Book Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena

Download or read book Laser Interaction and Related Plasma Phenomena written by Helmut J. Schwarz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 913 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 7th International Workshop in the series LASER INTERACTION AND RELATED PLASMA PHENOMENA continued the high standards established by the earlier meetings in this series. It was organized under the directorship of Heinrich Hora and George H. Miley at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, with Fred Schwirzke as the local organizer. These workshops have presented many "firsts" in laser plasma interactions and especially in laser fusion. Some presentations provided continuity with the past, most represented advancements; however, in some workshops, progress did not appear to be occurring as rapidly as in others. Therefore, it was a special pleasure that in the present workshop when, on October 30, 1985, Chiyoe Yamanaka disclosed a breakthrough in the generation of fusion neutrons with laser fusion targets. The 7th Workshop also continued to represent other new fields of laser-plasma interaction. The progress reported was most pronounced in the fields of X-ray lasers, laser acceleration of particles by electrostatic double layers in plasmas, and a particle beam technique to solve the geometric problem of muon-catalyzed fusion. The development of laser-plasma interactions at medium to high laser intensities may be seen in its whole complexity from a brief review of prior conferences. At the first Workshop in 1969, a comprehensive review of the field was presented by the speakers with the opening address by N.

Book Particle Interactions in High Temperature Plasmas

Download or read book Particle Interactions in High Temperature Plasmas written by Oliver James Pike and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-17 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis makes two important contributions to plasma physics. The first is the extension of the seminal theoretical works of Spitzer and Braginskii, which describe the basics of particle interactions in plasma, to relativistic systems. Relativistic plasmas have long been studied in high-energy astrophysics and are becoming increasingly attainable in the laboratory. The second is the design of a new class of photon–photon collider, which is the first capable of detecting the Breit–Wheeler process. Though it offers the simplest way for light to be converted into matter, the process has never been detected in the 80 years since its theoretical prediction. The experimental scheme proposed here exploits the radiation used in inertial confinement fusion experiments and could in principle be implemented in one of several current-generation facilities.

Book Interaction of Charged Particle Beams with Plasmas

Download or read book Interaction of Charged Particle Beams with Plasmas written by Carl Joseph Siemon and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis focuses on the propagation of charged particle beams in plasmas, and is divided into two main parts. In the second chapter, a novel theoretical model for underdense electron beam propagation during the nonlinear stage of the resistive Weibel instability (WI) is presented and is used to calculate the stopping time of the beam. The model and supporting simulation results lead to the conclusion that the WI initially enhances beam deceleration but then reduces it when compared to a filamentation-suppressed beam (without WI), so that the overall stopping time of the beam is essentially unaffected by the instability. Using the theoretical model, a criterion is derived that determines when deceleration is no longer enhanced by the instability. We also demonstrate that exotic plasma return current distributions can be obtained within and outside of beam filaments that sharply contrast those observed in collisionless systems. For example, the plasma return current is reversed in selected areas. In the next chapter, a new method for initiating the modulation instability (MI) of a proton beam in a proton driver plasma wakefield accelerator using a short laser pulse preceding the beam is presented. A diffracting laser pulse is used to produce a plasma wave that provides a seeding modulation of the proton bunch with the period equal to that of the plasma wave. Using the envelope description of the proton beam, this method of seeding the MI is analytically compared with the earlier suggested seeding technique that involves an abrupt truncation of the proton bunch. The full kinetic simulation of a realistic proton bunch is used to validate the analytic results. It is further used to demonstrate that a plasma density ramp placed in the early stages of the laser-seeded MI leads to its stabilization, resulting in sustained accelerating electric fields (of order several hundred MV/m) over long propagation distances (100-1000 m). The final chapter describes a harmonic expansion formalism that attempts to explain the post-linear stage of the MI. The formalism is developed first, and then several crippling problems with it are identified.
