions, and their ability to satisfy sampler acceptance criteria. Part IV deals first with the methods for determination of aerosol properties, including their optical, electrical, and spectral properties. Other chapters examine the principles, mode of operation, and application of processes and instruments for aerosol studies.

Book Good Cascade Impactor Practices AIM and EDA for Orally Inhaled Products

Download or read book Good Cascade Impactor Practices AIM and EDA for Orally Inhaled Products written by Terrence P. Tougas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-10 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this publication is to introduce a new, simpler and more effective way in which to interpret pharmaceutical aerosol particle size data from orally inhaled products (OIPs). Currently, the compendial and regulatory requirements dictate the need for measurements by full resolution multi-stage cascade impactor (CI), a process that is demanding for the operator, time consuming, prone to experimental error, and challenging for method transfers from one laboratory to another. Furthermore, we shall show that the current practice of reducing information from mass-weighted aerodynamic particle size distribution (APSD) measurements through the use of CI stage groupings is not the most effective decision-making tool for OIP quality control (QC) in comparison with newly introduced, mutually-independent efficient data analysis (EDA) metrics that can be derived either from full resolution or abbreviated impactor measurements (AIM).

Book Analysis of Cascade Impactor and EPA Method 29 Data from the Americium

Download or read book Analysis of Cascade Impactor and EPA Method 29 Data from the Americium written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The offgas system of the Am/Cm pilot melter at TNX was characterized by measuring the particulate evolution using a cascade impactor and EPA Method 29. This sampling work was performed by John Harden of the Clemson Environmental Technologies Laboratory, under SCUREF Task SC0056. Elemental analyses were performed by the SRTC Mobile Laboratory. Operation of the Am/Cm melter with B2000 frit has resulted in deposition of PbO and boron compounds in the offgas system that has contributed to pluggage of the High Efficiency Mist Eliminator (HEME). Sampling of the offgas system was performed to quantify the amount of particulate in the offgas system under several sets of conditions. Particulate concentration and particle size distribution were measured just downstream of the melter pressure control air addition port and at the HEME inlet. At both locations, the particulate was measured with and without steam to the film cooler while the melter was idled at about 1450 degrees Celsius. Additional determinations were made at the melter location during feeding and during idling at 1150 degrees Celsius rather than 1450 degrees Celsius (both with no steam to the film cooler). Deposition of particulates upstream of the melter sample point may have, and most likely did occur in each run, so the particulate concentrations measured do no necessarily reflect the total particulate emission at the melt surface. However, the data may be used in a relative sense to judge the system performance.

Book Particle Size Analysis in Industrial Hygiene

Download or read book Particle Size Analysis in Industrial Hygiene written by Leslie Silverman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle Size Analysis in Industrial Hygiene discusses technical information on particle properties, kinetic behavior, sampling instruments, and interpretation. This book is composed of seven chapters and is prepared by the American Industrial Hygiene Association for the Division of Technical Information, United States Atomic Energy Commission. This monograph is a part of the continuing effort of both organizations to extend the field of technical knowledge and safeguard the health and well-being of persons exposed to toxic or deleterious material. After briefly discussing the fundamental physics and chemistry of aerosol systems, the book goes on describing the analytical methods and instruments for particle size analysis. Such methods include direct and indirect sampling methods as well as automatic counting and sizing instruments. Specific methods considered include sieve analysis, optical and electron microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. A chapter on particle size interpretation and representation with the use of applied mathematical statistics concepts is also provided. This book also covers a general discussion on typical applications of particle size analysis to industrial hygiene, radiation protection, air pollution control, industrial toxicology, and related areas. This book is an invaluable source for industrial hygienists and to those working in the many disciplines dealing with particle behavior.
