Book Stakeholder Dialogues on Sustainable Development Strategies

Download or read book Stakeholder Dialogues on Sustainable Development Strategies written by D. Barry Dalal-Clayton and published by IIED. This book was released on 2002 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a set of case studies summarising recent developing country experiences of developing and implementing national sustainable development strategies (NSDSs). These are based directly on the work of country teams that facilitated multi-stakeholder dialogues on NSDSs. Drawing also from this work and from broader international experience, the early chapters explore new thinking and provide key lessons about the development, implementation and monitoring of NSDSs; and explore how the continuous improvement approach now advocated for NSDSs can link their development and implementation with the needs and opportunities for research. The book is a practical complement to the Resource Book on Sustainable Development Strategies (isn 1668215), which provides guidance on how to develop, assess and implement such strategies.

Book Gender Family and Work in Tanzania

Download or read book Gender Family and Work in Tanzania written by Colin Creighton and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-11-01 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000. The essays in this volume explore the changing nature of family and gender relations in contemporary Tanzania. Particular attention is paid to the social construction of marriage and to the interplay of family life and gender relations with economic processes and forms of work. Many of the papers are based upon recent ethnographic and survey research; others provide a much needed historical perspective upon the change in family patterns and upon the ways in which gender and family relations are shaped by, and in turn help to shape, wider social institutions and processes.

Book Contentious Politics Local Governance and the Self

Download or read book Contentious Politics Local Governance and the Self written by Tim Kelsall and published by Nordic Africa Institute. This book was released on 2004 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Governance Agenda is the framework that currently organizes the West’s relations with Africa. The present work is an attempt to see Governance through the lens of a contemporary, local history. The report analyzes three periods of contentious politics at local level in Tanzania and two multi-party elections. It provides a window on mismanagement in local government, it examines the intervention by national and local elites in district conflicts, and it points to the difficulties ordinary people face in holding their leaders to account. The argument of the report is that current approaches to the study of Governance overlook an essential ingredient for its potential success: namely, the sociological conditions in which forms of collective action conducive to improved political accountability become possible at a grassroots level. The analysis aims to show that economic diversification and multiple livelihoods have given rise to a reticular social structure in which individuals find it difficult to combine to hold their leaders to account. People have fragmented identities formed in networks of social relations, which impedes the emergence of strong collective identities appropriate to effective social movements.

Book Mountain Area Research and Management

Download or read book Mountain Area Research and Management written by Martin F. Price and published by Earthscan. This book was released on 2013 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together scientists and practitioners from five continents to present their experience in undertaking activities that contribute to our understanding and informed management of mountain areas. In particular, they address the challenges of working in interdisciplinary teams and of effectively involving stakeholders. The result is a powerful book that integrates research from different disciplines in the natural and social sciences, and in some cases indigenous knowledge, to address the question of how knowledge is gained about mountain areas and how can it be integrated and used in effective management.A comprehensive introduction covers the challenges in mountain area research and management, and the need for integrated approaches. This is followed by chapters that look at key areas of mountain research and management over the past 25 years, covering inter-and trans-disciplinary research, subsistence cultures and sustainable development, innovations in watershed management and biodiversity conservation. Subsequent chapters cover key areas of research and management on five continents with a focus on comparison of common challenges and solutions across regions. The concluding chapter brings these experiences together.Published with Parks Canada

Book Environmental Change in Lesotho

Download or read book Environmental Change in Lesotho written by Pendo Maro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-20 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Change in Lesotho identifies and analyzes the drivers of land-use change and the consequences of these changes on the livelihoods of rural land-users/managers. To accomplish this, a combination of tools from the social sciences and environmental fields were developed to identify causes and consequences of land-use change at selected levels, using a ‘nested’ approach. These methods were then applied to a case study of two villages in the Lowland region of Lesotho. This book is directed at environmental and social science experts, researchers, decision-makers, and development/aid workers interested in understanding the intricate human-environment relationship as it relates to land-use change in a changing biophysical, socio-economic, political and institutional context, coupled by HIV/AIDS, changing demographics, local perceptions and what is termed here ‘dependency syndrome’.
